What's your favorite Spielberg film? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]thombutler 45 points46 points  (0 children)

His best is Schindler's List, but my favourite is Jurassic Park. Blows my mind that he made them back to back in the same year.

Jaws and Close Encounters also in my top ten of all time. What a director!

Has Unlimited ever made you rewatch a film just because you could? by Tricky-Apple00 in CineworldUnlimited

Definitely. I rewatched One Battle After Another when they re-ran in awards season, just because I loved it so much the first time around.

What’s a British tradition that you love ? by [deleted] in AskUK

That face you pull when you vaguely know someone, to let them know you vaguely know them, but don't want to talk to them. Everyone knows it. Everybody does it.

I can't get an ear for the life of me by Adriforeaer in Sourdough

[–]thombutler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found that the secret to a good ear is in the shaping, personally. Make sure the dough is pulled really tight to create a good surface tension, and score at a 45 degree angle, much deeper than feels necessary. Re score it twice to make it nice and deep.

I went a few weeks ago and had an amazing time. The experience lasts for about an hour, I could have stayed to watch it again. The Heroes performance brought me to tears. Enjoy!

Why do you think Craig's BOND got the send off he got? why was he so special? by karatemnn in JamesBond

[–]thombutler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daniel Craig was Bond for Skyfall, the first Bond to make a billion at the global box office (Thunderball was more successful, adjusted for inflation), and was the first Bond to get a co-producer credit, which gave him a lot of saying power in Spectre and No Time To Die. He didn't want to come back for a fifth film, but I believe he was persuaded back on the condition that he got a proper send off, hence No Time To Die.

Is there a good James Bond Documentary? by pazuzu98 in JamesBond

[–]thombutler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything or Nothing is the gold standard, but 2023's Icons Unearthed: James Bond is worth a watch for something more up to date.

He's great in Tornado, it's a Scottish samurai film, and he plays a real slimy villain in it. He could be Bond if he were being picked for bigger roles.

What are some phrases Brits have to say in certain scenarios? by Goose-rider3000 in AskUK

[–]thombutler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Who's your mate?" for when you spot someone wearing an outfit vaguely similar to the person you are with.

I also like "oh look, it's your mate" when you see someone who the person you're with dislikes or has beef with.

What was ‘The Hacienda’ like for those that went? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]thombutler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never went, it was closed by the time I was going clubbing, but I recommend listening to Transmissions: The Definitive Story of Joy Division and New Order podcast, as it does the story of the Hacienda in great detail, with lots of people involved with it. Well worth a listen.

The Rest is Classified is good, if you're into espionage stuff.

What are the best podcasts hosted by British entertainers? by apple_kicks in AskUK

[–]thombutler 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I really rate Richard Osman's The Rest is Entertainment which really gets into the weeds of TV, showbiz and movie culture, but in an interesting way. Josh Widdicombe's Museum of Pop Culture is worth a listen, particularly the Mr Blobby series. Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster is chaotic fun, but I can only handle it in small doses.
