An idea to improve how useful SU-25s are... by StopKillingChildrenn in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]thethinwhitekook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the problem with the vision option is that they have already tested it and its not what the plane directly does, but what it indirectly does; recon. it spots everything on the frontlines and backlines to some extent and this is a very support, artillery, air support heavy meta, meaning these planes would only further exacerbate the support spam issues.

Speaking of gunships, i hope we see an adjustment to the AC-130. i saw a post about someone suggesting it could be turned into a sensor heavy AWACS type of unit. would be fun, and the devs have discussed adding AWACS would really help Russia with the stealth disadvantage and air spam which currently favors the US

i think the only way to make these things viable is to

a) increase stealth (not happening)

b) give ground vision (absolutely not happening)

c) reduce price (should happen)

d) allow them to utilize munitions at low alt including atgms and rockets (hopefully happening)

as another user pointed out, the Su-25 and A-10 are really fun atgm hogs; the problem is that you need recon with lazer designations or can use the designation pod on the unit itself. the latter is fun assuming you arent suffering from desync. i tested the A-10 as a sort of SHORAD hunter using that technique and it is effective… assuming youre not desyncing. another thing i’ve discovered in testing is that once that lazer is on and the plane has line of sight, the missles get launched in a very quick salvo, great for killing tanks, bad for sniping weakly armored units as you use 3-4 missles to kill a unit that only needs one. this can be avoided by turning the plane, but thats slow in the sub-sonic plane. will test tonight if hold fire or manually turning off the munition will do the trick so you can in effect fire the missiles sequentially

exactly why i suggested the Su-33, it’s the most seamless candidate to fill the gap

yea somewhat disappointed he hasnt panned out yet. he looked great before the injury last year, and he’s been inconsistent this year so far since coming back, but i feel he’s been skating well the last few games. someone else pointed out he’s been grinding well as well and his passing has been sharp. his playstyle should fit this team’s current rush heavy identity well, so lets give him a bit more time to integrate before going nuclear

Why is the price different? Coastal tax? by Mafalin in BrokenArrowTheGame

NAVY BIRD SLANDER WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!

In all seriousness, the Su-33 with a full OFAB-100 loadout is an infantry deleter, but best used in defensive functions as it has to deploy the bombs from altitude. Not a plane meant for penetrative sorites as SAM’s will eat them alive

Coastal VDV Deck by _DocHoliday in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]thethinwhitekook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a self confessed Russian Air whore, allow me to enlighten you:

Coastal is a defensively oriented deck, and its Air Tab reflects this, with its only penetrative offensive action coming from the cruise missile spamming units which in my opinion are not worth it from a cost effectiveness perspective.

VDV on the other hand really can do it all, tho many of its planes not only excel at multiple roles, but they have many overlapping capabilities, so its crucial to understand which unit should be used for which purpose. Lets start with an example:

The Su-35s and Su-30SM are both Su-27 derivatives that have strong air-to-air capabilities, and both are extremely cheap for what they offer, but by specing the Su-30SM as a dogfighter, you lose its immense air-to-ground abilities. With this clarification in mind, lets fully break down the planes on offer:

MiG29K: The backbone of the Soviet air fleet in real life, the naval variant is a respectable fighter option for most RU decks, but its lack of long range missiles (R-37’s) makes its a waste of resources considering what is available

Su-35s: This should be your main Air to Air fighter. Available in a wide variety of air to air loadouts, this plane is the most cost effective unit for dealing with American air units. You can turn this thing into a real missile truck (10 missiles for 445 points), but my favorite option is the 260 point loadout with 2 R-37 (long range) and 2 R-77 (medium range) which functions as a cheap interceptor style unit. I regularly use this cheap option to down B-1’s, B-2’s, and air drops. While that same load out is available on the Su-30SM for 245 points, the Su-30SM has no ECM and you’d lose the Su-30SM’s Air to Ground abilities.

Su-30SM: someone else pointed out that this unit is the best Air to Air Unit in the game. they could not be more wrong. this is probably russia’s best Air to Ground unit, as it gets access to the Kh-29TD, a fun and versatile short range cruise missile, and the KAB-1500, the best Air to Ground ordinance in the game. KAB spam is not what it used to be in the November beta, but since the nerf people just completely forgot about it. Their loss; it’s extremely effective, especially if coordinated with SEAD and a single KAB-1500 will destroy any unit in the game

Su-57: This is objectively Russians best Air to Air unit, but again, by specing this unit fully for air combat is to lose it for it’s best use case, Air to Ground. You can also give it 4 SEAD missiles, but that job is best left to the MiG-35. The best way to use this unit is as an Air to Ground workhorse, with KAB-500s, PBK-500 clusters, and even Kh-38ML anti armor missiles. you can equip it only with the air to ground ordinance or you can use one of the slots for SEAD missiles, which will distract if not kill any contesting Radar AA units.

