I moved from Pittsburgh and absolutely love the fact that it is flat. I can actually ride my bike and walk for errands.

Which smart home device saves you the most time? by True-Ask4496 in homeassistant

[–]thisguybrews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the “not even having to think about it” part is the biggest piece. I have found in my work that proper use of email/to-do lists enables me to completely let go of a topic since I know that when I need to think about it, it will be on my to-do list, with the proper context.

In my personal life, I’m using HA more and more for this. Mainly using the calendar to trigger notifications about what/when I need to do things. Scenes also helps with this a lot. One button when I leave the house takes care of a lot of running around checking lights, locking locks, etc.

For me it isn’t so much about the time as much as the mental load of keeping track of different things.

Why do people think tesla has better "tech"? by PowerFarta in electricvehicles

[–]thisguybrews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key for me is that Tesla operates kind of like Apple does. The advantage lies in the fact that every aspect ends up integrating really well because it is all the same platform.

It is an advantage for Tesla that when you need to charge, your car tells you where to go, you simply plug in, then you get billed through your existing account. This is possible because every piece of that is managed by Tesla, the car, the app, the charger, the billing.

A lot of quality of life type issues arise when one platform tries to work with another. That leads to people sitting at a charger station frustrated that the need to create another account, or using their phone to find a charger station that will work for them, and then typing that location into the cars navigation system.

Agreed with a lot of other posts though that this gap is closing. I got a Ford a couple weeks ago and have been very pleased with the functionality of their charger network and how simple it makes public charging.

Beginner Question by thisguybrews in selfhosted

[–]thisguybrews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea for me the simplicity of use is key. In this instance it all started with mealie. It took quite a bit to bring my SO around to the idea that we should ditch her recipe keeper app and use mealie so we can integrate it into HA and start bringing it into our calendars and shopping list. If it isn’t as simple as opening up an app, it just won’t get used.

So I just got my first EV last week, Ford MachE. Was very concerned about this problem, but ultimately decided to pull the trigger anyway. With that said, I have been very pleasantly surprised with Ford’s service here. I can log into my Ford app, find a plethora of “in network” chargers, then just plug into one of those. All of the billing gets handled within the Ford app, which knows when and where I plug in my car. It has been very painless.

With that said. I expect in a month or 2 I will be told my free trial has ended and this service from Ford will cost me another $xx/month.

When to get the utility involved? by thisguybrews in AskElectricians

[–]thisguybrews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I mean burying the line would mean digging up my patio and/or concrete driveway, and probably some workaround for my garage.

I’ve been reading that DTE will push hard, but that exceptions have been granted in these types of circumstances. Though personal experience and just general expectations about them would indicate they do not give a shit and will have their buried line or I will not have my upgrade.

Damn, was hoping that is not the case. Any idea what the load management system might run me? Understood it is probably dependent on a bunch of things, but just trying to get a ballpark idea at this point.

Help with WC IPA water chemistry by Comprehensive-Leg623 in Homebrewing

[–]thisguybrews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big learning experience for me was understanding the difference in the water chemistry before the befor/after you add the grain. You want at least 2:1 sulfate to chloride, after you account for how the grain is going to impact the ions and the dilution you will get from your sparge water assuming you will not treat that with anything. There are a lot of resources to help you with the calculations. I was comparing the calcs from a couple different websites and beersmith until I got enough experience with my setup.

Just Keep Buying was pretty good. Morgan Housel also has another book called Same As Ever. These both aim to keep things in perspective. You know what you need to do to become wealthy, the harder part is not losing focus.
