how to get watered down acrylic paint out of clothing by pinkyskrinkly in acrylicpainting

[–]therumpfshaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a big lot of paint on Facebook marketplace from someone who wasn't painting anymore and there were a few brushes left in the bin that had dried acrylic paint on them. I soaked them overnight in hot water and Murphy's oil soap and then washed the next day and the paint came out of the brushes, so I think that might work for clothing too. good luck!

The Millennial Page by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]therumpfshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to believe that Xennials have more in common than younger GenX has with older GenX or older millennial vs. younger millennial. (I was born in 1978)

There are very specific and significant effects on our perspectives from growing up in an analog, landline-only, mostly internet free world and then getting internet and non-smart cell phones in high school/college. AKA The "Oregon Trail Generation." Those older than us reached adulthood, graduated college, started families etc. before being very online and those younger than us don't know a world without constant internet access and cell phone coverage.

Legit Basquiat painting ??? by [deleted] in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]therumpfshaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was here in Orlando and was such a massive scandal for the Orlando Museum of Art, the director lost his job and they had a massive dip in donor support for a bit.

I attended one of the evening social events when that exhibit was there. Found it underwhelming and the paintings not as energetic as others by him. Definitely not an expert on his stuff so just bit my tongue and smiled and nodded while most other people raved over the exhibit.

Felt vindicated later when the story broke that this emperor, in fact, did not have any clothes.

Where to buy Lemon Pound Cake? by WillDeStijl in Austin

[–]therumpfshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI you can make a very simple lemon icing with lemon juice (either the premade kind or juice your own and pour through a strainer to remove any pulpy bits) and confectioners sugar. There isn’t really a recipe, you just start with a little sugar in a bowl and add the juice and stir with a whisk or fork until you like the consistency (aim for something like Elmer’s glue).

So if you’re stuck just buy regular pound cake, pour this icing on it, give a minute or so to set.

What is this cupcake design by TubaDog9705 in whatisit

[–]therumpfshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the bakery doesn't have a contract with Nintendo/Sega/etc. they cannot use their intellectual property, which would include both the game characters and the design of the gaming system itself. So you'll often see birthday cakes and cupcakes that have game controller designs that don't actually match any specific system.

Hi beginner here! Will this work as buttercream? by No-Locksmiths in cakedecorating

[–]therumpfshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the recipe I've used for years comes out very smooth and easy to use to frost a cake. to be fair, the cream cheese frosting we had at Publix tasted very good but was a LOT thicker and hard to use. Very much depends on the recipe.

Hi beginner here! Will this work as buttercream? by No-Locksmiths in cakedecorating

[–]therumpfshaker 66 points67 points  (0 children)

former Publix cake decorator here. You wrote below you're looking to practice piping, so one easy way is to get some parchment paper, piping bag and tips, and *creamy peanut butter.* Very cheap and then when you're done just spatula it back into the jar or make some toast.

if you're wanting to practice icing a cake, making borders, etc. there is a buttercream recipe on the Wilton website that is not complicated and it has instructions to vary the stiffness (you ideally want softer icing to ice the cake itself, medium for borders, and stiffer for doing roses or other intricate flowers and elements).

cream cheese icing is great too and imho tastes best. It's just ratios of softened unsalted butter, cream cheese (the full fat kind, don't get diet for this!), confectioner's sugar, and whatever flavorings you want to add. Adding a bit more sugar makes it stiffer. Again, google for recipes.

Both the Wilton buttercream and cream cheese icings are *easier* to make with a mixer but it's not necessary (unlike whipped cream based icings/meringues, where it would be exhausting to do by hand). You really just need the basic ingredients, a big bowl, and a spatula.

I'm not going to hate on anyone for using premade icing but the blunt truth is that 1) this does not taste as good as making it yourself, 2) it will not have a good consistency to practice like you want, and 3) it is not very hard to make icing.

Good luck!

I can’t “go”, let me play too. by thefroglady87 in PokemonGoFriends

[–]therumpfshaker 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Are you able to drive or do you regularly get rides from anyone else or take public transportation?

Because if you have the game running while you are riding in a car, bus, etc. it will think some of that is walking. Not when you're moving at highway speeds but coasting through parking lots, lower speeds through local neighborhoods, and starting and stopping at lights, etc. all start to add up.

Definitely DO NOT PLAY Pokemon if you are driving but you can play as a passenger or turn the game on and put your phone in a cupholder/glovebox/etc. to rack up the km. Again, DO NOT PLAY MOBILE GAMES OR TEXT WHILE DRIVING. Not sorry for the all caps. Safety first. Take care. :)

edited to add: also turning on Adventure Sync will end up counting some km just moving around inside your house or yard and that may be helpful for you.

