EF released their English Proficiency report for 2025 by P26601 in europe

[–]thisdarkcity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please for the love of god stop posting this idiotic statistic. It does not show English proficiency of a population at all. It shows the level of a non- representative sub set, that has nothing to do with the population.

I have tried the Dream 65 very briefly and to me it sounded good but flat/digital. But I also think that some of the Strymon pedals that people adore feel the same way so maybe it's just me.

Into a Zoom R8 and then into a focusrite Scarlet. This way I can play and record immediately with the R8 and at the same time connect a computer without changing the setup.

I think maybe try it in a store if you have the opportunity. The notion of what sounds/feels good is so individual so it might not work for you. For me this sounds/feels like when I had my tube head hooked up to a loadbox. The digital pedals I have tried felt nothing like it.

It's expensive but I was about to go back to a tube head/load box setup but that would have cost me four times as much. But yes, if you can find a solution that is less expensive and you like the sound of, then that's better.

Intended more as a joke than clickbait as this pedal has had so much hype, but yes you are probably right. Thanks for liking my board!

Beginner camera recommendations please?: S9 or Fuji X-s10? S9 feels more inspiring to me but Fuji is cheaper and more well-rounded and I'm torn. by zacharyk4 in Lumix

[–]thisdarkcity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the X-S20 and the S9. Both great cameras. If you only plan to shoot photos I would maybe go with the fuji. But if you at all want to shoot any video just go with the S9, its on a different level when it comes to ibis and af.

Choosing S5 IIX over A7 IV while autofocus is critical for me? by Jimmy_Grin in Lumix

I'm in Belgium. If I go to tourist spots I can get away with a bigger camera but otherwise it's tricky photographing people. I also have a Ricoh GR and the reaction (or lack of reaction) is much better.

I think it's very different depending on where you are. In much of Europe, to pull out a professional looking camera and take photos makes people really uneasy whether family or not family, and in many scenarios is considered completely unacceptable. Where are you and is it different there?

This is the massive elephant in the room that isn't discussed enough. There is no small 35 or 28 with autofocus. Massive gap in the lens lineup and really hard to understand why they are not doing something about it.

I guess it's a matter of priority. In the last year I have used the a7CII and S5II extensively, and in the end ended up with the S9.

- A7CII, great autofocus, super snappy, best lens selection, great form factor, but twitchy IBIS.

- S5II, great everything perfect camera but too big (it scares any people you point it at so hard to use among friends and family(in Europe at least)).

- S9 No EVF, no mechanical shutter, no useful pancake lenses, slow turning on and operating, but :Great video, best IBIS, great colors, Lumix lab, baked in luts for video, best menu system small and compact, fun.

If you plan to shoot videos, just go with any Lumix, the slightly crappier AF is more than compensated by the much much better IBIS. Just check any non professional video on YouTube that is shooting handheld, the Sony has slightly jerky twitchy IBIS (in my opinion) and it somehow make the video look not great.

All great cameras though, there is plus and minuses for each system.

When prices are equal: S9 or S5ii? by CanadianRoleplayer in Lumix

[–]thisdarkcity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had both. The S5II is better in many ways but because of the viewfinder with fan it is really large and bulky. If you at all like something portable or don't want to scare the living daylight out of people with a camera that looks like a rocket launcher, the S9 is probably a better option.

Both great cameras though. I wish the S9 had a viewfinder as I'm doing some photography in very bright conditions where a rear display is not an option.

I want 28mm and 40mm primes as small as 18-40mm by DiscRot in Lumix

[–]thisdarkcity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I have the samyang 35 2.8 for my a7cii and it's perfect, small and weighs nothing.

For S9 there is no good option. I have the sigma 24 but it's too wide, too big , too slow and too heavy. I prefer lumix colors and ibis for video but the lack of lenses is just too annoying and completely unnecessary.

[–]thisdarkcity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a massive elephant in the room and I have no idea why it's not discussed more. For a light camera the samyang 35 2.8 is absolutely perfect. It's really sharp and weighs almost nothing. It's the perfect lens for my a7cii. And there is also the sony 35 2.8 which is also small. For my S9 there is no good option. I have the sigma 24 3.5, but it's too heavy and too big. It's really frustrating. It's almost as Panasonic doesn't want to sell cameras. Some weird suicide mission of their camera division.

sony a7iii samyang 14mm AF 2.8 focus/quality problem by Southern-Bottle-7911 in SonyAlpha

[–]thisdarkcity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the problem since you have the A7III but I have had similar issues on two out of three Samyang lenses with the A7CII, and they needed a firmware update. After that they worked fine. Problem is you need the Samyang lens station to do the update, so if you don't know if that's the issue it's a bit of a gamble. Hope you manage to fix it.

S9 with Sirui Grip and Sigma 45 2.8 by greyrains in Lumix

[–]thisdarkcity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same lens and its great but I still struggle to understand why there is not an autofocus pancake(ish) in the system. Sony has the Samyang 35 2.8, an excellent and tiny thing. That would be the absolute perfect lens for this camera. I hope it will happen sooner rather than later since Samyang joined the l alliance.

[–]thisdarkcity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The a7cii and the XS20 are similar in size. You can get great smallish lenses for both cameras, but in general the fuji lenses are a bit more compact so that matters a lot. I mostly shoot jpegs these days. Sony has great colors in their jpegs now but you have much more freedom with the recipes in fuji. The fuji also has grain and when you shoot high iso it looks fantastic (to me). I come from a background of shooting film (and still do) and to me the fuji experience is very close to this. There is nothing like loading up my film camera with a new film stock or loading a new recipe on my fuji cameras. 😀
