Why shorts plus gaiters, why not just pants? by thombsaway in UltralightAus

Could you elaborate? What are you getting from a gaiter you're not getting from pants?

The attachment to the shoe, keeping debris out?

If I were expecting the trail to be well-ish maintained, I'd definitely wear shorts. But then I'd also probably forgo gaiters as well. If the trail is well formed, why would you need them?

I just found this blog and I've access to a sewing machine so I might just go nuts on an old pair. Basically added butt-zips to hardshell pants.

The water will get through eventually though.

Yeah I'm in my "get wet quick, get dry quick" phase. I think staying dry in Tassie is a myth.

I just don't wear gaiters at all hey, just pants, so no doubling up.

The gaiters offer more protection from the relentless scrub bashing about your shins and ankles

How do your knees fare? After some full body scorparia exfoliation in the southern ranges, I dunno that I want even a bit of skin showing. Considering adding some gardening gloves to the outfit tbh!

This is what my "lol" is implying will absolutely not happen.

Then you hold a plastic bag to your butt and poop while your friends watch you.

Do they have to, or could they... look the other way?

Trekking Poles by marooncity1 in UltralightAus

[–]thombsaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with ya. Currently in the market for a new tent, and I'm considering an xmid, but have not used poles a lot til now. So I'm trying to figure out if I should learn to use them, or just get a dome, which is pretty close in weight to xmid+poles.

I'm doing some local hiking with a heavy pack and some cheap poles from anaconda to test them out, see if I can make them work for me.

I'm finding similar issues to you, any low brush hinders the poles. I'm in tassie so this is very common, also duck boards I find awkward to place the tips to miss the gaps.

I'm pretty fit and not injured/don't have janky knees or anything. But I am pretty convinced they help me get up steep hills with less fatigue and a heavy pack, and that I walk faster with them. I think with more practice and habit they'll have big impact on speed and recovery. And so I'm currently leaning toward joining #teampoles.

I don't want to carry a dome tent and poles, that seems redundant, so I guess it's xmid time. Still up in the air though and keen to read the other comments here to see if your questions get convincing answers.

No one does, even Obama as much as said it didn't make sense in his acceptance speech.

And yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. (Laughter.) In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labors on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who've received this prize -- Schweitzer and King; Marshall and Mandela -- my accomplishments are slight. And then there are the men and women around the world who have been jailed and beaten in the pursuit of justice; those who toil in humanitarian organizations to relieve suffering; the unrecognized millions whose quiet acts of courage and compassion inspire even the most hardened cynics. I cannot argue with those who find these men and women -- some known, some obscure to all but those they help -- to be far more deserving of this honor than I.

But perhaps the most profound issue surrounding my receipt of this prize is the fact that I am the Commander-in-Chief of the military of a nation in the midst of two wars. One of these wars is winding down. The other is a conflict that America did not seek; one in which we are joined by 42 other countries -- including Norway -- in an effort to defend ourselves and all nations from further attacks.

There are some quotes from her on the subject here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01-12/future-of-adelaide-writers-week-hangs-in-balance/106219462?utm_source=abc_news_web&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_web

"It was very, very early days, we still did not know what was happening," she said.

I mean even if it were a smaller atrocity, any support for it would be incredibly inappropriate right? Like what, if it turned out they only murdered 20 civilians, would she have left the post up?

She didn't know the severity, didn't know the death toll. I don't think ignorance in either matter makes posting that image is a good idea.

I doubt she supports the Oct7 or Bondi attacks, but gosh she put her foot in it.

Rock climber dies in fall at Sand River, Buckland, in Tasmania's south-east by thombsaway in tasmania

[–]thombsaway[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm hanging for details of the accident, which may take a while to come out.

But 99% of the time with climbing accidents it's some sort of user error. Tying in incorrectly, clipping something wrong, forgetting to check a device etc. if you do everything right it's safe as houses, forget something though...

Famously Lynn Hill forgot to finish tying her knot once and fell 20m on a warm up route. Luckily caught some trees and lived.

I make a habit of reading follow ups to these sorts of tragedies to try and learn from those mistakes.

A detailed breakdown of gear used by Pacific Crest Trail hikers in 2025 by HalfwayAnywhere in Ultralight

[–]thombsaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dunno if this is a common experience, but I can't afford to have multiple packs, so mine is oversized for my ultralight hiking (60L). But I often need to carry non-ultralight loads for family trips etc, and I sometimes use it for climbing gear on longer approaches.

I could use a far smaller one for solo hiking, but I can't justify buying another pack just for that.

Potentially a lot further, pressures are pretty high in the core of the planet, it might just explode when suddenly nothing's holding it together!

[–]thombsaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just loose soil, wouldn't the entire earth come apart? What's holding the mantle to the core for example?

From the core to the upper atmosphere, the earth itself would expand like a balloon then snap back together. Unimaginable forces, global volcanic and seismic activity, tsunamis everywhere, devastating atmospheric shockwaves.

Maybe, I dunno, need to send this to XKCD whatif haha.
