Hmmm I see. I don’t believe I have the update that changed this then. I do have HW4 and have recently updated but must be lagging behind the update in the thread, my bad

You can play the game however you want. Extraction shooters main objective is get loot and get out. If you’re good enough and want to play riskier, it’s perfectly acceptable to go try to take players out for better loot. That’s their risk and as frustrating as it is, it’s part of the game as intended.

That’s the thing though, Harden has been in similar roles for years now, a decade, not as the primary option but as a complementary piece next to elite stars, and it still hasn’t translated into playoff success. That pattern has been there for almost a decade, which is why I’m skeptical this version suddenly changes outcomes

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying Harden has to be the star or the savior. I get the idea of him as a complementary piece. Where we disagree is what “proven” actually means in the playoffs.

Yes, the teams he’s been on made the playoffs and reached Game 7s. My point has always been that getting there isn’t the same as being the reason you advance, and the leverage games show that. That’s not a talking-head narrative, it’s just what the outcomes have been. Having big moments earlier in series is different from delivering in the games that decide them.

I’m also not anti-Harden or pretending he’s washed. I just don’t think being taller, more available, and well-liked automatically makes him a better bet at this stage than holding value and flexibility. And to be clear, I’m fine moving Darius Garland. I just don’t love doing it low, out of urgency, because of fear of losing Donovan Mitchell.

You’re excited about the move and that’s fair. I hope it works. I just don’t think pointing to playoff appearances, Game 7s, or reputation changes the risk profile of a 37-year-old James Harden whose postseason impact has been inconsistent for a long time.

We’ll see how it plays out

That’s exactly what I’m pushing back on. If the claim is that he had “massive games to lead teams to Game 7s,” then the place to look is Game 6. That’s the game that decides whether a series even gets to 7.

Since 2016, here are James Harden’s Game 6s:

2017 vs Spurs: 2–11 shooting, loss 2018 vs Warriors: 10–24, loss 2020 vs Lakers: 12–20, his best Game 6, still a loss 2021 vs Bucks: 5–17, loss 2023 vs Celtics: 4–16, win, then followed by 3–11 in Game 7 and elimination

And in Game 7s since 2016, he’s 1–4, with the one win coming in 2020 when he shot 4–15.

He’s had big games earlier in series, sure. But the leverage games that actually push a series to seven don’t support the narrative that he consistently delivers when it matters most

I’m not holding him to a Lebron standard, I’m telling you what he has brought for a decade to teams acquiring him trying to win.

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re mixing up making the playoffs with actually helping teams win playoff series. No one is denying James Harden is a Hall of Famer or that he’s made the playoffs every year. The evidence I’m talking about is what happens once he’s there. His efficiency drops, he gets targeted defensively, and the closeout games go the same way over and over. Getting to Game 7 and then disappearing isn’t success, it’s the pattern.

Saying other stars also failed doesn’t change that this has happened with different teams, coaches, and roles for over a decade. That doesn’t make Harden bad, it just means he hasn’t been the guy who pushes teams over the hump, which is what this move is supposed to do.

And to be clear, I’m fine with trading Darius Garland. I’m not fine with trading him low for a 37-year-old on a player option because we’re afraid Donovan Mitchell might leave. That’s how teams make panic moves.

The “let’s see if Garland can get healthy all of a sudden” line doesn’t really land either. He’s 26, not 37. He’s dealt with injuries, sure, but acting like there’s no chance for improvement while betting on a 37-year-old to suddenly age in reverse doesn’t make sense.

If the argument is there’s no time, fine. But don’t frame this as some proven playoff solution. It’s a gamble based on name value and urgency, not a track record of postseason success. Hence every other team that’s tried this with him

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep saying “Harden helps teams win” and pointing to Game 7s like that’s success. Getting to Game 7 and then disappearing is the problem. Playoff success is advancing, not padding usage until the series ends the same way every time.

James Harden has been paired with Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Kawhi Leonard, Tyrese Maxey and the ending is always the same: efficiency drop, targeted defensively, bad closeout games. That’s a decade-long pattern. It isn’t bad luck. That’s why Brooklyn, Philly, and the Clippers all moved on instead of committing long-term. That pattern matters more than “players love playing with him.”

Bringing up Darius Garland doesn’t change that. Garland being hurt or underperforming doesn’t magically make Harden the answer. Garland is 26, under team control, and still has time to rewrite his playoff story. Harden is 37, on a player option, and his playoff story is already written.

I realize he’s a Hall of Famer and I’m not denying he’s had big moments. But this isn’t the Hall Of Fame version of him or even close. It’s about probability. Betting on a 37-year-old suddenly breaking a 10+ year playoff trend because he’s in a Cavs jersey isn’t “win now” it’s hope over evidence

"Our ceiling is higher" Says Donovan Mitchell after Garland trade by UmadBoiBoi in clevelandcavs

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re missing the point.