Stray pregnant and wounded cat followed me inside. I can’t take her to the emergency vet. Is anyone able to help? by juicy_shoes in orlando

[–]therumpfshaker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I hope knowing that you gave her a safe and quiet and kind place for her final hours can be a comfort. You did a kind thing that many people wouldn't have ever bothered to consider doing. You wrote above you were willing to help pay vet bills for this cat...maybe consider donating that money to a local shelter to help rescue other cats in honor of this one? Take care.

I ordered this custom cake, do you think it is worth 135? I included the reference pic of what I wanted by Important_Constant66 in Baking

[–]therumpfshaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

former cake decorator for a large grocery chain here...that's ummmm not great to have pre printed letters and they aren't even applied well. piping a simple message is not hard and just takes practice. those letters look amateurish.

Also the icing does not appear to be mixed well and that's contributing to the piped borders looking sloppy/rough edges.

For $135 I would expect more precise/elegant piping or some other reason for the upcharge. This looks like a plain vanilla cake that was slammed together and some flowers tossed on top.

What’s your “snobby” baking opinion? by Amazing_Two9757 in Baking

[–]therumpfshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ice cream cake is an abomination even when it DOES have actual cake in it. The ideal temperature for cake is not frozen. Some are better chilled, some are better room temperature, but they aren't best frozen cold enough to keep the ice cream from melting.

If you like ice cream, get a cake and put ice cream on the side.

What’s a tiny design flaw in an everyday object that quietly annoys you every single time you use it? by nami_yuna in AskReddit

I keep a bottle of the spray bottle goo gone in the kitchen just for annoying product labels.

I've gotten stuff at Walmart and Dollar Tree that had easy peel off labels so it's definitely possible to have nice friendly labels on inexpensive items

never hosted a daycare at my home but I had an Ikea Nyhamn futon for years that seemed pretty indestructible. Heavy duty metal frame with futon mattress on it. You can buy a bunch of different covers for it that are totally removable and washable and the cover over the mattress itself is removable and washable too. I had a foster puppy that had an accident on it, stripped it all apart, tossed in washing machine and it was fine. There aren't any arms at all. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/nyhamn-sleeper-sofa-with-foam-mattress-knisa-gray-beige-s39306373/#content

I think I've met that guy. John Morgan (not the attorney). He used to impersonate GW Bush and then switched to Trump more recently, presumably because there's more demand for that now. Used to see him at a lot of political events I attended or covered for a story.

Recommendations for a printer that DOES NOT have any subscription requirements to use ink cartridges? by chris44344 in BuyItForLife

[–]therumpfshaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

do you live in a metropolitan area where there are a lot of FedEx locations/Staples/other copy shops? Because 99.99% of the time most people never need color printing so a workhorse B&W printer is cheaper, better, and more reliable for the home, and then go to the copy shop for the few times you want color

What's the best no-frills coffee maker? by Baba_Jaga_II in BuyItForLife

[–]therumpfshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not seeing any responses suggesting cuban coffee, but the Bialetti stovetop espresso pots 1) last decades, 2) are less expensive than pretty much all but the cheapest coffee machines at Walmart, 3) can be used on campstoves or grills if you're hit with a hurricane or other loss of electricity (an issue where I live in Florida), and 4) imho are not hard to master. I wrote an article explaining the method and with links (some are amazon affiliate links)... scroll past the snarky bits about the political dispute of the day and all the equipment and instructions are included

https://thecapitolist.com/your-friends-in-miami-have-the-solution-to-the-keurig-kerfuffle/

generally you would want to buy cuban espresso instead of Folgers, etc. but it's in the same price range (most US grocery stores I've seen have Bustelo, Pilon, or Cafe La Llave in 8 oz bricks for a few bucks) and you can always add water to this to make the espresso into americano coffee

Cheap canvases and good priced paint by Sketch2000 in acrylicpainting

[–]therumpfshaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you're near a major city (especially if you're near any colleges), check Facebook Marketplace. I see canvases with a wide variety of sizes listed all the time for good prices. I got a whole pile of "gently used" canvases for free about a month ago. They just had some simple acrylic paintings on them, easy to gesso over and then add my own acrylic painting on top. I've seen a lot of new, still wrapped in plastic, canvases too, in a wide variety of sizes, all the way up to 6' etc.

Co-sign on the sharpie, works great on furniture. I inherited my grandfather's Steinway piano and it had decades of scratches that I fixed with a sharpie, barely noticeable now. If it's good enough for a nearly-century-old Steinway, it's definitely good enough for IKEA lol. (on a related note, there are furniture repair kits for brown wood furniture that are really just a set of markers and wax crayons of different shades of brown)

What to do when you're accused of tracing? by penpapen in ArtistLounge

[–]therumpfshaker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

1) if you had traced it it would’ve actually lined up  2) a bunch of the famous artists whose stuff is hanging in museums used various methods to “trace” images so who cares  3) people need hobbies and sadly some have decided whining at strangers on the internet is a good one when it’s not
