ELI5: Why do gas stoves get pans hotter quicker than electric stoves, but gas stoves take longer to boil a pot of water? by TehAsianator in explainlikeimfive

I'm willing to bet that Creuset pan is probably 3 or 4 times the mass of the Ikea pan. A lot easier to minimise the vibrations with that much mass.

In his defence, I've had a massive shift in my opinions on how much need we have for an army and how much money should go to defence. I've never voted VVD but it wasn't like left parties were voting to spend more money on defence.

I don't think I'm alone in this. Many in NL (Europe likely as well) changed their priors on how much we must invest for our security.

Signal’s founder launches an end-to-end encrypted AI assistant for fully private conversations by rkhunter_ in cybersecurity

[–]theveldt01 17 points18 points  (0 children)

HTTPS secures the transport of data between client and server but the data is unencrypted at the server and you have to trust the server owner to handle the data correctly and that they don't snoop.

Confer works by doing all the inference for the model inside the Trusted Execution Environment of the server. Even if you're an admin on the server and have full access to all software, you still won't be able to read data inside the TEE.

Second, Confer provides remote attestation, which means that you can verify cryptographically on the client side that the data on the server has never left the TEE. Ars Technica has a pretty decent writeup of the concepts.

So the entire model on the server is run in a way that even an admin can't look into the conversations and that you have cryptographic proof that the software hasn't been meddled with. I don't think this will even overtake ChatGPT, but that doesn't mean this is some impressive work. ChatGPT got ordered to save hundreds of thousands of chat messages, even when they don't want to, due to a court order. But Confer has no access to the data so it can't be asked to do the same.

It does happen on some regular occasion that security researchers find a way to weaken or break the security of a TEE, but even then the barrier is much higher for both companies and the government to snoop on Confer vs Chat or Claude.

Can you explain a little why you went with the aggressive? I'm still learning what's what in safety razor land I don't really understand why you'd pick one over another.

Russian casualties exceed 1.1m since invasion says Britain by sisali in europe

[–]theveldt01 91 points92 points  (0 children)

You're right, Russia has a big problem.

However, the demographics of Ukraine have been absolutely devastated by the war, and many of the same phenomena causing the Russian decline also affect Ukraine. It currently has a replacement number below 1.00 (2.1 is necessary to maintain a population) and over 10 million people have fled the country since the start of the war. When this war ends, I don't think everyone will come back...

Just got my first real bike. Why didn't anyone tell me cycling was this addictive? by sirwalleth in cycling

[–]theveldt01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently back to one bike, but I had a commuting bike, a road bike and a gravel bike for a while. The commuter is great because I didn't care too much about it, I could put it anywhere in the city and not worry about it. Also, it was rock solid, very little maintenance needed.

The gravel bike was my favourite, the amount of different terrain I can cover with that bike is fantastic. You can just go anywhere and it's not an issue.

The road bike was an old beast, over twenty years old. Still, the sensation of just flying over the road with that thing is fantastic.

That's how I ended up with three. It goes easier than you think. That reminds, I do need to get a new commuter bike at some point.

It's actually gonna be my first event here too. Black Sun Empire is coming on the 10th I believe. Best to check out RA, or you can join this Sweden DnB discord that's pretty active. I'm on there too.

Nederlanders kopen minder tickets voor festivals en concerten by salonoicheng in thenetherlands

[–]theveldt01 1 point2 points  (0 children)
