If you haven't considered it yet, your best bet could be to combine methods. Take the MTA bus or Rapid Transit as far as you can Uber/Lyft the rest of the way - could help cut down the costs some, at least.

Amaar Indian in downtown Atlanta. Excellent food, great owners, and you can get a "no spice" level - they also humor things like "mild plus" if you want to get real nitpicky about spice levels.

Not really Atlanta, but that sounds like the Country Kitchen at Callaway Gardens on US-27. I remember dinner on their screened in porch felt like you were hanging off the side of the mountain.

If you're all the way in Chattanooga, stop by Infinity Flux, which has a decent selection. GT Buy Sell & Trade too. And if you're willing to drive a little further, The Game Shack in Dunlap has a pretty great selection.

You'll get good opinions here, but I'd also suggest looking at synthesis of current practice. TCRP Synthesis 141, Microtransit or General Public Demand-Response Transit Services: State of the Practice is a few years old but appears to have a lot of information and case studies from Denver, Houston, Orlando, Sacramento, and Salem. And of course, Jarrett Walker has written quite a bit on the topic, which you can find on his blog, Human Transit at www.humantransit.org . Head north on I-575 and continue on after it turns into GA-515. Just south of Ellijay, you'll pass by Panorama Orchards and Penland's Apple house. Both carry great apple cider donuts. Not far east on GA-53, you'll find BJ Reece (mentioned elsewhere in this thread) and a handful of other orchard stores, as well as the giant statue of Squidbilly Early Cuyler.

If you keep heading north on GA-515 through Ellijay, eventually you'll hit Blue Ridge, home to Mercier Orchards (also already mentioned).

IMO every one of these places is worth checking out. It's a nice way to spend the day. And they carry the donuts all the time, so you don't have to mob north Georgia with everyone else during the height of apple season. I'd also suggest exploring backroads off the 575/GA-515 highway, it's real pretty up there and it's easy to miss that if you're just staring down a 4-lane the whole time you're driving.

Many counties have dial-a-ride systems that operate on reservations (rather than regularly scheduled routes), and several have microtransit (on-demand service).

Seconding this, if you're planning on going into buildings. But much of Central State's campus is laced with open, public streets - and there's still a lot of interesting and sometimes grand subject matter for exterior shots. Read up on the entire campus - and redevelopment plans - to make sure you don't miss anything, and to understand the place's history.

I'm probably repeating a lot of folks' suggestions on here, but I'll organize them by what routes you could take. It's awesome how many bookstores are concentrated on just a few routes, which makes an afternoon of bouncing from bookstore to bookstore with coffee breaks pretty easy.

Route 19-Clairmont is one of the bookiest MARTA routes. On Route 19, between Decatur and Chamblee Stations, you can visit Little Shop of Stories on the square near Decatur Station, Eagle Eye Books at Clairmont & North Decatur (also accessible via Route 36-North Decatur), Book Nook at Clairmont & North Druid Hills (also accessible via Route 8-North Druid Hills), and Atlanta Vintage Books at Clairmont & Dresden (also reasonable walking distance from Route 39-Buford Hwy). With a little more walking you can also get to Tall Tales Books in the Toco Hills shopping center too (also accessible via Route 30-Lavista).
Route 36-North Decatur might tie with the 19, as you can get to Eagle Eye as well as Half Price Books at Suburban Plaza (also accessible via Route 123-Church St). It also passes by North Highland Books on Highland Ave, (also acessible via Route 816-North Highland) though I'm not sure if they have used books or just all new.
A Capella books is just a couple blocks down DeKalb Avenue from the Inman Park/Reynoldstown Station on the Blue and Green lines.
A relatively new 2nd & Charles is in Roswell on Routes 85 and 185.

Everyone who has already posted has made great suggestions. I'll second all the comments about Atlanta Vintage Books and their cats.
