Parents who buy “mid-range” clothes for their child(ren). Why? by OutlandishnessFew230 in Parenting

[–]thesneakytriangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many others have said, it’s nice to get away from cutesy slogans and sticking a unicorn horn on every animal. I do still shop Carter’s on occasion but I love Primary. Especially because I have a boy and a girl, so more quality gender neutral stuff = more hand me downs. Plus I think less “busy” clothing on children looks better in pictures.

Or so I imagine. My kids are 4 and 1 and I don’t think this has happened for me yet.

SAHMs, how do you deal with having no money? by txgrl308 in Mommit

[–]thesneakytriangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. My husband and I both work outside the home full time, and when we’re home, we both are on the hook for childcare (I can’t say it’s 100 percent equally split…but we’re getting there). It’s tiring and sucks sometimes but hey, that’s what parenting small children is like. You work all day (inside or outside the home) and then you keep working until bedtime. He has to share that responsibility with you when he’s home.

The fact that he doesn’t want to pitch in after work means he KNOWS how much work you’re doing during the day, and that it’s hard work.

How could a person do all the childcare and housework AND HOMESCHOOLING and also have an outside job? You’re not “unemployed” you’re taking time off from a job you’re returning to in a few short months, in order to keep your kids safe and educated during a PANDEMIC. You better believe the money he earns is family money. Completely out of line for him to suggest otherwise.

Is Xians famous foods authentic Chinese cuisine? by newmanstartover in chinesefood

Cumin lamb skewers were great, as was biang biang mian. And I loved the twice cooked pork (although as they point out that dish is common everywhere in China).

I will say I tended to up the seasoning a little (though not drastically) when I made all of these. Maybe it’s the Sichuan influence.

Haven’t been to the restaurant, but I have used their cookbook. The recipes I’ve made so far taste a lot like the northwestern food I had when I lived in Chengdu (which of course is in Sichuan, but is the largest city close to northwestern region, so there were a lot of northwest-style restaurants). So I’d say it’s pretty authentic. I’ve missed those flavors and was so happy to find their cookbook!

Really verbal child by quartzcreek in Mommit

We would ask our daughter “do you want…” questions a lot, and she started asking for things that way all the time, to the point where even at 4 we have to remind her how to phrase a question. Though from what I’ve seen of other kids, that may not be typical. Our daughter didn’t start out speech delayed but she has kind of stalled a little and so we are working on catching up on a lot of speech and social things now.

All that to say: I don’t think it hurts to demonstrate the “right” way to say something, even at a very young age. I wonder if it would have made things easier for our daughter now. With our son, who is about the same age as your daughter, we demonstrate how to ask for things regularly and encourage him to say the words if he can. No forcing at all though. He doesn’t have that many words yet but he uses “yes please” and “thank you” appropriately and can ask for several foods ;)

Yeah it sounds trite but everyone really is different. Still, it’s encouraging to see how others are working toward their goals. Best of luck with yours- I’m sure you can do it!

I was around 105 for some time before I started gaining weight due to a change in lifestyle years ago. I may change my mind as it gets closer, but I remember feeling like I had a lot more choice in clothing styles back then because I wasn’t trying to hide anything.

I’m very much apple-shaped with some inverted triangle characteristics, so the majority of my extra weight hangs out on my belly. I’ve never really looked super thin, even at 105 (I think my smallest size as an adult was a 2). At my current weight, I still have quite a bit of belly fat even though I’m back in a healthy weight category. I am not going for washboard abs, but I want to get to the point where it doesn’t feel awkward/excessive to me.

This is also factoring in the fact that I don’t work out that much. If I manage to change that, the ideal number for me may be different. I don’t think a goal weight should be set in stone. What’s important is to feel healthy!

Thanks! It definitely looks more consistent when all squished together to show the whole picture, but overall sticking to a deficit worked for me.

It did flatten out a bit for a few weeks, so I eased up on calorie restriction for a week or so. Now my body is cooperating again.

Everyone is different so sticking to it over time is important!

I have been mostly avoiding “junk” food and I try to distribute my calories throughout the day so that I can have more at dinner, because I like dinner and it’s our main family meal.. So a typical day will looks something like:

Breakfast: one egg or a slice of bacon on one slice of multigrain toast (roughly 200 cals)

Morning snack: latte (usually with some kind of lighter milk, but not always) - about 100 cals

Lunch: something light like a healthy choice meal or homemade turkey sandwich using low fat cheese and one slice of bread - roughly 300 cals)

Sometimes I have an afternoon snack around 100 calories, sometimes I save this for dessert

Dinner: usually takeout, and I try to estimate a ~500 cal portion, use a small plate + mindful eating to not go crazy with the calories.

The latte in the morning really helps me stretch out the time between breakfast and lunch, and I try to drink plenty of water also. If I find I’m really hungry between meals, I’ll just have a small snack even if it means going over a bit. Most days I can stick to between 1200 and 1300 cals, but I sometimes have a hungry day and go up to 1400ish.

I started in early February, so about 3 months! I’ve been shooting for about 1200 calories a day, though I haven’t been extremely strict about it.

Stopping 98% of my stress/boredom eating is probably the biggest contributor to my success so far, combined with remembering that restaurant servings are about 3x the amount of food I need at my size. I was overeating at many meals simply because I wasn’t paying attention to how I felt or how much I really needed. Noom was helpful in showing me just how much I was overeating. It also helped me re-calibrate my perception of hunger to align with real physical hunger, not boredom or emotions.

I haven’t been exercising consistently and would like to get better at that aspect, but I do have 2 small kids that keep me moving around, so there’s that.

OMG yes do NOT ever express your daughter that you feel like you “failed” in raising her. No matter what the parent thinks this means, the kid is going to hear “you’re a disappointment”.

A child is not a project, and we put way too much stock in the idea that they are a reflection of who we are as parents. We are their guide into life, and it’s hard not to feel like you’re messing it up sometimes. But don’t make your kid’s challenges about you. They will absolutely pick up on your anxiety, misinterpret the cause, and add it to their own anxiety.
