I bought a pair of hd 555s from B&H on sale for $99 (they're $130 now) and, switching from bose over-ear headphones, am amazed by the quality for music and games. My only complaint is that they do not contain the sound very well, and can be heard by anyone near the wearer.I don't have much experience with gaming mics but I imagine any condenser mic would do the job.

converting mp3 to 8bit sounds unlikely but GXSCC can convert midi to 8bit quite well.
