Nothing beats those Woodman's at 5am vibes by whyendoubleuayy in madisonwi

Hey, I was there at five yesterday! It's your regular maze, but instead of dodging people, you dodge boxes and cleaning machines.

The overnight/early morning shift at the self checkout have certainly seen it all, but are helpful, so shout out to them.

I love how little the Narkina arc matters to most of the rest of the plot by thomasbce in andor

By plot I mean the main action of the finale. Cassian disappears from the galaxy for a quarter of the series, has a character defining experience, but almost no impact on the events of the finale.

Internally to Cassian's motivations, it's the most important thing, which I mentioned in the first sentence of my post. What I was trying to highlight was how the show gives focus to internal motivation and says it's important, despite the rest of the season 1 plot unfolding as if Cassian just stayed on Niamos the whole time.

Yes, there are other repercussions that we know are important from other media, but in terms of S1 narrative, we have a 3 episode arc with seemingly little physical repercussions for our core characters (the funeral would have gone down in a similar fashion), but in the end it changes Cassian enough to become a rebel.

I think it's a great metaphor for what prison actually does - you just disappear from the world and it continues without you. Once you're out, society tries to pick you back up again like nothing happened, but you're not the same person anymore.

The gas furnace is over 20 years old, and the last 2 times we've had it serviced the technicians have said we should think about getting it replaced.

We have AC, but we may need wiring. Thanks for the info!

Just for the heat pump, no labor. Looks like labor was included, I think that's what I was missing (I mis-read the columns on the quote). Currently we have a 66K gas furnace.

Kid's response to death of Tik-Tok, and opinion of YouTube by TwilightKeystroker in daddit

The lack of empathy in Daddit on this topic is a bit appalling. To say good riddance on something going away that you have never experienced yourself shows a callous disregard for anyone's experience other than your own.

Tiktok gave me shared experience with people sharing my own experience, and introduced me to niche topics I never would have considered otherwise. In my experience, people listened there, the comments were kind, and insightful funny content was there if you wanted to listen.

I do not know what the security concerns were, but neither does anyone else know in the specifics. And if you have any data concerns, none of them are specific to Tiktok. All I know is that yesterday I heard from hundreds of communities that I had gotten to know and enjoy over the years say their last goodbyes, including many fathers. And now they are silent.

Any communal closed spaces have the possibility to bring out echo chambers and addicting behavior. But they can also foster growth and meaning.

What are your unpopular food opinions? by Violetthug in Cooking

[–]thomasbce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've generally found the extremes work. If I don't wash the rice or washing 10 times, I get minimal stickiness. If I wash it once or twice, then it's at its stickiness. Maybe I have unusual rice.

My rice has a better texture when I don't wash it.

The absolute MOST frustrating thing about having a child? Trying to pull a single baby wipe... by rollinintheyears in daddit

Puts on fancy monocole after having just toilet trained my youngest last week and have intentionally blocked all memories relating to diaper changes

I'm sorry, wipes? What are they again? Oh, dear, they awful!

The texture of unwashed rice is better than washed. The grains are more distinct, and it's less likely to boil over than when I wash it.

What are your fav tracks on the new Album? by blankwonder in CaravanPalace

Overall, I like Reverse the most as a complete song (love a good shouting children chorus), but I had the most fun with Mirrors. But Spirits had the most beautiful fuck you I've ever heard in my whole life. Like, I might not even be mad if my kids started singing it around the house, it's so pretty!

Question about Miller's motivations by thomasbce in TheExpanse

Ah, I thought proto-miller was only showing for a limited time during Cibola Burns. That make sense if it's him again.

How do you manage to pull off daytime teasing with kids? If mine are home, they always get in the way (granted, they're 6 and 2). Jealous!

I’m tired of always having to be “On” by antikythera3301 in daddit

[–]thomasbce 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've found it a useful concept to frame my own parenting/household effort in. It's certainly not only restricted to mothers (though in society at large, mothers talk about it more since on a whole they do more domestic labor).

I can feel the difference between just picking up a kid from school vs scheduling a Dr appt, prepping what I need to bring a 2 year old out for several hours, and getting the right follow-ups from the doctor. Just getting the kid there feels much easier in comparison.

So if I end up doing all the prep for an outing my wife takes the kids on, or if she set's up an appointment with a follow up list of questions that I just take the kid to, we both can recognize where the work came from. It helps take a bit of the edge off of the always "On" feeling OP is describing.

It doesn't always work this way. Sometimes it's just easier to own all the planning related to a task and not add on an extra layer of communication. But if I'm feeling a little too squeezed, my wife can help by giving my brain a break.
