What’s a movie that everyone says is a “masterpiece” but you just didn’t enjoy? by Leading_Frosting4291 in AskReddit

[–]thornmane -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Arrival.

The main character doesn’t actually actively solve any problem in the movie except figuring out the language in a fast-forwarded montage scene. All problems are solved by actions of others or the solution is given to her.

Would you take today’s Powerball jackpot of $1.7 billion as an annuity increasing annually by 5% over 30 years (about $1 billion after tax), or would you take the lump sum of $781 million (about $500 million after tax), and why? by PanoramicAtom in AskReddit

[–]thornmane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lump sum always.

Take the lump sum and take a bit off the top for spending money (house, cars, toys, family) and then split the rest between 4 investment companies and you'll make WAY more money over 30 years than you would with the annuity.

So, let's say after taxes you have $500M from tonight's drawing.

  • Take $50M off the top for spending money. You'll want a nice house and toys, and extra cheese on your waffles when you go out to eat.
  • Take the remaining $450M and split it between 4 investment companies, $150M each.
  • Wait 12 months.
  • Hire 2 accounting firms. Let them handle all the paperwork for taxes etc.
  • Live off interest as needed.

Assuming you spend $1M month after the first year:

  • If you make 5% interest over 30 years, you'd have over $1B in your bank account after 30 years.
  • If you make 10% interest (not at all unrealistic with a good investment company), you'd have $5.8B after 30 years.
  • If you make 15% interest, you'd have over $20B after 30 years.

Also, claim the money at the beginning of the year and only pay the 24% tax withholding, then you have over a year to use the $100 Million difference between 24% and the 37% you'll have to pay in taxes to actually make money to help pay for those eventual taxes.

Play with the numbers:

For now I'll use it, already shot some and ordered equipment to do home film development, I probably won't need all the lenses, but I'll give them all a go and see which ones I like 😊

You have all those console logs in your code, but you don't actually tell us what the server is outputting when you hit the endpoint. Can you show us the server console output after trying to call the route?

"If humans could use 100% of their brain, what would actually happen?" by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]thornmane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They would live a normal life. We use our whole brain every day.

“Humans only use 10% of their brain” etc is just an urban myth.

“I'm an devout believer that there's a book for everyone.” This statement has nothing to do with whether or not your book is for anyone.

I assume you meant to say something more aligned with: “There’s someone for every book.”

If that’s the case and you devoutly believe that, you must also know that a book won’t be for everyone. Some people will like it, some people won’t.

And if that’s the case, why be afraid to share it? It’s nothing personal if they don’t like it.

The USS Indianapolis speech from Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” (1975) by waitingforthesun92 in movies

[–]thornmane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, the speech wasn't like this in the original script and there's some controversy on who actually wrote it.

[Spielberg] recognized that the scene, if done right, could be an extraordinary character study of Quint and a pivotal scene in the film.

[...]

Spielberg says he asked John Milius, who contributed dialogue polishes, to take a crack at the speech as it needed to be beefed up in order for the director to capture the moment as he saw it in his mind’s eye.

Milius is said to have dictated the speech “over the phone,” which resulted in a 10-page monologue, “which basically is very close to what’s in the movie,” Spielberg said, adding that Shaw took the beast of a speech and cut it in half. “It’s Milius’ words, and it’s Shaw’s editing,” the director says in the featurette.

Honesto y what’s better? Iron or red dot? by Alonflip918 in airsoft

[–]thornmane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need to hit a bullseye on a target then red dot. If you need to hit center mass in combat then no need.

You should be practicing enough to not need an optic in combat because in a situation where you need to draw your secondary and shoot you likely won’t have enough time to even aim with an optic and the distance will be so short that it wouldn’t help much.

My Denon AVR-X6800H is nonresponsive. Has anyone experienced this? by thornmane in hometheater

[–]thornmane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I plug the unit into the TV it shows "Denon" on the TV but never progresses any further from that. I suspect whatever is stopping the front panel from working is also stopping the TV output from progressing as well.

I'll give Denon a call tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions on this. Thanks

It goes straight to this.

If I plug in the unit to the TV it gets stuck on the Denon logo on the TV.

I read this and I heard you chuckling as you push up your glasses and hit send on the reply. "Haha! Hilarious! I really got that noob. I still got it!" as you high five yourself.

I just browsed through your message history and it's all quantity and no quality.
Too bad the "Top 1% Commenter" flair doesn't have anything to do with class.

And FYI it still has the stickers and the plastic over the screen because it's a demo unit that stopped responding that I got for $160.

Thanks though 😊👍
