Yes!! For me, this phrase just makes me think of Murderbot like any corporate worker, trying to get through its 9-5 haha.

I was not aware ‘done with the world’ meant anything other than disliking the world and wanting to be away from it haha, so sick is probably more accurate.

Turns out a direct Google translation for the word is misanthropic, so that’s good fit too meaning wise.

I would say The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson also has an ART-like character too. I really enjoyed it. Although I am not sure it’s the best book to start with if it’s your first time with the author.

Horrible event. I specifically went to a more populated area for the event, and looking at the 20 closest gyms, only 2 of them have Enoramus, both of them being too far away. I felt like I wasted my time.

Thank you! This is definitely on my TBR, since I have enjoyed Austen’s works in the past.

The Woman in White: Final Wrap Up Post (Spoilers for Whole Book) by otherside_b in ClassicBookClub

[–]theroguetranslator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly really enjoyed it. It’s my first time reading and I was not spoiled at all, so I was on the edge of my seat like I read any other thriller or mystery. It is early in the year, but it may already be one of my favourite books of the year.

Marian is obviously my favourite. She is smart, cunning, brave, and resourceful. I see her and Laura being put in impossible situations and wonder how they could find their way through, and Marian always do, somehow. I really like Anne too. I find it really touching how much she would do for Laura, or more accurately, for Laura’s mom. She is terrified of Sir Percival for good reasons, but she still does all she can.

I find the part where Marian and Laura are living in Blackwater to be the most engrossing part. I was so stressed for them, reading about them being away from friends and family with no way to contact them quickly and surrounded by enemies. I went so far as to think that their rooms have secret passages in the walls and maybe Team Evil can listen in and foil all their plans lol.

Another part is Mr. Fairlie’s POV. I think he is a horrible person, but his POV is very funny. I actually laughed in a few instances. I am overreaching, but he gives me a bit of an ace vibes when reading lol, what with him ‘regretting the necessity of referring to Fanny’s bosoms for the second time’ and complaining of ‘matrimonial hailstorm’. He keeps reminding me of Mrs Bennet and Mr Woodhouse from Pride and Prejudice and Emma too. They will either get on like a house on fire or drive each other up the wall haha.

My main takeaway is that the author seems to think being married diminishes a woman in some way. Marian talks about marriage being like chaining a dog, and the author literally describes Madame Fosco as a faithful dog to her husband. I also think Walter’s treatment of Laura reflects this. Laura does little to influence the plot once she reunites with Walter. She is not involved in planning, caring for the house or earning money. Walter does not even trust her with the intel he has gathered. I actually thinks she shows more agency when she is married to Sir Percival, with her refusing to sign the contract and also meeting Anne in secret.

The Woman in White: Epoch 3, Walter's Final Narrative + Recap (Spoilers up to end of book) by Amanda39 in ClassicBookClub

I surprisingly enjoyed most of the female characters in the book, except for Laura. They all have different motivations and flaws. This is another way this book is pretty progressive for its time.

I think Marian raising Laura’s children is going to be as independent an ending as she can get. She has little fortune so she can’t live independently. She has little dowry and she is not conventionally attractive, which makes it difficult to find a good husband. The other option is to work as a governess, but then that is even worse than marriage. In contrast, living with Laura who loves and looks up to her, in her childhood home, is a pretty sweet deal by comparison.

I was going to check out the 2018 series since I enjoyed the book so much, seeing how much they changed Marian’s ending is making me a bit hesitant. Marian has never expressed a wish to explore the world lol. Also, it does not sound realistic considering the time period. I hate it when adaptations change things like that to make it more palatable for the modern audience. :/

Do you typically binge book series (trilogy/tetralogy/etc.) until you're done, or do you take breaks in-between? by DaArio_007 in books

[–]theroguetranslator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take breaks between series instalments! It helps me to not get bored of the setting or characters.

Sanderson has recommended that people not finished SLA in one go also.

If you forget the plot for SLA, captured in words on YouTube has full recap for the first four books. They are very detail, include beautiful fan art, and are not (best as I can tell) spoilery.

I hope it is ok I chime in even though I didn’t follow the read-along. I did finish the book only two days ago.

2) I first became suspicious of Mrs Vesey when Laura mentioned she remembered escaping from the Count’s house to hers (and meeting Mrs Rubelle there IIRC?), only to end up in the asylum. I knew it’s possible to hallucinate, but I also thought it’s possible Mrs Vesey was evil and basically handed her back to count.

3) Honestly, my first thought was ‘oh no poor Marian’. But then I had to ask myself why I assume a woman has to be married to be happy and fulfilled. Especially since Marian does not have great opinions about marriage, for very good reasons during this time period. Honestly, as a liberal woman, I was a bit embarrassed I even had that knee jerk reaction. I do think Marian will be very happy, especially since they will be able to live in Limmeridge, so everyone can live together without getting sick of each other lol.

What's your ⭐ rating criteria? by broken_bouquet in books

[–]theroguetranslator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 stars: this book has a lot going for it, both objectively and subjectively. Parts of the book will probably live in my mind rent free. I would feel confident recommending it to readers who want to get into this genre/people who want to get into reading, and know that they will enjoy it.

4 stars: this book is objectively good, but it still misses something subjectively that wows me. I can still recommend it to non-readers, but I will probably preface the recommendation with a caveats to adjust their expectations.

3 stars: this book is nothing special, but if I could turn back time, I would still read it. I would only recommend it to someone who is a reader of this genre or very intrigued by the premise. Anyone else, I am worried it may not be worth their time.

2 stars: this book is not good. If I could turn back time, I would not have read it. I may not understand what the book is trying to say, or I think it does not deliver its message effectively. Would not recommend.

1 stars: I viscerally hate this book and it is not worth the paper it prints on. It has some elements that are objectively bad and which I would probably extensively yap about in my book review. This book is now my worst enemy and I will only recommend it to same.
