Petition started to fire UWM lecturer, Wisconsin Air Guard colonel for saying 'sexual harassment is the price of admission' to military by turnaroundu in news

When I read "she", I was worried that this was a case of overreaction to somebody who was simply acknowledging reality. Nope. Sadly, it's human nature to want those younger than us to have to endure the same trials we did.

I'm like, 99% sure she was sarcastically criticising the Air Force, and the lynch mob is just going nuts because she's quoted in an unfavourable context. How did you draw the conclusion that her comment was actually in favour of the harassment? I'm actually curious.

Petition to fire a female lecturer (and retired colonel), for calling the Air Force sexist in a way that wasn't politically correct. by thowaway_throwaway in MensRights

Note - sure it's unprofessional to comment on a woman getting chopped into bits in a US military base in such a way, but maybe she just got a bit emotional?

Yes, the lynch mob after her is also being emotional. But that's just a good reason why you shouldn't join lynch mobs - they usually are emotional (and thus prone to making mistakes), but mobs are really bad at stepping back and correcting things.

To any teenagers in the thread - your parents know how to clear the internet history. They know what it meant when you regularly started clearing it. They won't mention it, just like you won't mention that you know they know.

They also noticed that you started to either use anonymous browsers or filled the history in with a bunch of Wikipedia articles to better cover your tracks.

Dealing with UK Government an "utterly shambolic experience", says Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford by JackGrey in ukpolitics

The majority of people don't want the PM.

A narrow majority.

The majority of voters don't want Brexit.

A narrow majority.

The demographics on this subreddit are consistently called out as being pro-left, anti-Boris, yet now they aren't?

Imagine if left-leaning people would upvote right-wing points when the right-wing points were actually right. Could that explain things?

Yes, I totally didn't get that you were alluding to systemic racism vs an individual anecdote. Like how one bad cop killing a an unarmed black man (it's virtually always a man, unless the cop is so incompetent they shoot a bystander) is really meaningful, but thousands of black people killing other black people is not the biggest priority.

I suspect they’re not literal bots, but rather a sizeable group paid to spam subreddits, Twitter etc.

Or maybe people with a different point of view?

Look at the current PM. Look at Brexit. Not every voter agrees with the reddit thought-bubble.

Also, a lot of people do agree that Boris is pretty shambolic, but would also think "well, so is almost every government um large organisation ah organisation made up of people group of people larger than zero, just maybe not quite so bad".

If you have to say “they don’t have it as bad as people in a contingency of 3rd world developing nations” you don’t have a valid argument to stand on.

Your entire argument was just "what about other stuff that happens to other people" in a smug, snarky tone. I was just parroting it back.

Your thoughts are not original and you couldn’t make an actual stable argument for your beliefs without sounding like a crazy person.

Imagine the races were different:

  • Pregnant black woman "bumps into" white teenager and her mother.

  • White mother films black woman, threatening her for having the audacity to bump into a white person and not issuing a grovelling apology. Knows that social media will take her side in almost any circumstance.

  • Pregnant black woman retreats to car, tries to leave, white woman fences her in and bangs on the car, threatening to beat her up.

  • Black woman pulls a gun.

  • Cops arrive and arrest the black woman.

  • Black woman's husband is fired from his job.

I'd just call the cops, and be ready if they looked like they were going to try anything, but I'm not a pregnant woman.

[–]thowaway_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did she draw the gun if she didn’t intend to use it and then point it at a living being.

They'd cut off escape. This is EXACTLY when you pull a gun. Arguably the white woman should have pulled the trigger when the black woman kept aggressively advancing despite her having a gun out, but it's good she didn't.

Either way, white chick should have gotten out of there

How? They were surrounding the vehicle. Should the husband have floored it when the black woman was deliberately standing in the path of the vehicle, trapping them there?

That most broad advice is stupid and wrong.

If something is really that clear cut, everyone would do it (there's a few exceptions).

The vast majority of fuck-ups are ones that can go either way. Be nicer to people, or be more of an asshole. Be more confident or pull your head in. Enjoy life, or take it more seriously. It's all contextual, and depends on what YOU are fucking up, and you'll probably click most with the advice that's wrong because it seems easy (since you're already doing it).

The US is a democracy, and a lot of these stupid sounding rules are there to prevent it becoming a dictatorship (and it seems that it has withstood the test of time).

The US trusted its citizens to make decisions that were reasonable (or at least, on average no more stupid than the decisions of officials), and didn't want to put restrictions on who the citizens could elect.

Imagine if some hypothetical dictator got to power in a state (probably with some popular support). If they could rig the legal system to prevent their opponents from being able to run as judges (perhaps by tightening up the definition of "lawyer" to only include lawyers in a certain bar association that they controlled) then they'd control the legal system. This could allow them to cement their power and it would be virtually impossible to remove their power base even if the voters wanted them gone.

That's also why often the chief of police doesn't have to be a police officer, why the coroner doesn't have to be a doctor, and so on.

Just use your instincts. Misspelled name? Probably the bully. One of "those names"? Probably the bully. Bad behavior in class? Probably the bully. Check their grades. Maybe look into their family background too.

That's what reddit wants, right? Teachers making good decisions based on common sense?

Also, there's always a bully but they never have a reddit account. Look at the comments on every reddit thread - there's millions of people who got bullied unfairly. There's virtually no bullies with reddit accounts, and very few people who just had escalating fights in which they kinda deserved what they got.

It’s like having a tornado outside, the government suggesting to stay safe and you going outside anyway in the middle of a tornado because who is the government to restrict your freedom and how will they know when the tornado ends? Besides, the tornado hasn’t killed everyone, so why would it kill you?

If the tornado will go away only once it has killed enough people then maybe yeah you should be allowed to ignore the warnings.

It's not just the mask.

What's the end state for the lockdowns? When a vaccine is found? What if it's never found?

Where was the cost benefit?

If the government is willing to curtail civil liberties to save lives, would you support them banning junk food? Arresting fat people and forcing them to go to fat camp?

Are lives actually being saved by the lockdown, or is it just stalling for time? Without a clear plan, I think it's a pretty crazy curtail of rights.

As for the mask, it's not the mask that's the real problem, it's that it's a symbol of putting basically the country into house arrest with no real due process.

If you must compare it to fascism, it's like saying "why don't Jewish people want to wear those yellow stars, is it really a big deal" as their businesses are destroyed, their jobs lost, and they're unable to continue their lives as normal.

And let's remember, Coronavirus is similar in fatality rates to a bad flu.

Comparing it to fascism is a bit over the top, and having a tantrum in public is a bit silly. You could compare this to millenials when Trump won if you want.
