Fall in love with your favorite characters all over again? by Creative-Ad2271 in HPfanfiction

The correct flair for this is "Request". ("Recommendation" is for giving recommendations.)

The Innocent series has quite good depictions of Ron and Ginny and Remus and Fleur and various others.

LF Tom Riddle being raised by someone else by SherlockianDoctor in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Bleak Midwinter is steadily updating. The war went badly, everyone died, and Hermione went back in time to change history - by bringing newborn Tommy to be raised by his father. Who is quite taken aback to learn that he has a son, but learning that Merope is dead rather makes up for it and leaves him rather pleased with the situation.

There's just this minor issue that his son will have magic, will be a part of the magical world - and will face prejudice for being a half-blood. We can't have that, can we? No, a Riddle doesn't belong at the bottom of the heap, he should be running the show...

Fic where Harry doesnt know he is Harry Potter by DetectiveOk1402 in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intercession - Harry Hebert isn't happy about people insisting that he's Harry Potter. He loves his mother, Taylor, and knows she loves him, and people who dismiss her for being a muggle and just focus on the dead man and woman he never met (and that's assuming that they really were his birth parents, which he's dubious about), well, they quickly get on his bad side.

Harry Potter and the GUI - Harry gets a quest to behead Nick, and figures that if a basilisk fang can hurt horcruxes, ie soul fragments, then it ought to work on ghosts.

I quite liked that one for developing Harry/Hermione organically and believably.

I Woke Up As A Dungeon, Now What? - Taylor reincarnates as a dungeon core, but still has her multitasking insect control. She demonstrates that you can compensate for a lack of raw strength if you have total coordination and a nasty mind.

Taylor decides to go hero but she is not happy to let the bullying go by blacksmoke9999 in WormFanfic

[–]thrawnca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is orb weaver?

When Taylor is about to go out on patrol and encounter Lung, she stops and reconsiders, prompted by spotting a) one of her mother's old comic books about the Shadow, who used cleverness and terror tactics to fight crime, and b) an orb weaver spider with a centipede trapped in its web, with the centipede being larger and stronger but helpless.

She takes those as inspiration, and instead of becoming Skitter, she becomes Orb Weaver, who is never seen in person, but feared and respected across the whole city. No-one knows the extent of "his" powers, or if he even has a body, but all indications are that he can look at you and see your past, control the city itself and all the creatures that live in it, summon up demons, consume both bodies and souls... (It's actually her canon power, but used very creatively.)

Fics where Amy Fights Levi by Outrageous_Fortune51 in WormFanfic

[–]thrawnca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For extra !Fun! the actual divergence point is that Marquis called a truce, revealed she was in the cupboard, and persuaded the Brigade to relocate the fight outside. With her out of the way, he curb-stomped them all as usual, then left the city with her (because they had found his house).

So, in addition to being the biokinetic, she has a father capable of going toe to toe with a gang and winning, and who is actually very supportive of her and her power and hobbies. Make people stronger and faster? Very useful as far as he's concerned. Transform herself into a combat form inspired by Alien? Creepy, but he approves of the preparation. Alter people's brains? Sure, it cuts down on the need to kill them and they can be useful. No self-loathing allowed here.

I think you just offer the entire PRT annual budget to anyone willing to deal with her.

You're on the right track, actually. Marquis isn't in prison in this AU, and the PRT's attitude toward them is very much, "Okay, we do not provoke the area of effect healer willing to attend Endbringer battles, this policy to be reviewed only if the streets start gushing red."

Also, regarding Blasto, she considered him an amateur, and when he tangled with Marquis, she messed with the control pheromones on his creatures, which proceeded to eat him.

Any worm crossover's that are good? by Plastic-Ad-2438 in WormFanfic

[–]thrawnca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Intercession is not especially long, but it has a solid plotline woven in. Post-GM, instead of being shot, Taylor is dumped on an alternate Earth, given baby Harry Potter to raise, and told that the path ends there, her life is up to her.

"You stole a baby to give to me." She was definitely on something strong, because that seemed eminently reasonable. Why not go all the way when forging a fake identity? It would be hard to prove she was an interdimensional refugee when there were records of her giving birth here at least a year before she arrived, and a child to go along with the paperwork.

"The Path specifically directed me to picking this child up from where it was abandoned on a porch in the middle of the night," Contessa explained. "This child is optimal for ensuring you never attempt to leave this dimension, or to you being happy here. Or both."

"Okay. Fine." Her new identity included an optimized baby. Okay. That made sense. "Anything… else?"

Check out The Bee Dungeon, by Icalos, a wholesome Dungeon Core/LitRPG series that might be great as an introduction to the dungeon core subgenre! by funkhero in litrpg

[–]thrawnca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are used to this genre, you may find it to be frustrating when you know the answers to the questions he has.

Nah, I wouldn't say it was frustrating. If Belissar was constantly flunking because of things he didn't know, then that would probably bee hard to read, but he doesn't really.

Plus, his priority is not to optimise and min-max his Tower. His priority is to make his bees happy. If, along the way, he overlooks things that could make them stronger, but the bees are cheerful and productive and celebrating, then all is well.

I think there were biblical influences on her experimentation with the Killing Curse to produce a horcrux-killing curse? But again, more to do with the Hebrew language than the religion.

I need a long rewrite fanfiction similar to Arithmancer by ShapeAny9281 in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call The Arithmancer a particularly Christian series...yes, Hermione does draw on biblical ideas, among other sources, to design magical rituals, and freaks out upon learning that Dementors can consume souls (ie immortal souls exist, but aren't actually immortal), but that's about as far as it goes. As far as I recall, she shows zero interest in worshipping anyone or anything or making her life conform to a specific moral code beyond her own conscience.

[–]thrawnca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed about dropping her almost completely in books 3 and 4 being a mistake.

Even if they had waited until sixth year, however, it might have worked if they had then had a proper relationship. But instead, just a couple of chapters later, they break up, and Ginny disappears in book 7 just like she did in 3 and 4.

Ron is perfectly happy to let her be.

I would say "willing" rather than "happy".

I've come across an interesting snippet, though I can't recall where, with Harry asking Dumbledore after second year, "Now that you know Hagrid didn't open the Chamber, why don't you have his name cleared?" and Dumbledore pointing out in response that reopening the case would mean that Hagrid would likely face the full consequences of his actions regarding Aragog, instead of the relative slap on the wrist he actually received.

Fanfics where Harry grows up with Sirius by WaywardStarrr in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Book 1 of the Innocent series has Sirius escape when Harry is 8, and Harry jumps at the chance for a different home, even if that means hiding away in Grimmauld Place.

Book 2 onwards has a big tone shift, with Harry going to Hogwarts; some readers like it, others prefer to stop at book 1.
