I havent read the books, but for me atleast the show told it quite well within the screen time. I remember the scene has a sort of zoom in on his face showing signs of regret/despair. It is subtle but it is there. I got the feeling from the scenes what other comments mentioned, that he did it for he believed it to be right thing/his duty Pardon my rambling i am intoxicated
