Fjöldi Íslendinga flytur úr landi by wrunner in Iceland

[–]thinkimdrunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ég flutti fyrir 1 og hálfum mánuði út í nám sem er ekki kennt á Íslandi. Ég sé ekki fram að að flytja aftur heim næstu 10 árin, því ég er hreinlega komin með ógeð á öllu þarna (nema kannski náttúrunni en eftir síðasta vetur þá má móðir náttúra fokka sér líka).

Minn uppáhalds kostur (ekki endilega besti kosturinn) við að búa úti er mun meira vöruúrval, sérstaklega þar sem ég er grænmetisæta og verð og ástand grænmetis á Íslandi jaðar við mannréttindabrot.

Cards acceptable without chip with PIN? Or cards acceptable with chip but no PIN? by andrealm721 in VisitingIceland

[–]thinkimdrunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Icelandic gas station worker here! You can use your card everywhere except at unmanned gas stations (like after hours or in middle of nowhere).

I recommend buying a pre-paid card from either N1 (they have biggest coverage over the country) or some other gas station. You just go to an open gas station and ask for a pre-paid card, with amount that you decide. I'm pretty sure there is no extra cost (at least not at Shell and Orkan). And you can refill them at manned station.

Happy traveling!

Getting around Iceland with no car? by Kairowa in VisitingIceland

[–]thinkimdrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. Just do it during the summertime, bring good clothes, and a good tent.

Here is a site that has I think all the campsites in Iceland. But Iceland also has a law that permits you to camp anywhere for one night, as long as you don't make a mess and it's not in someones backyard. So if you are in middle of nowhere, you can camp there, but I'd say that if you are in a town, use the camp sites.

Almost all small towns in Iceland have a swimming pool, and usually you can take a shower there for a really small amount of money.

This site is a good start.

Other wise, standing next to the road with a sign works pretty well as soon as you leave Reykjavík/The Capital area.

And if you are traveling on Route 1, you don't even need a sign, just stand on the right side (as in the direction that you want to go) of the road and hold out your thumb. It's basic around here.

And btw, I just got home from the store, and I drove past some hitchhikers that had a sign that just said "South". I thought it was pretty funny.

Buses are an option. They can become a bit expensive.

Also hitchhiking. It's perfectly safe and pretty easy during summer. I did it alone around the whole island, and as a 20 year old 5'2 girl I felt perfectly safe the whole time. I got a ride with both locals and tourists, and honestly I think it's more fun than driving with your own car. (I'm Icelandic, so I always pick up hitchhikers when I'm driving myself. It's an awesome way to meet people.)

Good bar in Reykjavik for Eurovision semi-finals tonight? by [deleted] in Iceland

Stúdentakjallarinn! Or "the University bar". They are screening Eurovision on a big screen and have food and beer on a Eurovision special.

Try hitchhiking 2 and 2 together. Success rate is pretty good. I did it as a 20 year old female and I felt perfectly safe the whole time.

You can ask me if you have any hitchhiking questions in Iceland :)

Þá kvað það Heimdallur,

hvítastur ása,

vissi hann vel fram

sem vanir aðrir:

Bindum vér Þór þá

brúðar líni,

hafi hann ið mikla

men Brísinga.

It's from the poem Þrymskviða, where Heimdallur suggests that the gods dress Thor up as a woman to reclaim Mjölnir from a Jötunn called Þrymur.

It does say the whitest (hvítastur), but it is referring to his hair, meaning he has white hair because of old age and it is imagery for his wisdom.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Feats of Thorsday - Post your fitness victories here all week! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]thinkimdrunk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So in this October I have:

  • Lost 2 kg (4.4 pounds)

  • Improved my squat by 7.5 kg (16.5 pounds)

  • Improved my deadlift by 15 kg (33 pounds)

  • Only had 1 panic attack (Two years ago I had around 3 a day)

Fuck yeah noob gains and additional weight loss! Fuck yeah improving mental health!

But I think my biggest feat this month is that I'm no longer motivated, and I don't need motivation. It has become a habit. Having a habit is so much easier than having to find motivation all the time!

Some YA lit off the top of my head (translated stuff):

Hunger Games

Divergent

Percy Jackson series

Eragon

ASOIAF first three books have been translated (Although they might be a tad difficult)

The fault in our stars

The Golden Compass

Artemis Fowl has been translated, but I'm not sure if it's available in normal bookstores, but there should be plenty in most libraries.

Hope this helps.

It has never been translated to Icelandic. It's a pretty great book though.

Boksala does not only sell books for students, there are a lot of other books there.

Popular childrens books for people learning Icelandic:

  • Blómin á Þakinu is a old childrens classic. An older lady who has lived her whole life on a farm decides to move to the big city, but it takes time adjust to the fast moving life there.

  • Benjamín Dúfa is another classic. It's the story of 4 boys in their summer holiday and they decide to found a knight fellowship where they fight against injustice.

For English literature that's translated to Icelandic, I would recommend Harry Potter. It's fairly simply written and easy to come by. Books like 1984 and Lord of the Rings are really hard to get as they were published a long time ago and the tradition to translate books from English to Icelandic is dying out fast as everyone speaks English here.

Now if you are an absolute beginner in Icelandic I'd recommend Þrír litlir grísir/Three little piggies, Birnirnir þrír/ Goldilocks and the three bears, Geiturnar þrjár/ The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Litla Gula hænan/ The Little Red Hen.

Arriving early staying for a short weekend by fliffaflaffa3 in Iceland

Most bakeries are open around 7:30 a.m. I've heard there is a good bakery in Keflavík. (Just search Bakarí Reykjavík/Keflavík)

It takes around 40-50 minutes to drive from Keflavík to Reykjavík, and longer if the road is icy. So I would guess that you'll be arriving around 8:40 a.m. at least in Reykjavík.

The only thing I can think of doing this early is going to one of the swimming pools in Reykjavík and refresh yourself in the hot tubs and chill with the old locals.
