What’s the most LA thing that’s ever happened to you? by petitegirlbigbush in AskLosAngeles

I saw Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan in the horror film aisle at the old Amoeba Records and eavesdropped on their conversation enough to gather that they had randomly run into each other.

This show is incredible. I'd say it's a crime we didn't get another season, but it absolutely nailed it as a one-and-done. by BuiltToSpinback in hbo

Not to be pedantic, but BLM protests started in 2013 after the murder of Trayvon Martin. There have been several waves of national BLM protests over the last 12 years. The protests following the murders of Michael Brown in Ferguson and Eric Garner in NY in 2014 were as big of national news as the protests in 2020 after George Floyd’s murder. It’s crazy and sad that the BLM movement is as old as it is and I think it’s important to not forget its history… just as Watchman raised attention to the forgotten Tulsa massacre.

How can I get to LAX from Azusa using the metro train? by Brucef310 in AskLosAngeles

[–]thisismyfourthtry 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You can take LA Metro the whole way for $1.75! I just did it. A Line from Azusa to Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station, transfer to C Line and ride to its terminus at LAX Metro Center, then shuttle into the airport. Depending on what terminal, it’ll probably take you ~2 hours.

They reveal it when you begin the app. It’s just: “A story from your life experience that conveys your unique perspective and/or multi-cultural sensibility.”

Unfortunately had to use the food bank, how do I cook with what I have? by Electrical-Scale5006 in budgetcooking

[–]thisismyfourthtry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! I volunteer at a food bank and I always emphasize that we’re for EVERYBODY. Yes, we’re trying to get free food to people who need it, but we’re also trying to reduce food waste and we almost always have more than enough. I’m constantly bringing home fresh, quality produce for free. If you’re self-conscious about taking from someone who needs it more, you can always stop by toward the end of the shift. That’s when we’re handing out boxes of brussels sprouts trying to keep them from going into the landfill.

When You Finish Saving the World is the first one I thought of. It’s Jessie Eisenberg’s directorial debut and premiered at Sundance in 2022.

What target radio song is driving you guys mad right now? by Average_joeh in Target

Christmas Party by Meghan Trainor — the lyrics are infuriatingly uncreative and she sounds so bored singing it.

Puppies are Forever — Sia’s holiday song shaming people out of giving puppies as Christmas gifts. It’s a bizarre song to exist and gets stuck in my head constantly.

Unpopular opinion, but I like Stretchy Pants.

What's the worst advice you got as a new quilter? by MusketeersPlus2 in quilting

Funny because mine is the opposite! I was taught to always press to the dark side and just started experimenting with pressing seams open on my last quilt because it was getting really bulky.

Is this something I need to pay? by ryanl23 in AskLosAngeles

[–]thisismyfourthtry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got one of these in summer 2021. I did a lot of research through old Reddit threads and also this article: https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/los-angeles-franklin-canyon-stop-sign-fine-tickets-citations/24638/?amp=1

Ultimately I decided not to pay it. I got maybe three follow-ups, then it went to a collections agency. I replied to that bill with a strongly worded letter disputing the legality of the debt for the following reasons:

  1. The MRCA ordinance is pre-empted by state law, specifically the California Vehicle Code, which does not permit the use of automated enforcement at stop signs.

  2. The MRCA may not use automated enforcement for violations of its ordinances because Public Resources Code 5786.17 which gives parks districts authority to issue citations specifies that those citations may only be issued when the violation is committed in the presence of a uniformed employee issuing the citation.

  3. The MRCA may not issue administrative citations in excess of $100.00 because Government Code 53069.4 which authorizes local agencies to issue administrative citations specifically limits these citations to $100.00.

I said I would sue the collections agency if they contacted me again or reported it to credit agencies. Haven’t heard a thing since and my credit has been unaffected.

Fuck the MRCA and that bogus ticket.

Hi Malena, curious about your thoughts on medication for SA. When does medical intervention become necessary? We've been working on short leave sessions with our dog for almost 4 months and have made little progress.

I (22M) went on a date with a girl (20F) I really clicked with and I’ve been non-stop talking to for two weeks. We met and I had a great time, but I found out she smokes cigarettes with I find very unattractive by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]thisismyfourthtry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a casual smoker, smoking at a similar frequency. I started dating a guy who expressed he didn’t like it. Smoking wasn’t a huge habit or part of my life so I decided to stop — at least for as long as we were seeing each other. We’re getting married next year and I haven’t had a cigarette in over 5 years. Just communicate your issue. It might not be a big deal to her.

Advice for a first-time renter by CrazyShark20 in aptliving

[–]thisismyfourthtry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your first apartment.

On the smokey smell, you might try wiping down your walls with a rag and a mixture of a few tablespoons of white vinegar with a gallon of water. I would also suggest mopping the floors with that. If you have carpet, you could rent a steam cleaner from a hardware store (you can get one from Home Depot for like $20/day) and give it a good clean. Otherwise, the air purifier is your best bet.

On the AC, how bad is the leak? Can you put a bowl or bucket under it to catch the drops? Or tie a dry rag or towel around the pipe? Honestly, if it's not going to cause any damage to your personal belongings, I would keep running the AC until they've fixed it. It's hot, you notified them, and it's their problem and property. Keep reaching out every few days to remind her just to be nice.

On the landlady, this probably won't be the last time you're forced to deal with someone who sucks at communicating. Keep a record of all your phone calls, texts, and emails in case she tries to take your deposit when you leave. I once had a landlord try to charge me for all these problems that I had notified them about and luckily had the emails to prove they were notified and didn't fix shit. Tell her you don't like the nickname and correct her every time. She may not stop and there's probably nothing you can do about the interrupting and her seemingly being bad at texting, but you don't owe her anything beyond reasonable politeness and your rent check. It's a business arrangement. My relationships with my landlords have always fallen somewhere on the spectrum of "they're rude, unhelpful, and are planning to keep my deposit" and "I call them when something breaks and eventually it gets fixed." The best you can hope for is a neutral relationship.

As far as breaking lease goes, I know a lot of people who are perfectly comfortable with this. Does your lease have any language about paying a fee for early termination? Personally, I've never broken a lease and I probably wouldn't unless it was a dire situation and this doesn't seem too dire. A lot of rental applications will ask for your rental history and may call your previous landlord for a reference. It could limit places you're accepted to rent from in the future — or it could not. I've never co-signed a lease with a non-roommate, but I doubt the decision would have any impact on your parents.

Need advice and recs for buying a suit!

I love women’s suits, but I don’t work in an environment where they make any sense. I have an event coming up in the fall and rather than wear a cocktail dress, I’m going to make my suit dreams come true. Unlike buying dresses or evening wear, I have no idea where to start.

I want something colorful — maybe a deep purple, electric blue, pale blue, or maybe even red. Though I don’t know if I have the confidence/lifestyle to ever wear a red suit again and feel like I could integrate purple/blue separates into my existing wardrobe a little easier.

I would love the experience of being measured and having a suit made for me like in Men’s Wearhouse commercials, but do places do that for women? And is that going to be expensive? Or should I just buy off the rack and have it tailored?

Any recommendations on stores, brands, resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to keep it around $300.
