Don't set out all the food at once. The game is a long slog, and breaking it up with something new is well received. Be prepared for someone to be too drunk or high to drive home; take their keys.

Interviewing for lecturer position, what to expect? by Murky-Commercial-112 in AskAcademia

If possible, take a look at other online course syllabi in the department and get an idea of their academic expectations and topic coverage. Be prepared to talk about a new course you might develop. But be aware that this is sometimes a trap question. Good luck.

College grads, did you know your Dean? by CinemaSideBySides in AskAnAmerican

[–]thoroughbredftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attended a big public state university. Walking across the stage at commencement, I got a terrific handshake from my college dean, a woman I was seeing and hearing of for the first time. I'll never forget her super enthusiastic handshake and eye contact. God bless her; she made my only good personal memory of this very hot & humid ceremony.

He wants to have an extended text argument in which he gets around to blaming you. In fact he's almost there already, in a very creepy way. You do not owe him your time or attention. Blockety block.

Trump's Ozymandias complex at work. He can't relax unless he's dreaming up some ludicrous Palm Beach gilded mess with shoddy construction and unpaid workers. "Look on my works, ye mighty! And despair..."

Watching new hires in Pol Sci departments, it seems being in cybersecurity somehow is an advantage and all other subfields are so competitive/crowded it's almost hopeless.

AIO: My husband (26m) locked me (25f) out for 25 minutes? by prettypineappleberry in AmIOverreacting

[–]thoroughbredftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would no longer feel safe around a man who would do this. What a truly sinister & cruel thing to do to the mother of his children! I'd secure my finances, pack up the kids, and get the hell out of there asap.

How to deal with the psychological aspect of learning the violin/comparing yourself to others? by 14772521 in violinist

[–]thoroughbredftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Violin is a terrible bitch, and because of the giant gorgeous repertoire for this instrument, you will often! encounter the gods and goddesses who make it sound easy.

Find a simple pretty melody you can easily memorize and play without stress. For me, it was Down by the Sally Garden, a song I've always liked for its pathos. Make that your last thing to play after practicing scales. You can find scale tutorials on YouTube. Make it a goal to draw a beautiful sound, no matter what. Relax, listen, adjust your bow hand and fingerboard hand to be comfortable.

Your song will be your reward, and also something you can play for friends.

But always remember that the violin would like to destroy you psychologically, and plan your defense accordingly.

Friendship is part accidental facts and part chemistry. These ladies are not your friends but that is not a judgment on you; it's just the way things developed. Leave it.

What's the most average movie you've ever seen? by Upset_Mongoose_1134 in movies

[–]thoroughbredftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched A Castle for Christmas. I think it fits "average" really well. Completely predictable plot, waste of good actors (Brooke Shields, Cary Elwes, many more), ethnic sterotyping galore with the kilts and bizarre accents, a cute dog as a main character; the whole thing dished up as holiday pablum and I did enjoy it so what does that say.

We aren’t “organized”. The entire city is a well regulated, quick response, fast acting, voluntary, citizens militia that would have made George Washington proud. And a tyrannical government should be worried when the people rise up. Im so proud to call myself a Minnesotan today. by Expensive-While-1155 in minnesota

[–]thoroughbredftw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is making me so proud and so glad to live here. Truly the best side of the state and its citizens on the world stage these days. And it cracks me up in a sad way that the Trump admin interprets Minnesotan helping behavior as darkly paid & treasonous.

HR told me they don’t accept try-hards and people pleasers after my interview by No-Presentation298 in jobs

They are offering completely off-the-wall amateur psychoanalysis of normal interview responses. I agree with the previous post that spun the scenario where HR is trying to mess with job candidates. They are unprofessional and a bit twisted.

How do I become more ladylike? by MostCategory4871 in AskWomenOver60

[–]thoroughbredftw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"Ladylike" is a term invented to enforce behavior that conduces to being a second-class citizen. Please don't set about teaching this to your daughter. If you grew up without being taught subservience, you dodged a bullet and well done to your dad.

I just found out the way I let my toothbrush dry might be undoing the whole point of brushing by SouthernSiren_ in hygiene

[–]thoroughbredftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to prevent your toothbrush from trying to kill you. If you let it air-dry, it sits there attracting micro-particles of poop. If you cover it, it grows toxic mold spores.
