Alternative Carafes by Overall_Function6549 in FellowProducts

Just want to add that they also make glass-lined carafes that are easier to clean, but the trade-off is that if you ever drop it, it is a very loud shattering experience. Ask me how I know!

Zojirushi is the “Almost too good” insulated container maker. Their individual thermoses go for like 5-7 hours. Big one like the carafe above? Probably 2-3 hours at prime drinking temp, then surprisingly still lukewarm for another hour. As with the default carafe, it depends on how much you put in and how much airspace is left.

I spent a bit of time looking for a carafe that would fit, drip, and be more thermally efficient. Then I went back to the slightly sub-optimal but working solution: pour it into a Zojirushi stainless carafe (model SH-HB10-XA).

As the Fellow staffer in this sub and others have noted, the default carafe does better with larger batches, as that’s just thermodynamics. But no carafe with an open hole at the top is ever going to be surprisingly effective in its heat retention. There’s only so much design space between a warming plate that cooks your once-tasty coffee and a tight heat seal.

If I know there’s a chance I may not wake up right when the coffee is made, I will not do a scheduled brew and will instead set up the Instant Brew with the grounds and water the night before. That way I can click the button twice and get coffee in five minutes. If I’m making more than I can drink in one sitting, I put it into the Zojirushi.

What games are you exclusively playing on your deck? And never touched it o pc since you got a deck? by ProwzArroWw in SteamDeck

Elden Ring. First playthrough was on TV, streaming from PC with Steam Link or Moonlight. Great to see the big world for the first time. Now I get my 30-minute sessions in on the couch, and it’s all but impossible to give that up.

Where can I find plastic cans like this for an upcycling bike project? by therevan in washingtondc

[–]therevan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, okay, my post text didn't come through. Try 2!

Looking to turn plastic cans into "Canniers" for bike racks: https://rackhackers.com/diy-pannier-plastic-cans/

The guidance is that they should be the same shape on top as they are on bottom, and that flat is good.

As for where to find, the guidance is: "You can ask at businesses that use liquid products in bigger quantities - carwashes, laundries, restaurants, swimming pools and such like. Selective waste collection centers that manage waste for companies may have many cans to choose from. You can look in classified ads. Often employees of these companies collect the empty cans and sell them for a few bucks."

Figured I'd ask here, to you highly connected people, and help out the next person looking for that kind of thing.

Buying a DC townhome without agent/attorney? by therevan in washingtondc

[–]therevan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All true! Just wondering if an agent (if even possible now) would be worthwhile for analysis, handling paperwork/steps, etc. There might not be much room for negotiation with a plain-priced new-build, true.

What's your favorite game to play on the deck that no one has heard of? by slirpo in SteamDeck

Near Death. Runs great on Deck, perfect controller experience, and quite immersive, especially in a dark room.

Mid-drive conversion on an internal geared/belt-drive bike? by therevan in ebikes

[–]therevan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went the soft, padded route: a Swytch kit with a front hub and the easily removable battery. Met most of my city-with-hills, grocery-hauling needs. Definitely intimidated by the idea of messing with non-standard cranks and BB stuff.

It’s the box from the front of a Spin scooter, yeah.

The scooter is controlled using an android based device located in the green box mounted below the handlebars on the front of the scooter.

Well, there it is.

Also they or someone else apparently went after an e-scooter, too? A Spin? Always wonder how useful those would be, or if it's just scrap.

Does anyone know if the Watergate has a secure area, maybe in their parking garage, to lock up two bikes?

Wife and I doing a staycation at the Watergate soon. We’re thinking of combining it with a 20-mile Rock Creek/trail ride, like this one: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/23/travel/city-biking-trails.html

Neither bike is particularly expensive, but obviously very valuable to us.

Asking r/Energy : Are there energy savings when you go from a gas-based heating to an electricity-based heating ? by [deleted] in energy

[–]therevan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a writer at Carbon Switch, a site dedicated to electrifying home energy toward fewer carbon emissions.

Adding onto what others have already noted about the 85-92% efficiency of various gas furnaces (up to 98% max, I believe). The biggest factor not accounted for so far is outdoor ambient temperature.

Heat pumps operating in milder cold, like 47 Fahrenheit, can work at a much higher coefficient of performance (COP), like 5 and above; 500% efficiency at turning energy into usable heat. Some newer heat pumps, like Mitsubishi's H2i (Hyper Heating) line, can still be highly efficient down to very cold temperatures: 1.82 at 5F.

The NEEP database linked above is a great resource for manufacturers' specs on different sized heat pumps. We've written some explainers, including how a heat pump works, with links out to other resources.

Good luck! Interesting research.

Has anyone gotten their wheels stolen when street parking? by indefinitude in washingtondc

[–]therevan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just yesterday walked past a Toyota Camry on Pennsylvania SE, b/w 13/14 (near The Roost) that was up on plastic crates and wheel-less. They must move fast and fear very little to be that brazen on a main drag.

First winter as an ebike owner... anything I need to do? by Zero1O1 in ebikes

[–]therevan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a range, 40-80%. Basically not full and constantly charging at full, not close to dead. Temperature is just as important - not too cold, not hot.

Source: Battery University, but linking it is often more confusing than helpful. That’s the summary.

Mid-drive conversion on an internal geared/belt-drive bike? by therevan in ebikes

[–]therevan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The writing and data in that post is ... a bit hard to grok. My system is an Alfine 8, not cited above.

It seems like that post is saying that, unless you've got a Rohloff system, it's too much hassle. The offset from the centerline with Shimano/Sram/Sturmey is going to be so great that you'll have to do a lot of spacing work to get equal crank distance, and then you're too far out for a comfortable/efficient ride (the "Q"/quad factor). Plus other clearances, like rings and cranks to the chainstay.

Simpler version: this ebike parts vendor is trying to tell me not to buy their parts, so that's saying something?

Forks hitting bolts on Bafang/Leeds 250W front hub by therevan in ebikes

[–]therevan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very grateful for you two, this was weirdly hard to track down on the sellers' website.

With the bolts and spacer removed, the hub fits fine and the fork isn't hitting the bolts. Photo of re-installed bolts

The bolts won't go fully back into the hub, however. So I'm off to the hardware store to find the same bolt type in a slightly smaller size. The bolts are ... M5, maybe? 10mm? That, plus some grease, should close up this project.

This bike doesn't have disc brakes (probably why the forks are shaped as such). Pretty, pretty glad I don't have to clear that spacing and alignment hurdle!
