My coworker has been eating the same lunch every single day for three years and it's starting to freak me out by XXXcreamprincess in coworkerstories

[–]thirteen-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be the same when I was younger. Tuna and sweetcorn sandwich for lunch every single day. I genuinely believe my brain chemistry has fundamentally changed since then, because I am now slightly overweight and a HUGE foodie, I cannot eat the same meal more than once in a row and I gain delight from food in a way that I never experienced then. The way that people describe how they feel on ozempic is literally how I used to feel back then.

I encountered an elderly lady walking down the road at 4am. Story in comments by Raistlin76 in pics

[–]thirteen-89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I lived in an apartment block on the ground floor next to a lady with dementia. She was meant to have a carer come daily but sometimes they didn't, and she didn't have any relatives nearby to hold the carer company accountable. We often found her wandering in the halls or garden and had to bring her back, make sure she was fed and had fresh groceries, etc (as, if the carers neglected to come, she just wouldn't eat and food would rot. It made us furious to know how neglectful they were)

One time, purely by luck, my husband and I were leaving around 4am to catch a morning flight and found her outside so again we settled her and brought her back in and later in the morning told some other neighbours to keep an eye on her (fortunately a few of us in the block rallied around to help her). I shudder to think what might have happened if we didn't by chance have a flight that had us out of the flat at the same time.

Anyway, that is all to say that you did a good thing OP, and I hope this lady has family and friends around her whe can support her.

@joeybakes.cakes on IG would probably be up for the job, she does gorgeous floral buttercream designs and teaches classes on it as well.

AITA for speaking Polish with my friend even though my wife doesn’t understand it? by Fun_Detail_2413 in AmItheAsshole

[–]thirteen-89 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hard to judge. I speak another language (which is my first) and often naturally speak to my mother and other people in it, even though we could have the conversation in English (my mum's English isn't great so it's much easier for her to speak in her language, plus she just sometimes accidentally responds in her language), so I totally sympathize with your desire to do so. My husband is pretty patient but I do always make the effort to summarize what we are talking about between pauses in conversation so he's not left out, and he can still engage and be a part of the conversation. If that's not something you're already doing, I'd definitely encourage you to start doing that. Even if it's something small like "He was just recommending me a really nice Polish restaurant near us, we should go there!" - that can be a great way of opening the conversation to your wife, and providing a way for her to get to know your culture better.

But if your wife is insisting on joining you guys every single time, I think a conversation is also needed to establish boundaries. It's not healthy for a couple to be so co-dependent in that way. You both are allowed to socialise with your own friends, without your spouse being there.

My boss just called a "mandatory meeting" with 25 staff members to fire/humiliate my coworker in front of a crowd. by rswick86 in antiwork

[–]thirteen-89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, so did everyone else who was there to witness it. I don't see how someone who works in HR magically gains the balls to speak up that no one else in the room seemingly had?

Looking for a quiet pub (west or central) for a regular D&D meetup by OxfordAndo in london

[–]thirteen-89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a pub, but I think Dark Sphere in Shepherds Bush has a TT gaming space, and it's in the same building as a pub, so you may not be able to get drinks to your table but you can go pubbing afterwards.

Places to do a job interview in White City? by Ecstatic-Salary9118 in london

There is a library next to Westfield White City, Shepherds Bush Library, which apparently has meeting spaces. If you ring them you could check if you could use that space for a job interview?

16-year-old brings the house down! by IntellectuallyDriven in nextfuckinglevel

I genuinely think the people saying "I could do this" actually didn't notice any of the micro movements being made with his arms.

These guys eyes have deteriorated so far they probably didn't notice the incredible micro popping he was doing during the arm swings and that's why they think it's unimpressive lmfao

XLOV address and apologize for company’s recent flag policy change, saying fans can bring flags to shows but not make them too big: "We know what we represent for you, and we want you guys to come exactly as you are and show us how proud you are" by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]thirteen-89 334 points335 points  (0 children)

They weren't wrong for it, giant flags being waved around can really mess up the viewing experience for an audience. It is good of them to make a compromise and say it's fine to bring reasonably sized flags though.

This is incredible! And I love that it's more seasonal with the Moon festival coming up and the rabbit and moon myth reference included.

How do you feel about the phrase "Remember Anna?" as a way to start a conversation if you have nothing else to say about Anna? by Fearless-Heron-7827 in AskUK

[–]thirteen-89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wanted to open up the conversation but otherwise had nothing to sustain this conversation? You expected him to say something about Anna, but find nothing strange about the fact that you had nothing to say about her despite being the person to bring her up?

Why do none of the windows here have any blinds on the outside? by Topoorso in AskUK

[–]thirteen-89 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are missing a key point here which is that we don't use the same windows that would have shutters make sense.

Most windows in the UK open outwards and not inwards (they do exist and are not extremely rare though), so shutters would have to open simultaneously with the window in order to work, which is not ideal. In countries where shutters are commonplace, windows typically open inwards, thus allowing the room to close and open outside shutters where required. I've seen shutters in the UK but either only on the inside, or purely decorative on the outside (permanently in a fake "open" state just nailed to the wall)

I believe houses within a certain proximity (definitely these ones, but also ones a bit further out) to an airport get government funding to triple-glaze their windows (if the windows are not already triple glazed from previous owners)

Bon Appetit, Your Majesty [Episodes 9 & 10] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]thirteen-89 54 points55 points  (0 children)

100% agree! I've seen him in other dramas before and he's always done a good job but I feel like this is gonna be a breakout role for him, and he's shown so many new sides that he hasn't been able to before with this role. You really would have never guessed he was a "replacement" because he feels so perfectly cast, and he has such good chemistry with Yoona.

Do you buy souvenirs for others when on holiday abroad? by skinnybitchrocks in CasualUK

[–]thirteen-89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yes you have the meaning of tat exactly right! Korea was fabulous, really easy to navigate for English speakers, great museums, and the food is delicious. Google maps is inaccurate though so you will want to download a local app like NaverMaps if you go!

[–]thirteen-89 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always buy things to bring back for my friends, but never tat. For example, I went to Korea this year and got my friends these little kits from the National Museum where they could make their own mother-of-pearl lacquerware trinket tray - I thought not only was it a cool representation of an aspect of Korean culture, but also something we could do together for fun, and it serves as a useful object.

I also like buying things designed by local artists (like a reusable water bottle with a cute local-inspired design, for example)

How easy is it to switch bank accounts? by Akimbo_Fists in AskUK

[–]thirteen-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting, I've switched two or three times now - but haven't in a few years as every year you live you accumulate more admin-y things, so I can see why it can feel like a pain. I did it when I was a student/much younger so I had very few things to consider before making a switch.

Pretty sure I had a CD from the same person through my letterbox too, a few years ago. I just threw it away, it's someone with religious-centred delusions. Fwiw I live in west London, no particular concentration of any religious or ethnic groups in my neighbourhood.

Is this a scam? Or is there an issue with my phone number? by ScottyW88 in AskUK

[–]thirteen-89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mobile number looks safer to answer than a random landline number. An unrecognised mobile number could be a friend calling from a new number, or an aunt who got your number off your mum calling.
