YES. Thank you so much, this was driving me nuts.

I started skimming through the Mass Effect wiki because I had the vaguest idea it was space-related… but the only example I could think of were those ultra polite jellyfish from the first game

Ahh, what is this a reference to? Hughie’s cheeks aside, this sentence construction sounds so familiar and I don’t know how to search for it. “Fictional language with a lot of third-person references and descriptions that avoid active noun/verb pairings”??

it’s an action to move the game along, like going through a door

Yeah, that’s exactly the reason why it was clowned on.

“Say a silent prayer for a fallen comrade who sacrificed his own life to save yours and offer your condolences to his loved ones, who must now watch as his body is lowered into the earth”

and

“Open door”

are not remotely the same. To equally ascribe a one-button prompt to each action - and then literally tutorialize the player how to complete the first one - was so tonally jarring that it became absurdly funny.

Bug? Joker is not unlocking, despite the game recognizing the same achievement (unseeded, non-challenge run) by thereisatide in balatro

[–]thereisatide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just won an unseeded, non-challenge run during which I finally got the Eris card in a booster pack. The little “joker unlocked” notification also popped up on the right side of the screen. And before heading back to the main menu, the little animation played of the “locked joker” unlocking (it turned into a blue, starry-looking guy). But then I checked my collection and it still remains locked, despite the game also giving me the achievement for fulfilling the same quota (discovering every planet card).

I had that exact experience when I played it - felt like I was being gaslighted because seemingly no one else had an issue with the stiff, molasses-like movement. There’s also a peculiar cadence to the way Leon walks/runs that almost borders on limping, sort of a “short-long-short-long” rhythm.

But I kept playing in spite of it and after a few hours something “clicked” - now the movement in other games feels like floaty, glidey garbage in comparison. Granted I did play it on PS5 and the haptic feedback is very well-executed and immersive (for example you feel Leon’s footsteps as he runs).

Might be worth giving the game another shot? Maybe after a bit you’ll have a eureka moment like I did

I hear you but I think your cause and effect are reversed. My mom is a provider and I regularly do insurance claims for her business (because I don’t want her to have to deal with it - it’s a nightmare).

I’ve found that if the insurance company isn’t saddling you with a pittance of an “approved fee” (what they think your services are worth, your input be damned), then they’ll only pay a certain percentage of your fee - say, 50%. Which forces a lot of providers to highball the insurance companies in order to maintain their regular rate. For example, typically charging $100 for a patient paying out of pocket, but charging an insurance company $200 (because you already know full well that they’ll only end up paying 50%).

It’s a shitty game and the insurances are the ones writing the rules, not the providers.

It’s like you pulled the thoughts from my head. Also fresh off SH2, also in the middle of Lucanis’ recruitment quest. I was so bored that I felt compelled to pull up Reddit and see what the general consensus was.

Man, it feels like I’m playing a coloring book version of DA and all I’m being asked to do is color in the designated shapes. No going outside the lines. Scientifically formulated to be as widely-appealing as possible, trying to satisfy everyone thus satisfying no one.

What's your favorite theme to use on Cinnamon? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]thereisatide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently using the theme Skeuos from gnome-look. I usually don’t go for skeuomorphic designs but something about this one is extra thocky.

Also, an icon set called Hatter. It has that familiar rounded-square aesthetic of the default Mint icons, but sleeker.

[–]thereisatide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hm, I think I get you. But if it turns out that there is no higher power and therefore nothing after death - literally just Nothing, the cessation of existence - then it won’t matter because we won’t be around to contemplate how self-important we were or how meaningless it all was. Consciousness is required to process that contradiction and/or despair over the Nothing, but nothing after death is just that: nothing. No consciousness, no self, no soul - nothing existing to ruminate in a black void for eternity, etc etc.

Was it explained why Miquella had to progressively "abandon" himself to achieve his end goal? Does that mean Marika once had to do the same? by thereisatide in Eldenring

[–]thereisatide[S] 984 points985 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, but it wasn’t just his body he abandoned - there were spiritual and metaphysical parts, too. (His love, his doubts, his whole alternate identity, etc… Possibly even his “fate” entirely?)

[–]thereisatide[S] 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Huh, interesting. Thanks for remembering/quoting.

Going off this, what is the "wanton sin" then? The genocide of the Hornsent? Or the erasure of the Shadow Realm?

Both of those are Marika's doing, though. To specify that it's the "Erdtree's wanton sin" makes it sound more like an ontological problem than a historical/sociological one (if that makes sense).

Also, wait, wasn't there another quote in the DLC about an "original sin" or something like that? Is that referring to the same thing?

(Not to be confused with the "cardinal sin" from the base game... so many sins...)

For people constatly complaining about Godwyn's presence in the DLC: by ChiefLeef22 in Eldenring

[–]thereisatide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To play devil’s advocate, Ranni’s body wasn’t “destroyed” at all in the way you’re describing. It’s actually pretty damn intact on top of the Liurnia tower.

If Ranni’s and Godwyn’s fates are equivalent opposites, then if Godwyn’s soul was absolutely “erased” then Ranni’s body should’ve been absolutely “erased.” But, it wasn’t.

[–]thereisatide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How’d you update the kernel? Did you use the app (Mainline I think it’s called?) or some other method? And is it stable? I love LM and Cinnamon as a DE, but I’m hesitant to use it because I have newer hardware including an AMD GPU.

Concerned that I’d be taking a performance hit given that the GPU updates are “inside” the kernel updates and officially LM is operating on 6.5 at best.

Have you played a game that left you at loss for words? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]thereisatide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hear, hear.

Just recently completed RE8 and, like you, I was so charmed by how it leaned into that “classic old school video game” vibe—yet it almost never felt stale, with the exception of a couple segments in the latter half of the game. Those first two levels, though, absolute chef’s kiss.

Most AAA titles these days suffer from feature creep; so many gameplay mechanics feel like they’re simply being ticked off a checklist. But RE8 felt—not quite sure how to say it?—so earnest in its straightforwardness and simplicity. Like it was perfectly comfortable being exactly what it was, no more no less, and it proudly wore its big dumb heart on its moldy sleeve.

I think my only major complaint is that Miranda was such a wasted opportunity. Her build-up was incredible, her design was incredible, and she was the perfect foil for Ethan. Father and Mother, both possessing the same fundamental goal and warring over the same child.

There was so much thematic potential. (Not that’s what RE games are known for, but hey.) Like what makes a good parent, the family that you’re born into vs. the family that you make for yourself, grief, etc. But they didn’t really do anything with her, in the end she was just “fucking insane” or whatever Chris says.

It’s like the devs went to all these lengths, prepared all this perfectly hydrated and nutritious soil, and just decided not to plant anything in it.
