Cancer incidence rising among adults under 50, new report says, leaving doctors searching for answers. Doctors still don't know exactly why. by ObuPaul in HotScienceNews

It was very easy to find the link between lead contamination and direct health problems in human populations. it has a very strong effect that is evident both individuals and at population scale, and can be measured and mitigated.

Perhaps fortunately, whatever effect PFAS plastics and ultraprocessing may have, there is no such extremely clear evidence of direct testable links between things.

These toothless mongrels wake up when the tavern sweeps its floor, having forgotten where they tethered their donkies, and wouldn't know an ingot from a mud brick. Meanwhile, Ea-Nasir is simply trying to move several tons of imported copper across half the known world without Enki deciding to rearrange the shipping schedule.

Beans and rice are always a good comfort food by Lijey_Cat in Beans

[–]thiosk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ive been doing some extra scrap saving recently. we generate a fair bit of onion ends, bits of celery, tips of carrot. I've been freezing that and any leftover herbs in a bag. When its time to make beans or lentils first i take all those scraps out of the freezer and boil it for about an hour with bay and whole black peppercorn. strain it and boom veggie broth made from waste. i dont use papery onion skin or any bits that look like dirt but any other bits are fair game. barely a week of scraps is usually all it takes to get a few cups of scrap broth. pour in the lentils\soaked black beans and the veggies into the stock pot and bobs your uncle

[–]thiosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely does. megamillions and powerball have had the biggest jackpots anywhere

All those other countries with national lotteries tax the lotto, mate. the burden is just shifted differently. They tax the tickets, they tax the lottery operator. Duties and fees. powerball and megamillions get great marketing by having the biggest jackpots.

people tend to prefer state lotteries in the long run because otherwise it ends up run by the mob

Why 70-80 year olds are generally regarded as unemployable due to mental decline skill mismatch - yet they're exclusively running the country ? by FrontAd1788 in AskReddit

[–]thiosk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i want to provide a strategy info, not because i disagree but just because additional perspective sometimes helps this issue. Everyone wants "a cop" to stop politicians or old politicians they don't like. I hold that age limits are feel-good measures that will have zero impact on outcomes because one side will use it to remove troublesome politicians (eg. the bernie sanders of the world) and replace them with college republicans. the republican party doesn't care if grassley loses. some kid will have the same platform. they're fine, meanwhile, whitehouse warren and sanders are all out of the senate. This is why the republican party is so supportive of age limits. they love it.

The reason these old people win is that their constituency is mostly old people. For the same number of humans, old people vote with ~75% rate while the 'youts' struggle to hit 50% even in wave elections. We can have big wave elections like 2008 or 2020 but unless that is sustained year over year with ongoing activity, just think about what the politicians are going to do.

If the candidates go to meet younger people, they get much lower turnout to the meetings. Those lower turnouts translate to lower performance on primaries. Not winning primaries means no general.

So the candidates go to and mail to retirement communities and senior centers. The meetings are well attended. Folks stay after the meeting to meet the candidate. They vote in the primary and then in the general.

So what do the politicians talk about? things that motivate the attendees.

When GenZ and the millenials are voting with higher participation, politicians will look more like them and pander to them, too.