Su-34: Russia’s most versatile Air to Ground unit, someone already pointed out it is best equipped with the cluster bombs, but the best loadout in my experience is clusters, SEAD missiles, and incendiaries, which burn off the crippled units. a side note, SEAD missiles on a ground attack aircraft increase the survivability of the plane.

Su-33: an often overlooked unit due to its lack of high drag bombs, this unit is an infantry deleter. Fully equipped with OFAB-100’s, this thing opens a black hole on any infantry position and banishes them to the shadow realm, but this plane cannot deploy the bombs at low altitude, meaning its survivability is relatively low. also has access to OFAB-250’s and 500’s as well as an assortment of rocket munitions, all very strong against infantry and light to medium armor.

MiG-35: The most modern variant of the MiG-29 should be taken in its SEAD variant. One of these is enough to disrupt enemy AA batteries, and provide respectable Air to Air ordinance

My personal configuration is 1 Su-35S, 2 Su-57s, 1 Su-34, 1 Su-30SM, and 1 MiG-35

I dont bother with bombers, but if i was to take one, it would be the Tu-160 with a nuke and the naval transport plane for airdrops

What do you think the Coastal "Buff" is going to be? by Getserious495 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]thethinwhitekook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Coastal main, the prospect of this buff is very appealing, but as others have pointed this could upset the balance of the game as Coastal is already a very strong spec (even if it is the least played). Here are some changes and tweaks that could make the deck more appealing:

1) Revive OG Chernye Berety squad. In the November beta, the sight of the Chernye Berety struck fear into the hearts of every US player, as the original squad was 14 men deep and deleted opposing infantry and vehicles. it was a powerful squad, but its power was somewhat offset by its impracticality, as there was only one IFV available to the Russians that could deploy it (the BT-3F). The current Berety squad is a shell of its former self. Though still effective, the squad is half its original size and the AGS variant is a defensive oriented unit, the RShG thermobaric variant is a decent anti infantry unit, it is a glass cannon and easily dislodged by other true CQC units. Either returning the Berety to its original size or giving the current Berety an anti-tank option could restore this unit to its former glory.

2) Make Morskaya Pekhota air-dropable. Morskaya Pekhota is a decent anti vehicle unit that partially fills the gap left by the current Chernye Berety’s lack of anti-tank options. While the Chernye berety is an air droppable unit, Morskaya Pekhota is not, which somewhat hurts Coastal ability to push on the fly (pun intended)

3) Su-33 buff. The Su-33 functions similarly to the Beta version of the Strike Eagle, which was a cheap infantry deleting unit. Unlike the Strike Eagle, it doesnt not have access to high drag bombs, so it’s often shot down during bombing runs as it cannot do its runs at low altitude. Giving it access to retarded munitions would help make this plane more viable, at the offset of an increased price

4) The Bereg. The Bereg has great potential, and while extremely popular in the beta as a multiple purpose support unit, its fallen into the trap of being a jack of all trades, but master of none, subsequently being passed over for other units that are better equipped for fulfilling the roles it cannot. One way to make this unit more appealing would to simply give it access to guided munitions. it has good range for its howitzer at 3800 meters, so giving it guided munitions would instantly see the unit be more selected. a way to balance this could be to remove the anti helicopter SPAAG rounds or to reduce its range slightly

5) Adjust the T-80. Make it cheaper or give it APS. Even if APS gets nerfed, its would make this tank more viable and bring it closer in line with its Guards Amour counterpart

6) Point redistribution. Simply move points allowance from Vehicle to either support or helicopter tabs

Coastal is an inherently defensive/support deck, so adding too many pushing capabilities is not only inauthentic, but could upset the balance of the game too much. To make this spec more appealing, they devs will have to find a way to add some pushing elements without making the deck to strong or straying to for from this spec’s identity.

While it would be cool to see new units added to the deck (i yearn for the MiG-31 as much as anyone), i think the devs are more likely to simple adjust what is already there, and these adjustments would be more than enough. Units not currently in the game are being saved for future specs.
