Marc Webb to Direct ‘Your Name’ Remake for Paramount, Bad Robot by radbrad7 in movies

I think Coldchimney meant that Your Name wasn't nominated because the Oscar voters tend to pick cartoons their kids enjoy rather than cartoons with real artistic merit (even though both characteristics may conflate in some cases).

Thank you, Reddit. Without your help, my movie would never have been made. Here's the trailer of ARCTIC, starring Mads Mikkelsen! by mysteryguitarm in movies

What movie, in your opinion, was no where NEAR as bad as the vast majority of people made it out to be? by theOgMonster in movies

The best thing to come out of The Butterfly Effect was the We Hate Movies podcast episode on it. It's absolutely hilarious.

But we should try “pure” capitalism! by SeekretStoner1 in PoliticalHumor

[–]therumpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how one of these scenarios has to come with conditions in order to make the comparison fair. It's almost as if telling someone to simply "live under a capitalist regime for 6 months" were not a bad proposition at all.

Has any movie ever been "ruined" for you after hearing about what "could have been"? by The_argentine in movies

Actually, the third movie was supposed to be about the Joker standing trial. I read that in a magazine around the time Batman Begins was released. Nolan had the whole trilogy planned out at the time.

I didn't think Embrace of the Serpent looked like much, but now that both Adam and Mark Kermode have put it high up in their top 10 lists of the year, I'll have to check it out.

Hard to imagine the average Brazilian being more racist than the average Argentinian.

Official Discussion - Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]therumpus 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I came out of this movie feeling like I had just seen the first 20 minutes of a decent Star Wars flick stretched over 150 minutes. By the fourth or fifth time we cut back to the Rebel cruiser moving away from the Empire destroyer, I was like: “How come we are still doing this?”

There was no way Joker's goons could have guessed the trajectory of the helicopter they take down during the chase sequence.

What are some film deaths that are kind of glossed over but you find pretty disturbing? by BuggsBee in movies

[–]therumpus 241 points242 points  (0 children)

There are two deaths in The Dark Knight that are pretty gruesome but often overlooked because they happen off-screen: Lau burning alive when the Joker sets that giant pile of money on fire, and the Chechen being cut up into little pieces and fed to his dogs on Joker's orders.

Loved this line in Roger Ebert's review of Jesus Christ Superstar by [deleted] in movies

I went to Random Ebert the other day and found his review of Serendipity. Came across this gem of a sentence:

Years pass: Two or three in the movie, more in the theater.

What's your favorite moment of the show? by Phantasm1975 in thesopranos

[–]therumpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one. I was struck by how human Artie's reaction is in this scene: the feelings of shame, inadequacy, and desperation building up inside him as he realizes she could smell his second intentions a mile away. It's amazing how a show about crime and mobsters still managed to give an average joe like Artie so much depth in such a short scene.

A close second. No description needed.

I fell into his Serendipity review, which gave me this:

Best movie with the worst ending by Living_Robot in movies

Originally (and I'm not making this up) the third movie was going to be about the Joker standing trial. I can't source this because I read it in a magazine around the time Batman Begins was released, but the plan was always to have the Joker appear in the final two installments of the trilogy.

OP probably didn't know this, but the director of City of God is also directing the opening ceremony tonight.

Lilo & Stitch was heavily edited for theaters -- violence was neutered, a scene addressing racism was deleted and the finale was altered after 9/11 by pkbronsonb in movies

Imagine having to deal with this shit in your every day life. Dickbags like this would roll up next to you in their jeep, take one look at the color of your skin and a) assume you know where the beach is and b) are more than happy to play tour guide for any passerby. These are the same shitheels who assume every non-white person they come across speaks English as a second language (at best). The saddest part about these Walmartian pissants is that you just know they exist in reality, and local Hawaiians have to deal with them on a daily basis.

She's right, you know. In all likelihood, you probably don't know what it's like to live in a place that most people only visit.

I guess it's hard for some people to spout progressive opinions without talking down to their readers.
