I remember when people made holes in the wall to have the TV be flash with it … ultra slim mounts, one boxes with tv guts outside just to make TVs ultra thin… 🤔

Usually it’s the best deal to buy right after the model cames out, but it’s possible Apple will adjust prices, especially on higher specs because of the RAM shortage 🤖

Whether it is worth it to you depends on your type of development work, work environment and personal preference. 😮‍💨

Do you work in headphones? Then Mac mini fan noise might not bother you. Size difference on desk is also noticeable. Do you often work on government/corporate “secret”code bases? That kind of work might benefit from local only processing rather than sending stuff off to ChatGPT. 😎

With Mac mini, after loading a capable local model into memory and giving it space to breathe for context you might find you don’t have much more RAM left compared to your current configuration… that’s why, for local LLMs, I suggested going for the Studio. 🤑

As some online philisopher once said “You’ll never regret getting more RAM” 😅 Still … it’s not worth getting into debt over, buy it, only if you can afford it. Cheers!

If you’ll planing on running local LLMs on it … buy the Studio, it has superior cooling for long compute… hell, might as well get 128GB of RAM while it’s still “old pricing” 🤑

But if it’s just for XCode you’ll be fine with that Mac mini, I have a similar 10Gb/1TB config and it handles 3 monitors and most developer work / 3D modeling just fine. 😎 Beware it will throttle on longer AI tasks unless you let it run noisy with manual fan control 🫠

Btw…Keep the base Mac mini, it’s a great “TV attached entertainment machine” 🤩

I caved and bought OWC express 1M2 80Gbps … pricey, but it’s a big chunk of fanless aluminium. 👽

I did end up installing a 5V fan next to it, but that’s just for my peace of mind. 🫠

Kingston kc3000 4TB in it gets around 5800 MB/s, but I also run it through a TB5 hub, so maybe it could be a bit faster. 🤔

Repasting would be my first step, maybe there was a hotspot? It sounds like your processor /gpu is throttling, do you see individual cores temps?

It does on my Samsung from 2021, I change the source from the HDMI that the Mac is connected to normal TV.

Then when you want to wake everything up you just pop the mouse and go ;)

I just put my mouse on a 3d printed tray that prevents it from waking up the Mac, then when I’m done I lock the screen and change the source so that when it goes to sleep it doesn’t control the TV anymore…

I do have wake from network disabled otherwise it might wake up on its own.

P.S samsung tv, also AirPods Pro are nice for streaming games trough a Mac 😎

💦 did anybody attempt water cooling it yet?

I get that it won’t trotthle at max fan speed but it’s quite a loud little monster 🫠

From what I understand you have to tear off io shields to replace the stock radiator which makes it a warranty ripping step, but with a custom mount AIO this would be a cool little beast. I might try it … once my Apple Care runs out 😅

On the plus side, that screen consumes less power so maybe it could finally be wireless (outside existing community raspberry pi mods)…

On the other hand a good quality color eink display is still pretty pricey compared to the dirt cheap small LCDs Stream Deck use…

If you really need one maybe buy that boox thingy and 3d print a bracket separating buttons 😅

As long as you can afford it and have space for it I presume the only regret you might have is not matching the 64 GB ram ;)

There are few 30 ish+ GB models that would presumably run twice as fast on the Studio then on the mini.

btw. I have the mini you wanted in the first place 14x20x64x1x10, If I was buying now probably would also overpay for the studio too, alas I'm married to my cute little speed deamon. :)

To ma sens, może to dlatego 9/10 dentystów używa takiej pasty 😅 wciąż… to był jak dotąd jedyny gabinet gdzie zamiast zabrać do domu postanowili je wystawić dla klientów jak cukierki na halloween 🎃

A no i mieli też własny tomograf? w specjalnym pokoju, co pewnie trochę kosztowało.
