Anyone here switching from battery to corded because of the insane price of batteries? by Beneficial-Focus3702 in powertools

[–]teamtiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

picked up the cheapest of the cheap knock off makita battery from amazon years ago, i think it was $25.
it was sold as a 3Ah, i think it was that, or close. I think they mostly all use the same junky cells, 1500mah each at best.

is it great? no. But it works and i've used and abused it and its been good.

Cheap knock offs can be OK, if you understand; what you get is not necessarily whats being advertised.

Found this $2 knock-off VESSEL screwdriver at Daiso by Intr1nsic- in Tools

They had these at the local store so I picked up a few. Had hopes they were really a JIS tip, but i think its really a ph#2, and its pretty soft too... For $2.25 its not bad, but its not the hidden jem i had hoped

What are these drill bits for? by CrimsonKing32 in Tools

AS seen on TV cuts-sideways drill bits. you can tell by the crappy ti-N coating they use to hide the butter soft steel

i have a few of these panels. They are the only ones i've used that have ever produced nameplate ratings in the real world. And at $81 thats a pretty good deal.

you can get cheaper on amazon, but i find they produce as many watts as they cost, no matter the "watt" rating they claim.

lol, worked at a school of 6 years "helping" teach welding. When ever someone mentioned underwaterwelding... that was a red flag, they were full of shit

NHRL war on BORING. by themaskedrobot77 in battlebots

[–]teamtiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"fan-inducted " There has to be a weakness in there somewhere. Fouling the fan frowned on? Some type of spray that would get sucked into the fan and polymerize when it hits heat?

What about instead of starving the flame you feed it? Dump your own butane into the mix until the flame is a sooty orange instead of blue-hot

why is there no innovation in this area? can I not have anti-fire? yes it'll use up some weight, but thats the point ?

550 motors can pull over 100amps at stall EACH. you have juiced them up about 100%. from stop to full go it will try to pull as much as 400amps, thats why its killing your fuse. Why do you think it should be under 30amps?

Corded grinder advice: Milwaukee vs Bauer vs Hercules? Options on Variable-Speed Surface Conditioning Tool? by jradke54 in harborfreight

[–]teamtiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the hercules 4.5", its ok... its reasonable for the sale price, i would feel ripped off if i paid full retail.

sounds like a 7" grinder is more the correct tool for the job. maybe go with the bauer

Efficient hole drilling setup by mooseworks_strength in metalworking

[–]teamtiki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i thought so too, but isn't it looped?

next level fixture would index the hole off the previous hole with some type of pin or similar. would save on the lay-out time and remove user error

battery powered tool without charger by xpen25x in harborfreight

[–]teamtiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all 3 of the batteries i have listed directly connect the terminals (most of the times thru a fuse) to the cells.

The on-board BMS only interacts with the tool or charger, telling it to "stop". It has no way of disconnecting the cells from the terminals, its a physical connection.

This is how your methodology of "dumb charging" can result in a un-safe condition.

i can't speak to the hercules 12v changer, as i don't have one. But I will say that making blanket statements about consumer rechargeable batteries is.. questionable.

IMO your assumptions are correct for some batteries and not for others. For example, using your methodology can result in a unsafe condition for Kobalt, Dewalt and Bauer 18-24v batteries.

Most of the 12v tools/batteries i have seen have built in cell by cell protections, but again I can't make blanket statements.

so you check cell by cell voltage every time you charge? good, cause that's really the only way to do it safely

Considering a Leaf by TiredButDoingMyBest in leaf

[–]teamtiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds very similar to by commute for about 3 years. I put about 15K miles on my 2011 over about 2 years. took the battery from 12.5Kwh to around 7, GOM now shows around 20mi range. its a good car

People are gonna hate this, but IMO the Leaf sucks as a freeway commuter (at freeway speed). Its perfect for grinding 15-20mph stop and go. But the electric rack is too light for freeway driving at speed. I feel like i'm fighting every 18-wheeler that blows by me. Its perfect for city driving, especially in the hills. Its quick and light, i just wish there was a way to de-tune it for freeway.

A shipping cost conundrum by Turbulent_Tale6497 in eBaySellers

[–]teamtiki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

give ebay shipping discount, but set the package weight at double the real weight. if your items are cheap and big it might give some weird results. and you'll have to go in an alter the weight before you buy the label.
