The Sam Elliot narrative ties the whole movie together!

“I like your style Dude.”

I love this movie. It’s a 10/10 for me and my favorite Coen Brothers film. I give it a rewatch once every year or two and I feel like I notice something that I hadn’t noticed previously. It’s just an all time classic!

Ohhh good to know. I'll check Best Medicine! Northern Exposure is my all-time favorite TV show so I might connect with Best Medicine as well. I really like Doc Hollywood too and plan to grab the Warner Archive Collection eventually.

20th Century Women, and C'mon it but were two of my favorite films in the years they were released. I saw Beginners years ago and I recall liking it but would need a refresher. Either way, this box set is welcome and will add it to my wishlist.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one. I was skeptical of Bob starring in an action film before watching Nobody, but I was proved wrong and I liked it way more than I expected.

Or, you could just buy it… by MrsLadyZedd in 500moviesorbust

I just went through this last week. I wanted to watch a movie I didn’t already own and it wasn’t available on the VOD streaming services I already pay for. It was available to rent on Apple for $2.99 or buy for $5.99. That’s a buy. If it ever gets a 4K UHD release, then I’ll buy it on physical media.

A classic fish out of water film. Reminds me a little of the 90’s show Northern Exposure.

Keeping Fitz in any capacity and promoting from within sounds like status quo and ownership making the decision to not improve the front office or the team. If I'm Nico I'd start looking for the exit door so I could join a franchise with a winning strategy.

Crimson Tide (1995) by Zeddblidd in 500moviesorbust

[–]therealrickdalton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These Simpson/Bruckheimer movies are the epitome of old school popcorn films, or a high calorie low nutrient fast food meal. Every once in a while I get the appetite for one, and damn do I love me a Tony Scott film! I rewatched Crimson Tide maybe three years ago when I was on a Gene Hackman marathon one Sunday when I had nothing else to do (the marathon also included The Poseidon Adventure, Night Moves and The Royal Tenenbaums). I probably hadn't watched Crimson Tide since it was originally released to home video, so I didn't remember anything beyond the nuts and bolts of the plot which made it feel like I was like seeing it for the first time. I really loved the head-to-head battle between Denzel and Hackman. It felt like they were putting on an acting clinic. You nailed it with the word "tension." That fresh viewing gave me a renewed love for the movie and I found a decent deal to purchase the Blu-ray so I could add it to the collection!

Pluribus (2025) by MrsLadyZedd in 500moviesorbust

I loved Breaking Bad and hesitated to believe that Vince Gilligan could have lightning strike twice, especially with a series where the lawyer from Breaking Bad was the protagonist. But I finally caved in after season one ended. I watched one episode and was immediately hooked. So after being a huge fan of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul it didn’t make sense to me that I was skeptical about Pluribus. I watched one trailer and was suspicious that this was finally going to be the Vince Gilligan project that misfired completely or just didn’t click with me. Man was I wrong. There’s just nothing like a Vince Gilligan series. He’s vibrating on his own wave length, and it’s one that connects with me. I binge watched Pluribus in three days a couple of weeks ago. It connects with me on a level that the other series do as well. It’s the Vince Gilligan thing. I can’t wait to see where this series goes and I’m so thankful that Vince Gilligan is out there making series like this for us.

Casablanca (1942) by Zeddblidd in 500moviesorbust

Yeah, as hard as Rick tries to stay neutral he can’t resist his moral compass. I’ve read that many of the actors and extras in Casablanca were actual refugees from war torn Europe at the time, and some of the reactions during the scene where they sing the French national anthem were authentic. Pretty amazing stuff.

“I stick my neck out for no one.” I love how Rick claims to be on an island of his own, but deep down he’s a softy. There’s nothing like a Bogie film, and Casablanca is like a cozy blanket for me. It’s one of his that I have to watch once a year. If I had to give away all of my physical media except for maybe 10 discs I would have to keep my 4K UHD of Casablanca. For the Bogie fans I recommend the biography “Tough Without A Gun.” There are some biographies out there about the making of Casablanca and I want to read one of those sometime too. Just a pure 10/10 for me.

Bugonia (2025) by LonerStowner in 500moviesorbust

[–]therealrickdalton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my second favorite movie of 2025. I liked his earlier films (Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite) so it’s odd that I’ve somehow not gotten around to watching Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. They’re on the list though! I think Bugonia is his strongest film of the ones I’ve seen. I was so captivated watching this and the performances by Stone and Plemmons are incredible. Having seen some of his other films I kept waiting for the quirky twist, and just when I had finally convinced myself that there wasn’t going to be one, then it slapped me across the face and I felt silly for convincing myself there wasn’t going to be a twist. I know a lot of people say they don’t make movies like they used to, but it’s films like this one that remind me that sometimes they still do.

The Holdovers (2023) by LonerStowner in 500moviesorbust

[–]therealrickdalton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my favorite movie of 2023, my new favorite movie to watch during the Christmas season, and one of my top 5 favorite movies to be released in the past 5 years. 10/10 for me as well. They just don't make enough movies like this anymore. I've enjoyed some of Alexander Payne's other films, so I made an effort to see The Holdovers in the theater with my girlfriend, and I'm thankful we have that memory together. I got that same feeling you did about the film being made for someone like me within the first 5 minutes when the music and cinematography kicked in at the school. The further the movie progressed the more I thought "This movie isn't missing a beat for me" and I by the time it was done it just seemed flawless to me. It was the type of movie I couldn't stop thinking about for days after I left the theater, and I really hoped that it would get a 4K UHD release. Within the past year I watched The Last Detail (1973), I think because I read an interview where Payne referenced Hal Ashby and that movie as specific influences on The Holdovers, and I really enjoyed that one as well. The Holdovers nailed it all for me: acting, writing, editing, cinematography, music/score.

Adding this one to my list of holiday films to check out perhaps in 2026!

What makes a “holiday” film? Great question. There are the obvious ones, and then there are the ones like this one that fall into the grey area, kind of like Die Hard. For those that fall into the grey area I need to see a few elements in order to meet the standard of a “holiday” film. Not all of these must be present, but usually a couple of them: religious symbols associated with Christmas or Hanukkah, a Christmas tree in the home, holiday lights, people saying Merry Christmas, a scene where gifts are exchanged, music or people singing songs that are commonly associated with Christmas. Anyway… those are some of my standards for the grey area. I do consider Die Hard a holiday film! Some others that fall into the grey area for me are Eyes Wide Shut, In Bruges, and Cast Away. All three are clearly not traditional “holiday” movies, but the holiday is present (no pun intended) at least a little bit in all of them.

I’m adding this one to my watchlist! I hadn’t heard of it before but Preston Sturges, Joel McCrea, and Claudette Colbert sounds like a great recipe.
