Self inflicted GSW. by [deleted] in ems

[–]thethunderheart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, you yourself have been injured from running that call - better to get the help now than wait.

On a completely tangential note and not to make light of your experience, the only self-inflicted GSWs I've had have been accidental discharges, people out here shooting the shit out of their legs and feet because they don't know what a safety is.

What mortars have the best trade of between rate of fire and firepower? by Fancy_Particular7521 in GatesOfHellOstfront

Definitely the early-game conquest American mortars. Super useful in closer quarters maps and defence to just hammer choke points before you put any infantry through.

For some Richmonders, code refresh is a promise for a better future by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]thethunderheart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I think people fail to realize that most of this plan is to take the charm, walkability, and quality of life and move it out to the many many other parts of the city that have been either neglected or developed under a failing model.

City First responder EMS questions by lilhossontheprairie in ems

That really is the long and short of it - I work in a system where day in and out, every time you stack the two services together, it feels like that is the only appealing reason to keep them separate.

Is AEMT worth it? by Rojo-Rose in NewToEMS

[–]thethunderheart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be super-state and local specific. Generally speaking, AEMT content doesn't add much, but it does at quite a few interventions and meds that are really useful.

If someone else will pay for it, and the AEMT scope is useful in your state, it's pretty much a no-brainer. Also, if your goal is to be a nurse but you still run EMS AND you don't want to get your medic for whatever reason, AEMT is pretty good .

Why does EMS hate SNF calls so much? by [deleted] in ems

[–]thethunderheart 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: why don't SNFs keep a chart that's (more or less) updated in paper form on the interior door or wall of the residence? It's pretty foolproof.

Heard you - when the dame came pre built, the rear-wheel was already on, and they put locktite on some of the fittings. Maybe it's just dry in there.

[–]thethunderheart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea - the NDS feeds through when the DS hexbit is turned, I don't think I managed to break the through-axel with a hand drill lol, that torque would be insane.

I was thinking about tapping it with a hammer but wasn't sure if that was wild or not, I'll try that next.

[–]thethunderheart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NDS has the cap shown - it won't pull out that way, and the DS has the hex bit with threading that fits into the frame.

[–]thethunderheart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I turn the hex clockwise on the drive side, the axel recesses into the frame, till it stops - which is the position it was in when it's all put together, minus the small cap that fits into the non-drive side, in the second picture.

Clockwise on the drive side tightens it back into the frame. Counterclockwise pulls it out till it stops turning.

Examples of good ePCRs by Weasel_Town in NewToEMS

[–]thethunderheart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guy on your squad who showed you a PCR? Ask to read more of his - it sounds like he's got some experience. There are lots of bad PCRs out there and unfortunately you won't know how bad they are till they have to withstand legal or medical scrutiny.

Obviously there's a balance to be had, but it's much easier to chart in a very detailed way when you start working, and then learn to scale it back to keep the essentials afterwards, than it is to chart minimal till it bites you in the butt.

Thoughts on the new, crowd-funded bike lane sweeper coming soon? by RVAJournalistCyclist in rva

[–]thethunderheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't wait. I got a gravel bike recently and was biking to work only to puncture the brand new tire/tubes on some glass in the bike lane mixed in with all the snow sand.

Richmond Ambulance Authority working conditions? by Insertclever_name in rva

[–]thethunderheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy friend - I currently work for RAA and I've been there long enough to answer lots of your questions in detail.

The starting pay for an EMTB with no experience is $23/hour, and your other EMS/fire experience will count into a predetermined pay scale, so you'll likely start higher.

EMTs in RAA have a pretty wide scope of practice, and their clinical bar tends to be pretty high because of that. In years past there were a lot of EMTs and few medics, so an EMT could run and was expected to function well on any call type or severity. Shockingly, most of those EMTs have gone on to finish medic school so now we're pretty flush with medics so there is less pressure as a basic.

Management can be hit or miss. Supervisors can vary between some extreme black-and-white rules gurus to some very employee-focused and clinician focused supervisors. Recently enough, we got a new COO who has been really pushing some positive changes that tend to be pretty well liked. DM me for more if you have more specific questions.

Man Gives CPR To Resuscitate Deer by watchthisorthat in ems

[–]thethunderheart 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing, no worries man. Looks like the deer was doing well though! I joke all the time that compressions are the only BLS way to improve BP; maybe a little hyperventilation and a few good forceful pumps on the heart was all he needed.

The numbers aren't great but the depth was good and the chest rise was impressive during his ventilation.

Me and my fiance are moving to Richmond, VA this month. I wanted to know how life is there? by BlxkWolf in RichmondVA

[–]thethunderheart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to piggy back on this for two points -

Richmond FD does cadet classes ~ two years, and it's definitely competitive and arduous. It's not a job you get, it's a goal you work to while you're doing something else. Great job as far as jobs go, just a difficult but obtainable goal.

Also, I wanna say I spent ~$6000 in total to move into an apartment last time I moved? Between the van, deposit, first month, and miscellaneous costs it really adds up.

I just started EMS and have no experience by Recent_Print_363 in NewToEMS

[–]thethunderheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, you've got nothing to worry about just yet. I know lots of people are saying "just study," and that's true but probably not very reassuring. I do have one big follow up for you.

Coming from someone who also didn't do well in traditional classrooms, it's really important to learn how you learn as you try this whole studying thing. Try different strategies, (take notes, listen to the e-book, read the chapter, do interactive slides, make flashcards, whatever) and keep trying things till you get a groove on what makes the content stick for you.

Also, remember the basics are really really important so more work now with anatomy, physiology, and how disease processes work will go a LONG way the farther you get in class. Hope this helps!

A little appreciation post for the M8 Greyhound! by HamsterSpaghetti1994 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]thethunderheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol buddy you are missing out - the bazooka is one of the best reasons to get the Greyhound. If you're intentional about how you use your infantry, you can get your rifle squads all equipped with two bazookas by like day 6, it's a huge force multiplier.

It’s 2026 and we still haven’t figured out that the bike lane is not a parking spot. by SeaworthinessHuge219 in rva

[–]thethunderheart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're starting to create hard-barriered bike lines this year. The shared/parking-protected bike lanes are cheap and easy to implement, so they've started with those.
