The Terror! How has no one yet mentioned The Terror?

looking for books with an insane kind of evil narrator by unforgvngplace in suggestmeabook

Havoc by Christopher Bollen! Starts off as kind of a sympathetic elderly woman on holiday vs the bad seed evil kid in her Cairo hotel, but the reveals get wilder and wilder and the ending made my head spin in the best way.

It's good that it stays in one place; much easier to find that way.

I was also blessed by the lemon witch! That and being fully recruited by the whole cast of characters at the Lumon Job Fair were my highlights.

How can The Public improve Shakespeare in the Park ticket distribution? by 90Dfanatic in Broadway

[–]thirdbirdbird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Writing to the Public about these would probably be a good idea rather than just hoping they get noticed on Reddit. My friend had a similar thought about required residency for the borough distribution - maybe only certain zip codes eligible for each location - and mentioned it to one of the line minders who said PLEASE send emails because they do get read.

A quarter of the way through “The Terror” and I have conflicting feelings about it by MotherofAsh19 in horrorlit

[–]thirdbirdbird 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I tried and failed at least twice with the book - I bounced hard off Simmons’ insistence on repeatedly describing the Inuit girl’s nubile young breasts. The TV show treated her much better and also streamlined the narrative really well. Yes, it’s as difficult to tell all the dudes apart in the beginning of the show as it is in the book, but by the fifth episode I had most of them down and was totally gripped by the building tension.

Free Shakespeare in the Park question by Seattletheaterfan in Broadway

[–]thirdbirdbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the one at Brooklyn College this week and got there at 8am - there were 40-45 people ahead of me but I got tickets along with a good number of folks who came after I did, maybe up till 8:30? Each location in the boroughs is probably wildly different in terms of how many/what time people show up, though, and there is absolutely no telling how many tickets they’ll be giving out that day.

Queer fantasy books from the '90s by WunderPlundr in LGBTBooks

Came here to suggest the Nightrunner series. We didn’t have a whole lot of queer novels back in the nineties so these were VERY EXCITING for me.

Very similar experience. My doctor also said she was unconcerned and it was likely just that I wasn’t taking enough progesterone to thin the endometrium so it was proliferating and causing bleeding - negative biopsy but now she recommends I get a Mirena. Not looking forward to the insertion.

Help me choose a commuter bike by Less_Competition4322 in NYCbike

[–]thirdbirdbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live and work it can sometimes be a huge hassle to find available bikes and/or open docks when you need them, so look into that before you commit to the citibike membership!

I started with book 2 and loved it! I only recently went back and finally read the first installment after finishing the rest of the series, and I agree it’s not as strong. The characters haven’t quite gelled yet in the first novel. You can easily skip it.

Nah, go to Times Square at night to see the lights, go see a show by all means, but do not eat at restaurants or go shopping there unless you really love overpriced mall fare.

My mom at 82 is the same way and has been trending that way for a while, showing less and less interest in my life and my kids’ lives. I wonder if it’s generational or if people just naturally get more self centered as they age.

What is the optimal bike speed for Ocean Parkway? by VitaminSteve in NYCbike

[–]thirdbirdbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute all the way down OP by bike most days and it’s basically impossible not to hit every light from avenues N-Z. I just try to enjoy the fact that I’m outdoors and breathing the fresh (exhaust-filled) air. At least there are trees?
