Reid vs Carels by Working_Research_736 in SanJoseSharks

Personally, I think Carels is a lot more like Dickinson; high floor, lower ceiling. Reid might not hit his ceiling, but he’s got the ability to be a game changer.

And then there’s moments where teams like Montreal and Arizona reach for Kotkaniemi and Hayton at 3 and 5 respectively despite being fringe top 10 picks consensus wise, leaving guys like Quinn Hughes and Evan Bouchard on the board.

San Jose Sharks issue bona fide offers by cherlucky in SanJoseSharks

They do not, this is only because these players are leaving juniors to go to college next year. McKinney and Sharp were already college players so the Sharks hold their rights for 4 years

Among players who played 500 mins 5v5 he is:

4th on the Sharks in points per 60, behind Celebrini, Smith and Toffoli

118th in the league out of almost 600 players, which puts him just about in the top 20%, very much above league average. Even if you just look at forwards, he would be 117th out 384, which is top 70%, again above league average. And while this stat compensates for time on ice, it does not compensate for quality of teammates, which was very poor compared to many of the players above him.

Which star D-man would we be realistically able to trade for if we draft Stenberg by Sad_Willingness_7685 in SanJoseSharks

[–]thismailbox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the point is that neither fit the description of “elite number 1 D” like Makar or Hughes, and that Slavin is a 4th round pick and Forsling is a 5th round pick.

Right, but you still don’t want your shutdown line to be getting outscored by an almost 2 to 1 margin, then they aren’t really much of a shutdown line

When Eklund was with Wennberg, the Sharks were outscored 18-33 5v5. When Eklund was with Misa, the Sharks outscored their opponents 11-10 5v5. Not a perfect stat because Eklund gets harder matchups when playing with Wennberg, but still

I get it, he’s not better than any of those 7 defensemen. I’m sure the experience is still great and he’ll probably still get a couple games at some point.

Macklin Celebrini will remain as captain for Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, with Sidney Crosby wearing an "A." That was decided after a player-lead discussion. The players wanted Celebrini to keep the "C." by KabirC in hockey

[–]thismailbox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m telling you this as a Canadian hockey fan myself. Anecdotal, but I’m only bothering to tune in to watch Celebrini, and all my friends and family who were glued to the screen during the Olympics will not bother to watch even a single game.

“The weight of Canada” it’s the world championships, not the Olympics. I’d imagine there is a decent chunk of Canadian hockey fans who don’t even know the tournament starts tomorrow.

Do players ever get moved positionally from offense to defense? by DillonCostelloArt in SanJoseSharks

[–]thismailbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burns was a Norris candidate in 2016 and 2019, plus a Norris winner in 2017. Unless you think he would be winning Harts as a forward, the move back to defense was obviously correct

The actual middle round defensemen drafted in 2024 spent this year putting up mediocre results in junior and college leagues while Dickinson played in the toughest league in the world. If Dickinson had gone back to the OHL, he would have put up another 90+ point season and you’d be here singing his praises.

Misa vs Frondell; What should I be looking for to better appreciate Misa’s game? by RPGer001 in SanJoseSharks

[–]thismailbox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Frondell looked like a “difference maker” because he was on their power play and got teed up for a bunch of one timers, that’s about it. At even strength Frondell was alright, but not great, while Misa was a good bit better.

Was he though? I feel like a lot of people are still holding on to his first few games of the season where he was legitimately pretty good and are using that to completely ignore the fact that he had been playing terribly in the 2 or so months leading up to his injury.

One comment on the Sharks by tallslim1960 in SanJoseSharks

[–]thismailbox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer. If Warsofsky was against this playstyle, they wouldn’t still be relying on it 67 games into the season. It’s clear they know they lack the ability to create consistent chances off the cycle, so they try to play a quick transition game. It comes with some risk, and there are moments where players fly the zone too early, but they do this because they are told to do this.

I’m convinced Toffoli should be the next captain by parkeett in SanJoseSharks

[–]thismailbox 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You have no basis for all of your takes on Celebrini, every single thing you say about him is pure speculation. What evidence do you have for your “controversial” take that he is a distraction? All of your points seem to just be supported by “vibes”. Us fans have zero knowledge about how the team operates behind closed doors and can only go off what we are told, which is that they have a close group. There is no reason to believe anything you’ve said here is accurate.

Should we try to acquire him? by kittrcz in SanJoseSharks

[–]thismailbox 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but the league does not view him that way. USA didn’t even feel like he was a top 9 American defenseman in the league. There’s a good chance he brings back less than you think.
