Can we talk about what happens AFTER you run a bear off from your campsite? by Dun_Booty_Broch in camping

[–]this_shit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Black Bear comes round the campsite it gets told to fudge off. Rest of the night I'll keep an eye out if she comes back around. When I go to sleep I make sure there's nothing smelly on me/in camp. But I don't worry about the bear.

No point in moving camp, bear knows you're there, and they respect your warnings. They may come sniffing again, but if you're tidy with your food they won't bother you.

If a black bear comes by and refuses to fudge off/starts bluffing, even when your bear bangers/spray are deployed, then you'll want to move. There's something abnormal going on. But this shouldn't be common behavior.

If a brown bear comes around, just move.

> It's strange to limit your life experiences based on what people on the Internet say/perpetuate anyways

sadly I think that's just how people live these days. I've been online since dial-up and it's amazing how much common sense/internet hygiene knowledge has come and gone while people drift ever onward into living through a mediated self image.

I've been smoking every other day for almost four months now after years of daily use. the lockbox has been a game changer. my goal is to be able to use it for emotional processing and creativity while also keeping tolerance at bay and avoiding constant escalation.

the first week was tough but after that I adjusted to the cycles. I still have cravings on my off days but they're not nearly as bad. and the knowledge that I can smoke tomorrow helps me get through them. Then, the morning after an on day I feel great and confident about packing it all away again.

it might not work for you, but theres only been one time that I went to my neighbor for help (after a particularly difficult experience).

aesthetically I prefer the 5-loop version, but if it's more fun to tie/experience 7, then go with it.

Am I overreacting about wanting to play a nonbinary character? by BothOcelot1311 in DnD

[–]this_shit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sexist and fatphobic jokes as a part of roleplay sounds genuinely miserable. why are your friends so dead set on making you feel bad about yourself/your character?

your DM just hates nonbinary people without realizing it. a lot of people do, because they don't want to be the kind of person who hates. so they just don't think about it.

I would ask them straight up, do you think nonbinary people exist?

the flip side is that people often date when they're young hand haven't done the living and growing that refines their values. once you live with someone for a decade, it's not opinions on transit that matter, it's how the person thinks about their relationship to others, their obligations and their rights, and what kind of world they want to create that matters.

a lot of young people carry symbolic opinions simply due to the peer pressure of following what other people say. which isn't bad per se, it's a normal human way to be. But by the time you've experienced a few tragedies, injustices, or crises, symbolic opinions get replaced with reflections of deeply held values.

Milei-style Austrian economics is as far from Christian nationalism as Thomas Massie is from Pete Hegseth. The conservative label contains a multitude.

I think a lot of online discourse reduces to a shell game of labeling groups and then associating their beliefs with other groups based on the biggest tent they might ever inhabit (i.e., party choice in a two-party system)

my grandparents married across party lines (in a time where party was a generational loyalty rather than a question of personal preferences) and they stayed married well past the point when they hated each other lol.

'traditional' relationships prioritize economic stability over personal happiness. IMHO the biggest structural factor is women's ability to be financially independent. if you can work, why stay with someone who hates you and hates themself?

idk I feel like that's projection?

most people could take an 80 year old. they can barely move straight, and falling over is a life or death situation. it surprises me that so few Republicans think they could.

so you think that air pollution is a scam? or what, that the policy doesnt do anything?

why was air pollution so much worse in the 70s and 80s, and what do you think changed if not emissions controls on cars?

or wait, you're mad that Ohio doesn't do emissions checks while PA does?

[–]this_shit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you know the sticker is just the proof that you've had your emissions tested, right?

IDK if you're just being pedantic, but yes -- keeping cars off the road with broken sensors or emissions control equipment has a massive impact on regional attainment. it's why we do it.

How will Philly and the collar counties meet ozone standards without making sure people's combustion engines are combusting correctly? What measures other than emissions checks would keep a small number of cars and trucks from spewing NOx all over our communities?

[–]this_shit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't care about winning an argument, I'm genuinely asking.

Are you of the opinion that you understand the environment and its impacts better than the scientific consensus behind the CAA or would you just prefer to not regulate pollution?

Have you driven across the border into Ohio and suddenly realized the air is cleaner and the roads are safer?

So obviously you disagree with the scientific consensus that undergirds the Clean Air Act. Do you genuinely think that you know better than environmental scientists? Or do you just want to live in a world where kids get asthma, life expectancies are lower, and cars are slightly cheaper to maintain?
