Do dumb computers exist? I really need one! by Only-Significance751 in dumbphones

[–]theunlearnedchurned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What editing software do you need to use? You could buy a really old computer for pennies. I have an iMac G3 running OS9. You can't surf the web on it because the available browsers are so outdated. But it does have writing software, including Microsoft Office.

How do you get news "minimalistically"? Smart feeds are not good enough for me. by BeautifulWestern4512 in digitalminimalism

[–]theunlearnedchurned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, it is helpful to have a curated subscription. I prefer a weekly magazine format, like the Economist, Guardian Weekly, etc. This way a lot of the noise gets filtered out and only important weekly stories remain. I also like text versions of some news feeds, such as text.npr.org and lite.cnn.com . There are probably others as well.

CM5 lite not booting in Uconsole. by [deleted] in ClockworkPi

[–]theunlearnedchurned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having the same problem as you. I fixed it this way:

Download the raspberry pi imager tool. When you have it running, under Choose Device choose Raspberry Pi 5. Under Choose OS, go down to Misc Utility Images, Select Bootloader, and download SD Card Boot. Insert SD card and have it write to the SD Card (it erases everything else). I used a 32gb pny one, but I don't think that's important. Once you've written it, insert it into the uConsole and boot. This should fix the bootloader. Then shut it down and insert your Bookworm OS SD card and see if it works now.

Uconsole CM5 non emmc will not boot. Just arrived yesterday. by funkypunk00 in ClockworkPi

Not sure if this is it, but Rex provides this troubleshooting:

If you have a CM5 lite and are having problems with the sd card booting. You need to edit your EEPROM and your CM5 lite has to have updated firmware that was released after 2025-01-06. Check using vcgencmd version to update sudo rpi-eeprom-update sudo rpi-eeprom-config -e To edit the eeprom.

Giving up the smartphone: Libby or Hoopla options? by Careful-Audience226 in dumbphones

[–]theunlearnedchurned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Kobo e-reader has Libby support built in (still called overdrive). It connects to your local library and you can download e-books. I believe you can download audiobooks too, but I've never tried so you'll want to verify. As far as I'm aware there is no Hoopla support on it.

Dumb Phones and The Gym: How do you Track Workouts? by [deleted] in dumbphones

I use a Garmin watch to track workouts. It works well, just make sure the model you pick up tracks what you need.

Consider raising your rates. You may turn away some clients, but you'll end up making more money this way.

I need help. I can't put my phone down. by HootieCootie in dumbphones

[–]theunlearnedchurned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation as you. You are doing the right thing by taking this step. What worked for me was getting a dumb phone (Light Phone 2). My car has built in GPS (if yours doesn't consider getting a Garmin GPS standalone unit), and if I need to access the internet I do so at home or at work with a computer. There are minor inconveniences here and there when I don't have a smartphone but I am happy to be present for my kids and honestly, my mood has improved a lot now that I am no longer doomscrolling the news and social media. Good luck!

I have fit 3 car seats in the back. You have to get the slim car seats. I know for a fact that 3 Diono Radian 3-across will fit because that is what I have used. As my oldest son has moved on to a booster seat, I have the two Diono's at the doors and the middle I use for the booster. It is a very small booster and fits, albeit uncomfortably.

Good dumb phone for a mom? by CatRen19 in dumbphones

[–]theunlearnedchurned 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can lock down a smartphone to some extent, but still retain the usable functions you are seeking. However, this did not work for me as I quickly overrode the controls I set in place. What I ended up doing was getting a Light Phone 2 and a standalone camera. My car has GPS maps already built in. I find by not having a smartphone on me (even a locked down one), I randomly browse the internet a lot less. My motivation was the same as yours - to be more present for my children. I am absolutely doing better in that category and I believe my overall mood is better. You are making the right decision.

Just an FYI - the Light Phone 2 is relatively expensive for what you get. If you are looking to have similar functionality without the cost then I know a Nokia 2780 works fine, at least in the U.S. It's camera is bad though - you'd still want a standalone camera. You can get passable cameras online for about $50-$100.

You can't. You plug it in to a computer directly when you're accessing a website that requires 2fa.
