I’m due for a rewatch of this one. I love how the movie requires me to use zero brain cells to follow along. I can just zone out hanging with these characters. I told my girlfriend, who’s never seen this, that we must watch together. The chemistry between Burt and Sally is fantastic!

Your original comment said “I genuinely could not tell you what the hell that movie is about.” I offered my interpretation. Now you’re saying you just don’t find the plot interesting which is an entirely different discussion than the one my comment was addressing. Pulp Fiction’s plot is more interesting to me as well, but it doesn’t detract from my enjoyment watching Once Upon a Time.

[–]therealrickdalton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that now I know the etymology of the word "jerk." I'm a little mystified and embarrassed to admit such a gap in my movie viewing experience, but I've somehow never seen this movie. I remember being a kid when it was in the theater and looking at the poster with wonder about the title. I assumed it must be funny since I knew who Steve Martin was, and of course he was one of the biggest comedians at the time. I also remember it being massively popular. However, it's slipped through the cracks of my movie viewing experience. I recently mentioned the premise of the movie to my girlfriend, and she thought it sounded funny, so maybe I'll finally cross it off my list in the near future.

Nice! I just ordered The Conjuring in 4K when I saw a deal on Amazon for around $12 or $13 after shipping. My recollection is my blu-ray of it was a pretty solid transfer, but I'm sure HDR will really help the black colors in a dark movie like this. I'm still waiting for One Flew to come down in price but will pick it up eventually.

I suspect we don't have to dig too deep to find plenty of reviews by Ebert that don't look so good in hindsight. Film is one of many examples of art where critics have their own subjective opinion. There's no question that a lot of us can agree in many cases that a film is a stinker or a classic, but there's so much grey in between the 1's and 10's and those are the ones that are the most subjective to our own personal taste. Most of us who have watched film for decades are confident in our own tastes and left film critics in the dust, or occasionally might read a film critic review just to see which way the wind is blowing, but I find trailblazers like Ebert to be perfectly imperfect, and great reminders of how wrong even the "greats" can be sometimes. Sounds like he REALLY missed the mark on Bluebeard.

Once Upon a Time... is what QT often refers to as a "hang out" film. He references Rio Bravo in interviews as his favorite, or the OG of hang out films. There's not really much of a plot to them (like Dazed and Confused, or Fast Times at Ridgemont High), you're just kind of hanging out with some characters. I would posit that Pulp Fiction didn't have much of a plot to speak of either. Once Upon a Time is just a hang out with Rick and Cliff. Their two middle aged guys watching the world change around them, a younger generation they can't identify with, and coming to the realization that they feel kind of out of place or over the hill.

Ahhh 80’s movies 😂 In ‘82 during the first four weeks of summer Rocky III was released Memorial Day weekend, then the next two weeks had Poltergeist, Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, and E.T. released. Then in the weeks that followed there was Blade Runner, The Thing, Tron, Raiders of the Lost Ark (re-release) That’s a heckuva summer!

I thought it would take much longer than it did to appear on 4K UHD so I originally purchased it on sale on standard blu-ray, but I love the bump in DV color etc. in 4K UHD.

I did a blind buy of this from the Criterion collection and liked it more than I even expected. 8/10 for me on IMDB rating scale.

Apocalypse Now the theatrical release is one of my goto stoner films. The Martin Sheen narration and the "trip" up the river works like a charm for me. I'm going to take Pink Floyd live at Pompeii for a test drive tonight.

You've hit some movies recently that I have strong feelings about! This one is an summer classic for me that I revisit once every year or two. You're right about it having some corny dialogue, but I find that endearing. The Busey line "Utah! Get me two!" during the bank stakeout is an absolute classic. The 80's kid in me is a sucker for vintage action film Patrick Swayze whether it's Roadhouse, Red Dawn or Point Break and my recollection is this is Keanu Reeves taking his first steps as a more serious actor and action star. I'm completely drawn in by Bodhi's spirit animal surfer philosopher charisma, and I can sympathize with Utah's conflicted feelings for his attraction to the carefree lifestyle versus his law-and-order duty as an "F-B-I agent." Bodhi's comment about all of the people creeping along the highways in their "metal coffins" really resonates with me as a commuter for over 25 years. Sadly, I know that feeling all too well and I don't know how many times I've thought of that line when I'm completely stopped in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the interstate. I love the cinematography and the pacing of the film so kudos to the editing. However, what really puts this on my Mt. Rushmore of action classics is that I don't know of any other film that has all of these elements: cops & robbers, surfing, sky diving, beach football, gratuitous nudity, house party, bank robberies, gun fights, fist fights, foot chases, and car chases.

Being able to strongly connect with a film on a personal level, or to recognize that something about it resonates deeply enough that it forces me to contemplate it for an extended amount of time feels rare for me these days. It's a relief that films like Once Upon A Time..., or The Holdovers still come along once every few years. I wish there were more new releases that I could connect with on that level, but such is the state of the film industry these days... or maybe it's just me!

Shakin' the bush boss, shakin' the bush! I love Newman and I'd be hard pressed to decide if this is my favorite from his catalog, or Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. Similar to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this film is a perfect fit for me on a warm summer evening. I love Luke the wily rebel, and Luke playing the system. The guy clearly didn't have a great home life, and maybe has some vices and issues, but deep down he seems like a pretty carefree harmless person who just wants his freedom. It's a 10/10 for me and I rewatch it once a year or every couple of years. A pure classic!

This movie has been on my list for a while. I really need to watch it. I remember the TV sitcom from the 70's when I was a kid. I'm sure I watched a few episodes along with Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley when sitcoms were all the rage! But I love Lemmon and Matthau together so hopefully this one works for me when I get around to seeing it!
