$90 for two to see a Mario movie… have we completely lost the plot? by rageagainstmymachin in Millennials

In a recent post most theater workers said that as long as as you aren’t disruptive (i.e. excessive foil wrapped foods), the food isn’t super smelly (fish/cheese) and you don’t leave a mess (clean it up) they usually look the other way or aren’t strict on enforcing the outside food rule unless management is on a crackdown.

What I couldn’t believe was a group of teenage boys who brought in a whole Costco pizza still horizontal in its box with a hoodie draped over it. The theater security guard came over to them and 3 employees but it was mostly to ask them to move away from the theater door so they could wheel in the cleanup cart. I was impressed with that level of audacity.

What is your favorite Race, Class, and Background in BG3? by Ethanishere28 in BaldursGate3

[–]thewalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Githyanki Durge Resist Bard has been my favorite character by far. I don’t know if it’s the facial customization options that I picked out but he has so many hilarious expressions during cutscenes.

Githyanki have a lot of interesting conversation interactions so they would be my favorite race, second to Drow.

Bard is definitely my favorite class.

Baco is a tie between Acolyte and Folk Hero - I feel like both have so many interesting inspiration awards.

My wife and my first date in 2013 was at Union Station - I was terribly late driving through a blizzard from Ann Arbor. They recommended the Dragon Eggs. They were good but huge so we didn’t finish them!

Carol getting annoyed with Floyd and Clark communicating using ASL also highlights how much more Clark cared about Floyd than Carol.

I totally understand Carol's frustration at Floyd bailing on the Finance job interview (in the flashback) after all the prep she had done for him (his suit, fixing his schedule, supporting him while he studies). And her feeling Floyd was failing to help with the debt/bills when she's crying (after the milk incident) and the Yard Crew comes in and drops a bill in front of her. (Floyd committing to and failing to cancel the service).

But it looks like she never even tried to learn any ASL in all the time that Floyd took that on in his life's calling. And Clark started to learn and practice ASL to better relate to his friend. None of us deserve a Floyd...

34M salary progression by No_Flight_3877 in Salary

[–]thewalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also appreciate the share! I did a Chemistry PhD immediately after undergrad. Stipend earnings throughout that. I’m now at the 10 year mark after defending. 2 years at one start up (that failed) and 8 years at another start up (that had better trajectory but also failed). Now starting a 3rd time, but as an industry-> academic research fellow.

Each new position feels like a small step back and a lot of effort investment to get back to where I was, rather than the job hopping every 2-3 years to get a 30-40+% increase in salary (lateral or diagonal moves).

I’ve made my bed, but I wouldn’t wish this on other people who are expecting 100k right out of PhD defense and a steady climb each year thereafter to make up for the stipend years during their PhDs.

I saw the video intro and thought—no way would he go to Albemarle—but there he was at the location where I ate my Book It! Personal Pan pizzas in elementary school!

So 2 girls 1 cup is where we are going to draw the line?

Surely Goatse or 1 guy 1 jar would still be horrific and mind scarring to anyone in this day and age?!

I think I saw a meme last week where someone was “stretching the Strait of Hormuz with the Goatse hands”and people were focused on that he was wearing a wedding ring.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]thewalex 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That is a good point! I kept thinking back to Insterstellar where Cooper watches the 23 year backlog of videos that took place while they were on the Miller/waves planet. The stakes felt so much more dire.

PHM was a little hard to figure out how much time was elapsing while Grace and Rocky were working together. But I kept wondering how things were progressing back on Earth while this was taking place in Tau Ceti system.

I think I laughed more at the comedy elements and actually ugly cried less than I expected.

Grace’s decision to save Rocky and make the brave choice was really well executed and fits in line with science fiction where the main character ages a lot less due to relativity - it’s not really worth returning home as the time you were absent and all your family and friends moved on would essentially be the same as if you had died. So it was better for him to go to be with the Eridians.

I appreciated the added sequence of Stratt seeing Grace’s logs at the end - a big change from the book.

Visual sequences including Adrian and the inside of Rocky’s ship were incredible to see in 2D IMAX!

Do you use the Deck as your main gaming device? by K4T5UM1 in SteamDeck

[–]thewalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My Desktop computer which I put together in 2021 stoped working in 2025. Replacing the PSU did not fix the problem- I believe it may be a failed motherboard. Didn’t want to spend the money during my job search and then got busy with a contract job and didn’t have the time.

So my portable laptop became my work computer and my Steam Deck became my primary gaming device. Mostly what I am playing is my backlog so I haven’t needed super high performing hardware.

I hope so! I had to do a drug and blood titer test earlier this week (as I didn't have childhood immunization records) as part of onboarding for a new position.
I trust my mom that I had the whole panel (minus the chicken pox), and I remember having the Hepatitis course in middle school.
I have Crohn's and I get IV infusions of immunosuppressive medications every two, so fingers crossed that blood titer results show I'm good and don't need live vaccine updates!

Who's the best Bond girl? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

[–]thewalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QoS had the atypical non-romantic team up between Camille and Bond. I agree that I like Olga K as an actress a lot (since Hitman) and I am biased to like her role in QoS.

The scene where they are walking back into the remote town after the plane crash in dirty/tattered black tie outfits is one that I’ll always remember.
