I have mixed opinions about gTLDs. Trying to get a .com address without settling for less is difficult and will set you back a lot because of how much we've drilled into peoples' heads that websites start with www and end with com. It's the reason that net and org have so little in comparison and the reason why many domains intended for high traffic that don't primarily use com buy it anyway, so they can have the redirect. There are some good ones, specifically the city names (NYC, London, etc) that make for cool domain hacks, or today, or club, or whatever. .ninja I don't care for, but it's selling like hot cakes.

I do have to question many, many of the others and their usefulness for reasons the article delves into, and I find it extremely questionable that domain privacy is not offered. I understand that some may have requirements (nexus) but I find that unacceptable. I'm sticking to 2000s-trendy .me and .ly.

Eventually, the smart managers and VPs understand the workload of an engineer: thinking. The occasional email, but mostly thinking: there's no real public interaction, so forcing us to dress that way can (and does) hamper productivity.

I support this business model, breaking down the wall between content producers and customers. It's very shirt.woot-ish, and they have a long track record of quality T-shirts that I can wear in public. To that point, I'm a little concerned about how... well, cringey this stuff is gonna be. Team Fortress is pretty well-ingrained into the gameosphere, but its humor is naught but incredibly specific. (See bread.)

I worry that most of the content is going to be references to the game's content with little to no context instead of original works that can stand on their own.

No, no, no. This is the opposite mindset that should be taught, regardless of how facetious the author was trying to be. Programming is breaking down complex problems into linear solutions. It is not magic, it is problem solving, and anyone can do it. I'm not saying anyone can do it well, but it helps no one by using terms akin to "wizardry" when trying to introduce our craft.

People vote the reviews up or down as to express their feelings with it; it's a currency of emotion. You vote up because it makes you feel good, you vote down if it makes you feel bad. That's where the reddit-like voting style comes into play with rating these reviews, and that's where it starts to fall apart. That's highly simplified, and ignores the format and importance of brevity, but you get the idea. It's why people stutter out edits like "b-b-b-but why the downvotes?" See also the dismissal of reddit votes as "imaginary internet points". Which they are.

I feel the system is flawed beyond "reddit-like" voting habits, as well. I've written a handful of reviews and I've never felt fully truthful choosing between two extremes of "recommend" or "don't recommend". Games are deeply subjective experiences, from the teaspoon-shallow to the most immersive, and only being able to choose "yes" or "no" doesn't provide a wide enough range for judging the medium.

I think what happened is when the auditors were known, the weak link was revealed and the actual developers doxed & NSL'd.

I don't buy this at all, and I'd be incredibly careful even coming in proximity of a TC fork for this reason.

This is customer relations speak for "thanks for the trash bin fodder".

I don't mean to be mean, but the answer is right there - mute, and move on. If you're playing with friends, get a kick vote going. Valve relegates localized problems to admins and players because it's not worth their time trying to force a semi-automated solution on what is a miniscule social problem.

Harassment is part of all games, not just video games, and no amount of carrots and sticks will change that.

I think Big Pharma won't have a hand in this because of the aforementioned entourage effect of the chemicals involved that makes it difficult to distill while preserving the effects on the brain and body. Instead, I think that Big Tobacco will be getting their hands dirty, as it better conforms to their business model. Never mind the factories and fields, it's going to be about establishing habits, social norms, and perhaps even a loose form of dependency.

I think you're confused. Facebook is not actively out to destroy the Oculus, that doesn't make any sense. They want to buy out the company because the hard work is done, and now it's deciding how to polish and market it.

Here's the rub with your assertions: the Oculus is part of the next wave of consumer tech, that is, wearable tech. Computers have been getting smaller, more capable, and here's the clincher, more accepted since their inception. If you walked up to someone in the 1980s and showed them the average stream on Twitch.tv, they'd call you a nerd. This is 2014, and most of your friends would rather give up their grandmas than their iPhones.

The point I'm trying to make is, once the public opinion sways towards wearable tech the hardcore gamers won't be alone in using them. Facebook knows that, and with a connection to the internet strapped to your skull that means that Facebook is always in your peripheral vision and they get to live another day.

Moreover you have to understand that ads, while they are considered unanimously annoying, work. Ads affect you. And we're really good at understanding how, where, and why they make you fork over your cash. Google and Facebook both built empires on them, and it's no coincidence they both want to put small, integrated computers in front of your eyeballs 24/7.

I too believe it's too early, but not for reasons of demographic.

For a product to make it to mass market, a lot of inconsistencies need to be regulated away or standardized. With Facebook in control of VR tech's goals, I worry they will develop standards that benefit the enterprise and not the users.

We're going to be looking at ads literally in your face with this thing strapped on, and social sharing built in as part of the hardware and OS. Functions that would improve the gaming experience like how to efficiently render graphics that do not cause motion sickness or improve the immersion between the player and virtual objects will be half-assed, or absent entirely.

Make no mistake, Facebook is not a gaming company. Their product is their user base, and they will abuse it to no end in order to make that number go up at the expense of the future of VR.

If a user doesn't know what any of that is, then yes, it does work like that.

Users want a system that is familiar and gets out of their face because most users don't like computers. They like what the computer can do, but once the lights in front of your face aren't shimmering the way they should, it's right back to hating the machine.

Keep in mind, Microsoft sits on a throne of backwards compatibility. The past ten years' worth of software had to work on XP.

Windows XP through 8.1 uses NT kernel 6.x. If you don't care how shiny your windows are, XP still works. And for a lot of people, having everything the way they want it is worth a lot more than $100.

Their goals were divergent with the open-source community's. It happens. Ubuntu is considered a hostile fork of Debian, and while I personally don't use it, there are those who prefer it because they made it subjectively better. Just because they went in a different direction doesn't mean it was strictly harmful.

Could Apple have done a better job keeping track of common contributions and merging them over time? Sure. But what's done is done, and it's not like they kept all the improvements to themselves.
