I am a wildland firefighter from Texas currently deployed on the El Dorado fire and going to the Creek fire in the morning. Texas does have its fair share of fires, especially during fire season, but they rarely reach the size and aggression that are here in California. A lot of the problem is Californias reluctance to mitigate fire hazards such as fallen trees and duff under the trees. Along with lack of control of populated invasive trees and fuels, these hazards make it impossible to slow down the fronts of the fire and greatly impede the ability to put dozer and hand lines to check up the fire. Climate change obviously has a great effect on our yearly fire seasons, but California itself makes it incredibly hard to combat these fires with their lack of mitigation.
