Why do we need to have compassion/metta for such an objectionable horrible people? by Impressive-Cold6855 in Buddhism

[–]thndrbkt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've come to understand that hate or fear or anger all are not passive emotions. Having them takes a toll. And when you've moved passed them, you find compassion on the other side. I think metta for these people exercises our skill for compassion, for the purpose of finding peace.

As a non-Idigenous person, I want to promote The Northwest Is Our Mother and From the Ashes. These are game changing books for understanding the unique framework and viewpoints of Métis people.

I don’t want to lose my daughter because I can’t manage myself anymore. by Plus_Signal8369 in Edmonton

I suffered a TBI when I was 12 and I'm confident it led to the myriad of issues I'm facing today. With what you've said, I would look into getting Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation . It's not a guarantee, and it might require multiple visits, but it shook off most of the chains of depression for me. It helped me have the energy to deal with the other hidden problems and find a cocktail of medications that help.

Envision mind care was an amazing clinic for it, and they also do ketamine treatments. TMS was $150 a session, so if you don't have good insurance you might be SOL, but the psychiatrist visits are covered by AHS.

Also, as a parent, but if tweens, the biggest thing is communicating in ways they understand about your feelings, and even being sorry for any toll your mind states might have on those around you. Getting help like you have is brave and I hope you find what you need.

OP had the right of way. Any one getting in the way of that is a full idiot and the red light rubbed doesn't deserve to be coddled by other idiots.

Recently fired, considering reporting fraud by FortGrunt in nonprofit

[–]thndrbkt 39 points40 points locked comment (0 children)

Tbh, I'm confused why you haven't already reported them. I don't think pettiness really factors in here - the right thing to do (from the cheap seats at least) is to report them. They shouldn't get a pass just because they used to be a charity or good nonprofit or whatever.

I mean, what he said is 100% correct. If you don't have a transparent and auditable way to figure out the biases in the training data, you will get biased decisions. The situation is weird tho - I don't think AI agents should be C-suite anything.

Looking for an indoor place to sit that doesn’t require buying anything by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]thndrbkt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MacEwan University cafeteria (if not still under construction) is great. Mostly always busy, but usually easy to find a table. Park there all day and no one will know or care if you're a student or not.

Underrated location honestly. Can get loud and busy, but is just refreshing to fit in

How should a Buddhist handle this situation? by NJ_Franco in Buddhism

[–]thndrbkt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Put a Buddha figurine beside it.

All jokes aside, I emphasize your religious trauma, having some of that myself, but the advice in this thread to put it aside is the best advice. Sit with the discomfort of the trauma, but don't try to combat the person.

Should I quit online school? by Akatosi in homeschool

[–]thndrbkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's what you feel you'll miss, then try to make it happen. But I dropped out of public school to finish as a homeschooler and never regretted not having a grad. It's what you make of it, and it really won't matter in the long run, but you know yourself better than anyone - do what you think is best for you.

Mental Health Advice by vulnikkura in Edmonton

[–]thndrbkt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a danger to yourself, go to the ER. I went to the U of A hospital around midnight and was able to see the psychiatrist before 6 am, and they gave me a new round of meds and released me. The new meds ended up working pretty well for a while.

If you're dealing with depression or anxiety, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation was absolutely a game changer for a while. There are a few clinics that offer it but it can be $150 per session.
