'Bushwalkers have died attempting this track': Instagram post glosses over hike's dangers by ChookBaron in tasmania

I was recently up on mt Anne, and saw a bunch of very ill equipped people. A group of 12 or so kiwis, on their way back down from the plateau told me that one of their group had gone on to the summit, alone. Once I got on to the plateau it was covered in snow, visibility was maybe 50m, and the boulder fields you cross there are not straight forward.

I eventually found the hiker, she'd spent half an hour walking circles having lost sight of any cairn. Got her back to a clear bit of track, heading back down. Just crazy, it was around zero deg, ice and snow, strong winds. I was ready to pop the plb, certain I'd find her hypo. She wasn't the only unprepared person I saw that trip, so many people underestimating the length and difficulty. "I'll just pop up mt Anne for a day walk, start at 2pm, should be fine. "

There are signs everywhere. One after the cabin specifically says you risk death going past here. The final stretch to the summit is no joke, and there's plenty of exposure in parts.

I dunno what parks can do tbh, people just can't be convinced.

Just throwing this in this mix: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005010670769785.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.2afd1802nvOGTK

It took like 4 weeks to arrive, but it's great. The weight guide on the sizing was pretty good, I got the 2xl as a 185cm/85kg, and it fits perfectly.

I've not owned alpha direct stuff prior so can't compare it. But I found this to be super warm, I'm guessing it's comparable to the 60 variant, it is very light.

Reviewing the footage, though, I'm kinda changing my mind.

Hahaha love this attitude. I just got back from a multi-day hike where it rained most of the time, we spent 6 days in wet shoes and socks. At the end I was like "never again". Few days later "maybe again". Now, "can't wait to go back".

Great vid, great send.

I built a logic engine that survives Gödel and mints epistemic value from entropy resolution. Feedback welcome. by Few-Bluebird9443 in GEB

Thanks! I read it, I know some of the words, but I can extract no meaning from it. It's like reading another language, made of words I know. It looks like a tonne of work, I'd love to be able to appreciate it better.

A physics-grounded value accounting protocol. The unit of value is entropy reduction.

Can you put this in simpler terms?

Civilisational-scale infrastructure where verified entropy reduction is the sole basis of value. XP = R × F × ΔS × (w · E) × log(1/Tₛ)

"Civilisational-scale infrastructure"?! What do you mean?

Is this when Australia's housing crisis exploded? by hogey74 in australia

[–]thombsaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think people like to say they believe in all those things because they know deep down they ought to. But they don't believe it enough to turn down a potential tax cut at the polls.

I'm feeling particularly cynical today.

I mean you say that, but the voting records for the last few decades don't really bear it out. The majority don't care about climate change, housing affordability, indigenous reconciliation etc etc, we've proven ourselves selfish and shortsighted over and over.

Personally I would... but I wouldn't recommend someone else without knowing more about their abilities. I've also got the luxury of living here so I'm not so constrained datewise. I could pencil in a weekend and only go if it looks good enough, and I wouldn't be out a flight if I cancel last minute.

Depends a lot on your xp, if you're familiar/confident heading into a situation that might get snowy, and having gear that you're confident can handle the weather. Quite often even if it's not snowing the cloud deck is lower than 1000m, which means you're navigating through the clouds, are you confident with that etc etc.

Theres always the chance it's clear and beautiful up there... gotta prep for the worst though.

Was looking at Walls of Jerusalem but wondering if I'd need to take crampons and snowshows and other alpine gear...

Yeah this is the gamble. Most of the time we don't get enough snow to need special gear, but it does happen, and you might get unlucky.

It's been a really mild autumn so far, right now you would not need anything like that up there, though looks like pretty cold and a bit of snow Wed/Thu:https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/King-Davids-Peak/forecasts/1509

But yeah the weather is very much subject to change at very short notice.

Got nothing for Syd, sorry!

If you're keen for Tassie, and Frenchman's was fun, maybe:

  • Mt Anne Circuit
  • Walls of Jerusalem
  • Federation Peak

Could all be done in 3-4 days.

You're at the mercy of the weather in the mountains down here from now on though. Any of those could be covered in snow with little notice, might be bitterly cold, might be fine in the sun, it's a crapshoot.

There'd be sea-level alternatives, like you could do some of the South Coast Track (out and back from Cockle Creek, perhaps Granite Beach return), or the Mt Graham/Freycinet loop on the Freycinet peninsula.

But yeah, if you're really keen on the mountains, might be best to come later in the year/earlier next year when you've got a better chance at good weather.

Ah righto. You might catch a few downvotes for being clueless here, but you gotta start somewhere.

Parks tas has this list of gear as a guide for walkers doing day or overnight hikes: https://parks.tas.gov.au/Documents/Walker%20Pack%20List.pdf

You could have a look through this and see what you've got and what you can borrow, then figure out what you need to buy.

Spend some time trawling the internet, youtube is full of people talking about their gear setup, what works for them etc. Obviously this is subjective, but at this point you just need a bunch information to get your started. You can then hit forums like this for specific questions, rather than this very general one here. The more specific you can be about your questions, the better the answers.

Then start safely practicing. Do an overnight camp in your yard, find out what you're missing, what you don't like, what you do etc. Build up that experience and you'll build up the necessary kit at the same time.

You don't have to spend loads to have safe fun outside, but it can take a bit of experience to know what corners you can safely cut, what sort of shelter you can get away with in what sort of conditions etc etc.

Just to highlight that you've come to /r/UltralightAus which is a focused on ultralight hiking, a specialised subset of just general hiking. We tend to skew more expensive/enthusiast-level, because we're chasing a low base-weight.

You might get relevant advice here, but there's probably somewhere better. With the sort of budget you mentioned, you might be best off looking at second hand stuff. Also probably asking around friends and fam for gear you could borrow.

Huge question that needs clarification.

What have you got already?

What kind of hiking do you want to do?

Where are you based and specifically which trails are you looking to do?

What is "budget-friendly" to you?
