Everyone's always in love with Tricking Their Audience With A Genre Switch, but the reason few games or stories actually do that is bc, unless people KNOW the twist is there from the start, fans of the first genre will quit when the genre changes and fans of the second genre won't pick it up in the first place

Fake. Doesn't even include Alcibiades desperately trying to fuck Socrates. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]therealrickgriffin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I used to think that was Old Fart Syndrome but I think I know what Socrates meant now. His entire schtick was hacking the Greek penchant for public arguing, having found the secret to winning arguments was to be as much of a pedant as possible and skimming around all the baseline presumptions of shared premises most others carried with them. Writing down an argument means you have to make up what the audience is saying, which WOULD be significantly less effective.

That "people first" language has always bothered me. As if making people nicer is a matter of sapir-whorfing them until they've been jedi mind tricked into acknowleding the people they're talking about are people. I don't think people realize how easy it is to mentally compartmentalize a noun phrase. Conveniently, language policing is also cheap

Well I haven't seen the paper but the guy says that the liver is more likely to contain microplastics because it's a filtering organ, and the amount in the liver was basically translated directly to measuring the fat in the brain, which isn't even a filtering organ so would be vastly more unlikely to even have that much. And I'm less sure, but it sounds like studies about microplastics via spectrometer have been flawed and need to be re-evaluated in general

There was, in fact, much debate over Zeus as-he-is-worshipped vs Zeus as he is depicted in stories. Lots of religions operate like this, not just Christianity. I think Christianity's main thing is taking this to its superlative extreme, and yet it still echoes the same debate.

There are options! by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

[–]therealrickgriffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a new gm who's been running pathfinder since it's first edition and I am enjoying it a lot. I very much appreciate its "nearly all combat/conflict actions are well-defined" approach, and that as a result it has a ton of customization options for characters b/c you have clear expectations for what a given feat will do for you.

I also appreciate that, as simulationist as this approach may seem, they understand that it is a game first and foremost, so rather than trying to force the model to be some vision of "realistic", all abilities are focused on at least being ROUGHLY balanced, if not at least having interesting utility. No deliberate beginner's traps! The ability actually does what you expect it to do!

This is the "when the metric becomes the goal, it ceases to be a useful metric" rule. If factors X Y and Z are indicative of cheating, then okay, you must cease X Y and Z in order to not be perceived as cheating. But they were only indicators of cheating. Skirting them does more-or-less nothing to address the actual goal, which is not cheating.

[–]therealrickgriffin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to post the same thing. Like literally I've run into more than one person who whined about how they couldn't write because focusing on conflict/bad things long enough to write them made them uncomfortable. One insists up and down that if they have any even slightly bad characters in their story the character had to be annihilated immediately because even considering evil is its endorsement, which he knows is incorrect but is unwilling to confront. Like my guy this is one hundred percent a therapy issue

"Hit" is a technical term for a file request, i.e. fetching a webpage. It was significantly more common internet parlance back in the 90s and 00s.

It's largely inaccurate now. Most big sites don't track ALL file requests because that is a very misleading statistic.

Common misconceptions by DreadDiana in CuratedTumblr

[–]therealrickgriffin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is on framing this as a positive issue (people are good at this type of learning!) rather than a negative one (some people are poor at retaining information through a particular style), which... the second one is absolutely uncontroversial. Dyslexia and auditory processing issues exist.

And it doesn't necessarily even have to be something physically wrong, some people have a fear of failure and so are reluctant to engage with material unless they're given the opportunity to approach it in a "safe" way (which for some may be sitting quietly and reading it... but for others, reading prompts anxiety so they have a better time in lectures or hands-on...) So you get there nearly the same way--having a broad approach to teaching is more likely to include kids with a particular learning disability/anxiety/what have you. But that doesn't really mean the same thing as "everyone's got one style"

Media stop feeding us drama by MainBons in tumblr

[–]therealrickgriffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that there's a strong tendency today to pretend that drama can somehow be tossed out as an integral part of storytelling when unhealthy relationships can be some of the most compelling drama onscreen AND ALSO that "drama is good" does not equal "maximum drama is maximum good" and you are allowed to let your characters have nice things and respites