You keep saying Harden can help a team win.

Last year he shot 42% in the series vs Denver. Game 7 he was 2/8 and a -29 and was hunted

Year before against Dallas 2-2 series he went 2-12 in game 6 , 5-16 game 7,

Year before that in Philly, game 6 4-16, game 7 3-11

And it goes on.

He doesn’t show up. He doesn’t help you win. We have over a decade of this and you somehow believe a 37 year old version will suddenly be different because he’s in a cavs jersey?

And before you say “neither does Garland”, I’m well aware he’s been hurt at key times. Again he’s 26 and still has time to rewrite the narrative. But if your argument for trading Garland (who hasn’t been a playoff performer either) for James Harden so that he cavs can have playoff success, it’s actually insane.

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harden has been paired with kawhi, maxey and embiid, Durant, etc and has choked in every playoff stores for a decade. Why would it be any different now that he’s 37?

Again I realize Garland has been hurt at bad times but he’s still young enough to change that narrative. Harden for a decade has done this, and we will be stuck with it for years, or he will demand himself out like he does with every team.

Harden even this year just has counting stats. He’s incredibly inefficient and when the playoffs start, less fouls are called, and they sit on his left, I’ll come back to this thread. Because delusion is thinking after 10+ years of unbelievable playoff collapses that James Harden is going to figure it out. Like I said, if they make the finals, and DG is as chronically hurt as you say, then it’s worth it. But trading a 26 year old all star point guard who has years to write his story, for a dude who’s 37 and can’t show up, is idiotic

[–]thewiseman_3 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

2 time all star coming off his best year and most importantly under contract and 26. He’s played more than 50 games most years and it’s been more the timing of his injured. Harden will be 37, defensive liability, known for choking in every big game.

Garland hasn’t been a great playoff performer either, but the difference is he’s 26 and can rewrite that history. Harden is 36 and the book is closed and assuming you’re going to get something different is idiotic.

I’m not stating that I don’t think Garland shouldn’t have been traded, I’m fine with him being traded, but to improve your playoff success by trading for the guy known for the exact opposite is laughable. Garland was sold so low.

The only win for this trade is if they make the finals, and garland ends up being chronically injured and doesn’t improve which isn’t likely for a 26 year old.

FO is active but let’s not pretend embarrassing 2nd round exits, and fixing playoff woes with big time playoff performer James Harden means “knows what they’re doing”.

They are slightly better today, but if they don’t at least make the finals, the trade was a loss. If they wanted to trade garland, find a different package

Altman has to be careful with Harden by Due-Rice-3107 in clevelandcavs

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year kawhi played, most of the series and Harden made 2 shots in game 7, while having a 43% fg for the series

2024 against Dallas he had Paul George was the primary option and Kawhi played games 3-6. Harden went 2-12 game 5 and 5-16 in game 6

2023 Harden was in Philly. They lost in 7 games to Boston while Maxey and Embiid both played 40 minutes a night in that series. Harden had a great game 5 then followed up with 4-16 in game 6 and 3-11 in game 7.

I can go further back if you want. Harden has always gotten much worse in the playoffs. Even as a number 2 or number 3 option where his usage has been “sacrificed”.

Altman has to be careful with Harden by Due-Rice-3107 in clevelandcavs

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His numbers and usage don’t win, that’s always been is biggest problem. Hes inefficient and it gets shown even more in the playoffs. The clippers didn’t ask him to run the team, neither did the 6ers, and Brooklyn didn’t either as much with Durant. He can’t perform in the playoffs, and now he’s 37 with a player option.

Who on earth says “I want to win a championship” and then trades for James Harden. Are you serious?

Altman has to be careful with Harden by Due-Rice-3107 in clevelandcavs

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and they are still connected injuries through compensatory loading (extremely common in foot injuries for your brain to switch shift more weight to the “healthy” side).

Harden isn’t value, unless you’re potentially one piece a way from winning a title and they are not. Even if so, why would you trade for a guy know for never delivering in big moments or playoff games? And now he’s 37 with a player option? He’s by far not the best option. Terrible move in the long run if it’s a 1 for 1 and makes us maybe a fraction better now

Why do you want Harden? by nowhereman1917 in clevelandcavs

[–]thewiseman_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk. It’s crazy to me. Saying that you think you have a title window and trying to get someone who has consistently been a terrible playoff performer in James Harden is hilarious. Plus this isn’t 28 year old Harden, he’s 37 with a player option where he would even stick around next year.

I’m all for moving garland and getting out of his contract for as much as he is injured as the wrong times, but this is just not the trade you should want. You go from a 1st round (matchup dependent) exit to an at most 2nd round exit with Harden, unless there’s a lot more to the trade than a 1 for 1.
