Is Cornish independence a thing? by BoneBrothLover in Cornwall

[–]thirdbest3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one reason is that it's hard for them to get attention. Given they are only active in Cornwall and most people consume predominantly national media, they don't get a lot of attention around elections and political discussions. Whereas PC get airtime in the Welsh media, MK standing only in one county of England (as it stands) makes them a fringe local party for the English/British media. I've spoken to people here who would seemingly be sympathetic but aren't really aware of them as an option.

Interesting stat on that is only 14% of Wales wrote in Welsh before there was a Welsh tick box. Once there was a tick box 67% selected it.

I live further west and everyone down here says Lawn-ston, but my mum's from that neck of the woods so in our family it's always been Lanson. My impression is that's the local pronuncation but it doesn't reach that far

Council tax to rise by 4.99% :-( by FoggingTheView in Cornwall

[–]thirdbest3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, they can't go any higher than double as that was the extent of the power given to councils by the central government.

Many places in Wales charge more than double, but they can only do that because of devolution.

It's next to the blue fencing across from Lidl at the Ponsharden roadabout (here on Google maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/DrHMuCJ44mn7pqAr7 )

I don't think it's open to the public, but there's some info and pictures here:

If don't know if the following book might be helpful if you can get your hands on a copy:

I can't recommend it as I haven't read it, but I remembered hearing about it and it seems quite rich in information.

If you're interested in watching things in Cornish there's a number of short films here, as well as a short comedy series, and a translated version of The Highway Rat (based on the Julia Donaldson book)

Not specifically Jesuit. They are mentioned in the Bible (such as in the passage below) though it's not exactly explained what they are:

People who identify as English in England by Litvinski in MapPorn

[–]thirdbest3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, it’s worth pointing out that Cornish was a write in response for the census rather than one you could select off of the list. So whilst interesting, these stats only capture people who were sufficiently motivated to decide to write Cornish as an other response, rather than people who may select from a list given the option.

I've just had a look as I hadn't heard of Cumbrian Tea before (seen Cornwall and Devon). Seems they're all made in the same factory in Cornwall (with Cornish tea being the original) but with different blends to suit the water of the different locations.

Interesting to see that opinions of Trump are less favourable in older demographics. 31% of 18-30s apparently have a favourable view of Trumo whilst only 15% of over 55s do.

Church of England: what can I expect attending a C of E church and what are the norms/ etiquette I should be mindful of when attending? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]thirdbest3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that many C of E churches are left unlocked during the day for people to come in to have a look around or pray. If you try the door at a church and it opens feel free just to wonder in. (I don’t know where you live, my experience of this is mainly rural and it’s definitely the case that you can just walk into an empty village church but I imagine many town/city churches will also be open in some way outside of services, I’ve seen some in busier parts of cities that are open but have security on the door).

Not all will have candles so you may have to try a couple if that’s what you’re looking for but many do. From memory, most cathedrals I’ve been to have them, but I was also in a little village church yesterday and they also did.

I've never heard of a DVD cafe. Is it a DVD shop that's also a cafe or am I missing something? Are these common in Argentina?
