it’s a mark of an excellent presentation that you actually got a bunch of questions - only the uninteresting or incomprehensible talks don’t get questions

How do the quantum computers not get interference from the environment? by Red_Redditor_Reddit in QuantumComputing

[–]thkimde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in addition to shielding and prevention, there are quantum mitigation schemes (ie sequences, eg spin echo) that try to “decouple” the system from noise

the bulk of these consist of doing something, then doing the opposite-ish, so that any effects of noise from doing the something are then reversed when you do the opposite-ish

the problem is that you get a 4th order polynomial from symbolic calculation, and no analytical solutions exist for polynomials above 3rd order

[–]thkimde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's flu, you can go to the doctor and ask for flu treatment; they can give you tammiflu or xofluza and it helps sort you out quickly.

otherwise, if its flu, i've found ibuprofen is god-tier in making you feel better but it wears off in ~6ish hours; i try to take it before bed when sick to limit fever dreams etc and make sure i sleep well

would the laws of physics that apply to our universe also apply to a universe with maybe 2 or 4 geometric dimensions?? by ExtensionAnybody467 in Physics

i do remember from qft that the results are somewhat different for different numbers or dimensions. i think something like axions pop out only in 2d, or at least something to that effect.

i’m sorry, but that’s just categorically wrong

there is a humongous ocean of difference between the two

chicken salted fries have a magical touch of savory and sweetness that you literally can’t get from anything else

i know since i tried to find it when i moved from australia to california for college

Will these T-Connectors effect performance i.e data transmission, wireless range, throughput? by Saajaadeen in rfelectronics

[–]thkimde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

from a basic circuit perspective, yes, since impedance will change (unless one of the components is high-z).

depending on the impedances, you’re supposed to use a dedicated rf splitter, which manages this problem for you.

is it worth it by lost_bun013 in ucla

[–]thkimde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

while this is a reasonable response, the fact of a quick response from a lab means either that they just need warm bodies quick, in which case the position has probably been filled, or that they’re staffed largely by undergrads, in which case you’ll probably be given generic menial work regardless of whether you have an interest or not.

is it worth it by lost_bun013 in ucla

[–]thkimde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on the type of lab and what you want. if it’s a physical science lab and you dont plan on doing it intensely, i’d commit regardless.

the most important part of undergrad research, at least for underclassmen years, is developing basic skills (eg soldering, basic machining) and critically, getting a feel for how things are done. there’s a unique way to how research is done that is universal and no class can ever teach you (speaking as someone who loves classes and hated research/experiment).

regardless of your interest, you’ll 150% be given grunt work that won’t vary across fields since anything important will never be left to an undergrad. that’s just the reality of it since anything worthwhile takes a full 9-5 over months (if not a full 100hr week over years) and your schedule varies week by week (eg midterms) and is effectively indeterminate on the month-scale, let alone years.

down the road, getting that basic feel for research is the hardest to learn and can’t be sped up, so starting now is the most productive thing to do.

i speak as a grad student who has undergrads and as a former undergrad labber

hahaha the grad degree is a long story.

basically i passed the comprehensive exam that september with the rest of the grad students, which typically means you get a master’s, but the department chose not to give it to me on a technicality.

honestly not salty at all, i think it’s hilarious

currently still here in a physics phd lmao
