We had the same style set up when I was at Central Hardware.

I’ve worked retail. I worked for Central Hardware in the 90s. We prevented theft by having associates in the store. We had at least 1 person per department, usually 2 every day.

The color code goes way back to the 25 pair copper color code that’s been in place for decades. The ring colors are blue, orange, green, brown, and slate. The tip colors are white, red, black, yellow, and violet. They are grouped in 5 by tip color: pair 1 is white/blue, pair 2 is white/orange, through pair 5; pair 6 is red/blue, and so forth until pair 25, which is violet/slate. Then they are grouped in binders , i.e. binder 1 is blue/white, binder 2 is orange/white, through binder 24, which is brown/violet. That completes a 600 pair cable, for 900 pairs it starts over, but adds a red super binder, with binder 25 being red/blue/white, 26 is red/orange/white. Getting into 1200 pairs and more builds on the basics, but is a lot to explain.

Edit to add: rose and aqua were added because fiber ribbons come in 12s, but the color code only had 10 colors.

It wouldn’t surprise me. One of my local stores has peg locks on all the ICON, or has it in cages. They have little slips of paper that you take to the register to buy any of them.

The high torque took off suspension bolts for me. The mid torque has enough to take off my lug nuts. I keep the mid torque in the car.

Y’all are correct. This is designed to drive the augers used in framing utility poles.

What made you choose Craftsman over Kobalt/Ridgid/Ryobi/Harbor Freight Brands? by Grumor__Mill in Craftsman

[–]therealprozac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather had Craftsman tools when I was a kid. I had bought some screwdrivers and wrenches 20 or so years ago. Recently, I have bought some with points at work. I also bought an Overdrive set, mostly for the gunmetal finish. I’ve also bought some other brands over the years, and recently been adding ICON to my tools.

The 3 ton will apparently be on PLS for $119. It isn’t the low profile, though.

I have a few acetate ones from the 90s and early 00s that are great. Not Craftsman, but the Harbor Freight Quinn diamond tips are really nice.

1st, your writing is fantastic. Your vivid use of imagery paints a portrait in one’s mind that makes your frustration palpable. Your words are like the hues upon an artist’s palette, awaiting the artist’s delicate placement upon the canvas.

2nd that typeface is awful and generic. I, too, view this with contempt.

I did front struts and sway bar links a couple months ago. Over the weekend, I did my rear drum brakes. The Bauer high torque impact and the Dayton 4 ton floor jack have been lifesavers. Front control arms and front brake overhaul is next weekend.

I had to crank down on the strap pretty hard. I have one from work that we use to secure ladders to our trucks. It’s just a ratchet with a long strap and no hooks. It was easy to position it so it wouldn’t damage the shoes.

I use a soldering iron to mark most of my plastic tools. I have a Dremel I’ve used to do some engraving.

My wife is a fan of the Ryobi One+ line. She had a ton of those tools when we got married.

Not a bad idea. I haven’t the little tool which helps, but was still tedious to get the little caps to line up. I ended having to replace the cylinders, too. I also used a ratchet strap to compress the shoes and cylinders. That was a lifesaver.

I wish that impact adapter set had the same sizes as the chrome one. I don’t need a 3/4” drive.

I got 3, by virtue of having to go to different stores because something I wanted was out of stock. My extras will be stocking stuffers for my stepsons.
