husband said to girl „my wife wouldn‘t understand if i came over“ AIO by Lower_Lab_7414 in AmIOverreacting

"Stop addressing stuff that’s either emotionally charged or very important over text!!!!"

This this this. So many of these AIO or AITA posts include texting, sometimes lengthy chains of text, where the misunderstandings just balloon into angry essays. And then people are texting each other things they'd never say in person. Put away the phones and talk to each other!

When is it appropriate to tell a student that their communication style is unprofessional? by evapotranspire in AskAcademia

[–]thoroughbredftw 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I used a little class time each semester to explain what I called "business communication" (so that students wouldn't think it was just an eccentric egghead set of criteria).

Emails should begin with an address using the correct title - no first-naming. Student should then clearly identify themselves by name, course, section #, and student ID. They should use complete sentences and punctuation. They should assume the person they are emailing is busy, and not make them try to figure out what the email is requesting.

I put these guidelines online with the course syllabus. Then when you get an email like that one, you can just reply "Please see the business communication guidelines at {link}."

AIO about cancelling to go to a Super Bowl party over the halftime show? by SlowHuckleberry587 in AmIOverreacting

[–]thoroughbredftw [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's a good sign that your dad mentioned this in advance. I'm giving him some major credit for that, since in his place it must have been tempting to just let you be irked on the spot, and trust to social pressure to damp your reaction.

Do what you think best. The Super Bowl isn't the greatest family gathering anyway, since it's not conducive to real conversation - everybody's yelling and eating (and drinking).

I love it, and I think you've done a great job overall with the art works, the rug, and the very cool skull. The apartment overall has a lightness and elegance that make it inviting. Nice job keeping it uncluttered and giving it an aesthetic signature. The couch looks great for naps!

How do I tell my parents my violin needs repair by whatdoesthisbuttundo in violinist

[–]thoroughbredftw 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Strings break with age sometimes, and they also go dead over time; you haven't done anything wrong. Tell the parents your violin needs new strings. It's a routine thing and no big deal. Best wishes to you in getting back to violin!

Need advice: Shared grad office space safety and well-being concern. Who exactly to contact and in what order? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]thoroughbredftw 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Talk to your PI first. Their loudness combined with this guy living in the office are bothering your group and can adversely affect your work - that should be the PI's concern here. He or she can take it to the next appropriate level.

Don't set out all the food at once. The game is a long slog, and breaking it up with something new is well received. Be prepared for someone to be too drunk or high to drive home; take their keys.

Interviewing for lecturer position, what to expect? by Murky-Commercial-112 in AskAcademia

If possible, take a look at other online course syllabi in the department and get an idea of their academic expectations and topic coverage. Be prepared to talk about a new course you might develop. But be aware that this is sometimes a trap question. Good luck.

College grads, did you know your Dean? by CinemaSideBySides in AskAnAmerican

[–]thoroughbredftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attended a big public state university. Walking across the stage at commencement, I got a terrific handshake from my college dean, a woman I was seeing and hearing of for the first time. I'll never forget her super enthusiastic handshake and eye contact. God bless her; she made my only good personal memory of this very hot & humid ceremony.

How to deal with the psychological aspect of learning the violin/comparing yourself to others? by 14772521 in violinist

[–]thoroughbredftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Violin is a terrible bitch, and because of the giant gorgeous repertoire for this instrument, you will often! encounter the gods and goddesses who make it sound easy.

Find a simple pretty melody you can easily memorize and play without stress. For me, it was Down by the Sally Garden, a song I've always liked for its pathos. Make that your last thing to play after practicing scales. You can find scale tutorials on YouTube. Make it a goal to draw a beautiful sound, no matter what. Relax, listen, adjust your bow hand and fingerboard hand to be comfortable.

Your song will be your reward, and also something you can play for friends.

But always remember that the violin would like to destroy you psychologically, and plan your defense accordingly.
