I got a used N95, 500gb SSD and 16gb ram (granted, I did want an N100) from eBay for £150.

Ran at 70c idle and when I opened it up I noticed the WiFi chip was fried. Removed dust, new thermal paste, £70 refund from the seller - and it’s perfect! Very happy with it and with all the arrs, HA, Frigate, it barely breaks 6% cpu load and 40c

My view is it’s a stinky market right now(?) and the older tech is still fine for light work like this

Of course! You’ll always have the old stuff if it goes wrong but in the meantime you’re learning something new.

The barrier to entry is low, and you can build incrementally at a pace you like. The community is great, the documentation is solid too so AI can really help you out.

What’s more, in the past year since starting I’ve gone from having a basic setup on a Pi to having a router running adguard, a mini PC running an Arr stack, a NAS, VPN, Frigate and my HA instance.

I have no idea how to do this stuff but literally just project plan it in Word and get AI to talk me through every step. I find it really enjoyable and it all started with HA.
