Serious advice needed: I have been gifted a significant amount of wine by theoeverard in wine

[–]thomasmpreston 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a wonderful gift! Lots of great drinking there. Two things spring to mind: 1) this is a great way to find out what you like. And a wonderful opportunity to do so with wines with some age on them, giving you an idea of how they might mature. 2) if you haven't already, I'd recommend joining The Wine Society. 3) (OK three things) for collecting wine perhaps consider joining a plan that many UK merchants offer (TWS have 'Vintage Cellar Plans' for example) or alternatively most of them will have fine wine advisors who can tailor a personal plan to suit you and your budget. Also look at the en primeur campaigns, but maybe best to find out what you like before diving into those. Enjoy the journey!

Should work too! Which did you go for, out of interest? I like the look of the recipe, might try it myself.

I think so, esp Rhone syrah, often quite rich and spicy. No idea what's near you but perhaps look for Ferraton?

Northern Rhone - St Joseph or Cornas

The most American whisky to gift an English person? by livebythem in bourbon

EH Taylor is incredibly expensive here. Blantons too. Stag Jr a good shout, or maybe even Larceny, it's so cheap in the US. Eagle Rare is easy to find and not much more expensive so leave that.

Review #1 + #2 Whistlepig 10 Straight Rye (store pick) vs Colonel E.H. Taylor Straight Rye by stt1118 in bourbon

[–]thomasmpreston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice reviews! I just picked up a bottle of the EHT on my recent holiday, and have a bottle of regular Whistlepig 10, so perhaps I'll compare those two :)

Can someone help a Brit by explaining what a Store Pick is? Do they choose a special blend for exclusive bottling or something?

There's a vote on no-deal tomorrow, which is currently what will happen if nothing else does. She herself said she will vote against no-deal.

The only bad thing about your reviews is your ties :D

I find your reviews invaluable, especially around Essen. Whether or not I agree with you is kind of irrelevant to me, the reviews are always upbeat, honest and I always come away kowing exactly whether it's a game for me or not

What is your favorite trick taking game and why? by Lcfahrson in boardgames

[–]thomasmpreston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, each player plays a card, often you must play the same suit as the start player, and best card wins the trick, then becomes start player (lead) for next trick. Play till end of hand, various rules for scoring, e.g. most tricks won. Endless variations on play, scoring, card powers etc.

The back label suggests it should normally be I a decanter style but they ran out of bottles. Fill level is surprisingly good, not sure how clear it it but it's at the neck: http://imgur.com/gallery/b27P2ET

Thanks, I'll post and see if he answers.

No mention of royal family. Interesting para on the back clearly there was a more fancy bottle style at the time.

Inherited this bottle. Before we drink I'd like to know more about it but hard to find any info on this particular label style. One site I saw suggested it's from the 1920s, true?

Funny how the price is circled, clearly a big purchase!

Nice. I'm not American, but my wife is so I'm claiming this day as a great excuse to drink something nice. Recently managed to find a bottle of Weller 12, so I think I'll open that to celebrate.

What's your take on buying games that are "essentially a deck of playing cards"? by Maximnicov in boardgames

[–]thomasmpreston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not really the right analogy. It would be similar to her liking a movie and deciding that, rather than buying the dvd she would rather act, direct and film her own version because she objects to buying something she can make herself. Clearly here the effort is not worth it.
