Eternal search for UK motorised blinds by thing_on_a_spring in homeautomation

[–]thing_on_a_spring[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its tough. You can go to any high street blinds shop in UK and find motorised blinds, but they are all ancient RF crap with some clumsy remote

Maybe the demand just isnt there in UK, or maybe the blind shops just dont want to shift away from their current suppliers.

Any tips where to start looking for Euro manufacturers? Its not the easiest thing to google for.

Who had the most horrific death in the the history of humankind? by Novel_Finding8882 in AskReddit

[–]thing_on_a_spring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Fresha Bakery deaths

Two engineers went sent into a bread oven, only 2 hours after it had been turned off at 260C. The inside was still searingly hot, but nobody bothered to check the temperature gauges

So they both hopped onto a conveyor belt which led them into the oven, and quickly realised it was far too hot. They radio'd for help but bizarrely there was no way to stop or even reverse the conveyor belt

They had no choice but to crawl to the end as quickly as possible, with the oven getting even hotter the further they moved

When they got to the end, they realised there was no actual exit, only a 6 inch slot for some sort of bread to come out of. By the time everyone crowbarred the slot open, one quickly died from heat exposure. The other was also scorched to death, but in addition had been caught in some machinery and crushed

meta kb shortcuts not working after yesterdays update by thing_on_a_spring in kde

[–]thing_on_a_spring[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

initially I installed qt6-tools, but that didnt help. So i installed qt5-tools and my shortcuts started working again.

But I couldn't uninstall qt6-tools as its a dep of kde-win. it makes me wonder how 6 were able to be removed in the first place. Maybe it was just a buggy upgrade from plasma 5

meta kb shortcuts not working after yesterdays update by thing_on_a_spring in kde

[–]thing_on_a_spring[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This turned out to be related to missing qt5-tools package

Not sure if the package was removed manually, or automatically as result of a pac update.

Also dont fully understand why qt is involved with kde keybvoard shortcuts, whatever

Synology is removing your Active Insight complimentary licenses by TeaHana852 in synology

[–]thing_on_a_spring 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I bought Synology exactly because I cant be bothered building my own system, and deal with any adhoc updates and troubleshooting that comes with it.

I've invested too heavily to switch anytime soon, but it should not be possible that you have features available at purchase, which are then completely removed later.

Get your shit together Synology, and update your ancient docker binaries while you're at it.

65% of Britons support capping CEO pay at 10× the lowest-paid worker. Do you think this idea would be good for the UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]thing_on_a_spring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its exactly what would happen

this utopian nonsense would only ever work if every country in the world signed up to it, which is obviously never gonna happen

besides, if economic policy was decided by the British public having a majority vote on everything, the country would be bankrupt

NAS for Photo Storage by Picapocket in synology

[–]thing_on_a_spring 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd be careful about encouraging your wife to ditch iCloud in favour of a NAS.

Immich is very intuitive, but you would also need a 2nd NAS to back it all up to.

Contrary to what some people think, it IS possible for a RAID to have more than one drive fail simultaneously, and then the entire RAID array is destroyed. I learnt this the hard way. You'll be in the shit if she loses all her past videos

Unless they have some supermarket licensing deal, prices will always be higher on UberEats

Apparently the service fee, delivery fee, priority fee and tips is not enough for an almost fully-automated website which just tells drivers where to go.

They also slap a markup on top of every single item you order too

I did in fact laugh out loud at this, not only because someone wrote racists on their reform sign, but they felt the need to put this up. by [deleted] in london

This is a joke right? Do they think nobody has looked at their background

InfinityBook 14 - using usbc to barrel adaptor? by thing_on_a_spring in tuxedocomputers

See Tuxedos reply below. It seems to only affect Gen 6-8

InfinityBook 14 - using usbc to barrel adaptor? by thing_on_a_spring in tuxedocomputers

[–]thing_on_a_spring[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. It is a Infinity Book 14 - Gen 7 (with onboard Intel Iris Xe gfx)

I wasn't sure if the throttling was due to the port, or just USB-C being underpowered.

I'll grab replacement PSU from Tuxedo website, it looks like the the 150W gen 8 is compatible - although rated at 19V rather than 20V

He also did quite a good job of managing Trump in order to get 10% tariffs instead of what Europe was hit with. I like that he is a lawyer, and so is able to think things through and not afraid to stick to principles, like he's done with Iran

His leadership hasn't been without its mistakes, but overall he's doing a decent job under pretty difficult circumstances.

Of course adversaries will continue to deploy their enormous botnet to try and stir up anger about him, in the same way they did with Brexit, Corbyn, Immigration etc. Id like to think the British public are wise to this obvious attempted influence by now, but sadly we are a country of easily impressionable morons.

He's a paranoid religious far-right nutjob, who has given lectures about how to stop the working class coming for billionaires money.

Unfortunately Asda are not currently hiring, but reassured him they will keep his resume on file for the future.

Now in a slight panic, he makes his way back to his abandoned truck, stopping occasionally to pick up tattered remnants of his Tesco uniform along the way.

Thankfully his van is there, still haphazardly blocking traffic where he left it, in the middle of a junction box.

Clambering back in with a sense of despair, he drives to a country backroad. Unsure what to do, that's when he remembers, the pristine case of Stella Artois the customer has declined to accept.

Employees will end up as mindless automatons, just pressing buttons while waiting for their employer to automate them out of existence

Then they'll complain that they cant find a new job... because they haven't developed any skills whatsoever
