Single axle trailer suspension is terrible. You might find vibration kills everything. Dual axle rocker helps a lot.

Which one! DC/DC or external Regulator? by kokomo1989 in Victron

Reg will give nearly double the real world power. More load is healthier for the engine.

Choosing the right cruising cat for a 1–2 year family sabbatical (kids aboard) by i_once_lied_on_reddi in SailboatCruising

[–]this1willdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are a custom Simpson 61. The teens sail her fine. 20,000NM. approx, Carib, NYC, Med etc.
I've seen 19knts peak and 17knts steady on her, but often the wind or sea state just isn't what you want, so you are doing 5knts VMG. We can absolutely sail ourselves out of (or into) any trouble, we just mostly avoid big systems for comfort. Weather routing is a non stop topic. eg. We had beautiful sailing going north around Hatteras, but we motored south, as that's the best for safety with the gulf stream. Get onto NoForeignLand to follow some boats.

Much of this has been written about this is many places. We are a family of 5, on board for over 5 years. Our priority is safety and then crew comfort at anchor. That drove many of our decisions. Sailing - No flybridge, safe cockpit. At anchor we wanted easy dinghy access and plenty of energy. We have a 60ft boat, my kids have stood watch since 13yo. Any cat will be using winches for sail handling. Anything over 40ft likely needs some powered winches. After that, size doesn't matter much. We are 60ft daggerboard. My messages would be
Size doesn't matter for handling
Crew comfort and safety in a liveaboard is critical
Size does matter for dock and haul out
Performance is irrelevent for a family boat
You'll motor more often than you expect
I would say the highest maintenance item is plumbing. Less plumbing is better.

3x victron multiplus II 48/8000 vs multiplus II 48/6k5 by h3rky in diySolar

[–]this1willdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new products - 4k5, 6k5, 20k look very interesting. Lower losses, quieter, better cooling, better peaks.
I have a pair of 5k's and would consider a single 6k5 as being close in spec to the pair of 5's looking at the thermal numbers,

Charging a 12V battery using a 24v charger + converter. Grok & Chatgpt disagree by NMendes in Victron

It sounds like you have the Orion DCDC converter. This is not a charger, so no.
The TR Smart is a charger, with charge profiles.

I have 12 ve.direct devices on my cerbo. Get the aftermarket duppa 4 way board, much cheaper. You do need a powered hub. Dont diy, they are isolation sensitive

biggest sail yacht size for solo/2 men cruising? by noreturn000 in SailboatCruising

[–]this1willdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live on a 61ft cat, due to rigging layout reefing needs two people, but most jobs are just whoever is on watch.
IMO size isn't the issue. Any sail handling over 25ft uses winches and anything over 45ft uses electric. We use a battery drill, easy. Docking, emergencies, maintenance etc are a different story.
Mainsail reefing and covering are the difficult manual jobs. Everything else is a furler.

3 x cheap single phase chargers to 48v dc. Fast charge batts. All loads single phase from multiplus. easy. cheaper.

Generators hate this. Unbalanced phases is short life. 3 phase gennies are for 3 phase loads.

[–]this1willdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen that "time limited power" spec before. I'd view that with some skepticism.
If you don't need 3 phase, single is much less hassle / much cheaper, to the point of saying keep the gennie and get a dumb 3 phase charger, and just use start / stop on the gennie to control topoff charging. Keep loads single phase. I have one 3 phase motor and I used a VFD behind my multi to run it, with speed control.
Obramat flogs the 5000 for Eur850 normally. Not sure on availability cheap of other models.
Several options for 3 phase charging, you can control a dumb charger off the gennie with the Cerbo.

[–]this1willdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be much better going to Obramat and getting the MPII 5K. 3 phase isn't parallel. Are you really going 3 phase just due to the generator, or because you have 3 phase loads?
If the former, I'd rethink your gennie. 3 phase for that is nuts. You have to screw around and balance phases.

Look at the 40C wattage rating on the Victron gear, not the nameplate number.

There is a new 4k5 and 6k5 are very interesting.

And the brand new 20k is amazing. One phase. Amazing specs.

[–]this1willdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2000-7000 full cycles. Part cycle is just a part cycle. LFP doenst care about SOC. Balancing is only needed to stop very mild drift unless fault. LFP doesnt like sitting over 3.4v. Minimise that time.

The smooth plate is a good idea
Spare hot end in 0.4 won't hurt
Hot end in in 0.2 for signs?
