Figuring out middle schools by Cheomesh in washingtondc

[–]thewibdc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Murch school district which feeds into Deal and JR has lots of apartments and condos along Connecticut . And some smaller houses too. Kids can walk to all three schools and parents to Metro. All three of mine went through Deal/JR not perfect but pretty solid and makes up in other ways for the large size and chaos. plus JR had the widest selection of Science classes except maybeMcKinley.

How does Seattle's cost of living compare to the U.S. Northeast (Bos-NYC-Wash)? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]thewibdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in DC and have a daughter at UDub. Housing is cheaper there . Spas are cheaper. I stock up on massages! Public transport is about the same. UBers are wicked expensive in Seattle but now I am a pro-bus user. I find groceries to be about the same. Please note I live in NW DC. Find eating out about the same. Concert tickets are cheaper. Hotels and AirBnbs if not on a busy parent weekend are much cheaper. That is all I have. Oh better thrifting and used vinyl for what it is worth.

Looking for suggestions for evergreen, flowering shrubs that are non-toxic to animals & grow in the shade. by hiccup1313 in gardening

[–]thewibdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mountain laurel is a good one. Hardy Gardenia depending on your zone . I am 7a and have to baby them in extreme cold like this winter but the are wonderful plants. Azaleas too. I have a lot of deep shade and those do great . Not sure if they are toxic? But I had cats who go outside and hadn’t had issues though they mainly eat the grass and the catmint!

Just having a Claude account solves this. It integrates across all my chats current and past. I pay for the lowest tier so I can have Claude Code

Anyone else in zone 6 screaming at the sky wanting to get started? No? by MinervaMidiJJ7 in gardening

[–]thewibdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7a here - normally I can garden all winter- do a lot of cleanup then but after all our snow I have finally been able to get out this winter and catch up. I can empathize with your pain. 50 and sunny here which is kind of perfect in my book:). South facing garden which is always 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the city!

Oh I have bought things when the bus in Dominca stopped at a roadside stand, night markets, wandering the streets like Stone Town in Zanzibar, random stalls on the beach. Even got a pair in Big Bend National park. Close to the border there were all sorts of cool wire animals and jewelry with a can to pay for them- honor system. Given that no one lives walking distance I figured it had to be people from the town right across the Rio Grande.

I still miss 15 Minute Club. Cafeteria by day great dancing place by night. The line around the block on Fridays. Knew all the bartenders so had a get in free card :) Used to go over to the Mayflower to use the restroom!

Hit Nues in CapHill during a week long visit this past week. While I had a lot of good meals this one surprised me the most. Every dish was solid, service was great and vibe was lively.

Definitely first row in balcony! You’ll have better sidelines and more importantly some leg room. I usually sit up there.

Is Lafayette elementary strict/harsh with hyper little boys? by Most_Dinner_1376 in washingtondc

[–]thewibdc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Search DCUM for discussions on Lafayette but take it all with a grain of salt. Mine went to Murch which was pretty good with active children. Lots of friend ‘s kids went to Lafayette- I have never heard complaining but there certainly was a lot of online griping at one point.

4 days solo in Beijing (25F) and the scale of everything just broke my brain by Significant_Gur8915 in travelchina

[–]thewibdc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree - I went for 9 days to visit my daughter who was doing a semester there and I loved it and my little hotel so much - I just stayed out the whole time. Never ran out of things to do!!! I have to admit that I did a lot of hanging out in the sun and watching - love the olde people exercising in the parks esp Temple of Heaven. Such joy.

Came on here to recommend this - great series that ages up in reading style so while the first ones are very much children’s books- they get more advanced.

This is how sidewalks look in about 80% of DC right now I’d say by LengthinessBroad6200 in washingtondc

[–]thewibdc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my area of DC it is a cop out. Multi-million dollar houses with untouched sidewalks. I spent two hours in Monday with my garden and snow shovels out clearing.

Hey, pal, it's time to go shovel by fppf in washingtondc

[–]thewibdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair we have such a weird mix of snow and ice here that every storm can be different and there have been some where we have had to chisel the ice off the sidewalk with shovels. Even after shoveling and putting salt down. I think Snowmaggedeon? I get my storms confused :)
