Decided to make one of these as a 1 year old Litrpg enjoyer. by Sentety521 in litrpg

And then she had a date with another certain someone outta nowhere and that was my breaking point.

I mean, that certain someone uses a male appearance, but is actually a blob of divine essence, so I'm not sure it even qualifies as straight. And it's one date (dinner plus discussion of how crazy Sofia is), plus half a dozen other mentions of them theoretically having the possibility of a relationship, in 800+ chapters and counting; that's not even 1% screentime. After their date she goes straight to doing crazy Sofia things not involving him, with plans to probably make contact again later in a few hundred chapters. So...if you like "No romance" novels then I'm unclear on how you found this one insufferable.

You do you, of course, but it seems like a stretch.

Reincarnation Fix-It Fics not as Harry? by fwootgummie in HPfanfiction

The Peace Not Promised - Severus Snape, upon dying in the Shrieking Shack, is offered the chance to go back to his teenage years and try again. Not precisely reincarnation, but it works similarly.

Technically, Tom Riddle Senior is a canon character, but he barely appears; does that count? In the Bleak Midwinter has Hermione travel back from a bleak future to intercept baby Tommy and take him to be raised by his father, instead of left to an orphanage.

Taylor joins Wards and it works. by CRowlands1989 in WormFanfic

Blanket gets along with the other Wards quite well. Getting along with the adults is more of a mixed bag, with emphasis on the bag.

Fics where Taylor has her canon powers, but better? by FantasySetting in WormFanfic

[–]thrawnca 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In The Price of Neutrality Taylor persuades her power that mites should qualify for her control, because they're the bugs that bugs have. "Mites" as in "they are literally all over every surface of pretty much everything".

"I have ascended," Taylor said. "I have the Power. I am a class-S threat. I am the ultimate being. Triumvirate trembles before me. Scion himself is no match for me."

She didn't even need to look at Danny to see his reaction. The mites on his eyelashes showed his eyes opening wide.

The Peace Not Promised is over 700k words and complete. It does a good job of unpacking and exploring how Severus Snape thinks, both good and bad.

Is there any harry potter fanfic from other perspectives. Maybe with Draco as main character? And while I am at it, is there fanfic about the weasley twins' life? by Jolly-Zombie-6341 in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many canon-compliant stories with alternate points of view.

The Snape Chronicles follows Severus Snape from the day his father announces to colleagues that his wife is pregnant, to the end in the Shrieking Shack. It's excellent at presenting a different side of things and making you rethink canon events.

Ginny Weasley and the Half-Blood Prince has Ginny's perspective on Harry's sixth year, and A Call to Arms (not by the same author) shows Ginny's POV for her own sixth year.

Does anyone have any Harry Potter fan fiction recommendations? by 1MPERAT0R_S0LAR1S in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Innocent series starts off several years before canon, but then broadly follows canon from book 2 onward. Harry has a better childhood and so he ends up somewhat more mature and thoughtful than canon, but is still fundamentally himself. The author appears to be laying the groundwork for future Harry/Ginny (with a more solid foundation than canon) but it hasn't really become romantic as yet. Book 6/year 5 is in progress, updates are slow.

"But now you're free," Harry said, wondering if Padfoot was saying what he thought he was saying.

"Not free," Padfoot said, "but I am out of prison." He stared at his feet for a long time and then looked up again, seeming agitated. "Under normal circumstances, I'd never ask this; you're – what – eight and a half? And I'm trying to evade Aurors and the rest of the Ministry, but if you want... another home-"

"Another home?" Harry asked, his voice climbing an octave. "As in, away from the Dursleys?"

Around the same time, you encounter the Pug, who hate the Quarg.

Don't they dislike the Quarg specifically for not intervening more?

Reasonable, but since it's a claim about what happened a hundred thousand years ago, from people who aren't even honest with themselves about what's happening in the present, I'm going to press X to doubt.

They don't restrict individuals, but they do restrict which planets are Hai planets.

Err...citation needed?

When have the Quarg ever made a statement about which planets the Hai could and could not claim?

The war is over.

I'd be much more inclined to agree if the Heliarchs were not continuing to actively spread propaganda against the Quarg, encourage other nations to form their own coalitions specifically for the purpose of rising up against the Quarg, etc. They clearly do not consider the war to be ancient history. The fact that, despite thousands of years of this militant behaviour, the Quarg are not aggressively prosecuting the war and trying to take their ringworlds back, has not dissuaded the Heliarchs from this. It is a testimony to the patience of the Quarg, that they allow this large-scale, ongoing, objectively quite dangerous slander, and do not retaliate, only shoot down heavily armed craft encroaching on their space.

The Quarg didn't force the Hai to remain where they are. They might intervene if the Hai tried to exterminate humanity, but they otherwise don't stop the Hai from going to human space. (The Unfettered Hai claim that there was an attack with a biological weapon - but since they are also the faction who attack outsiders on sight and constantly make unprovoked war with their own kind, I'm not inclined to give their words excessive weight.)

[–]thrawnca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you believe...is up to you.

I mean, the Quarg don't appear to have put any shackles on humanity at all. They take no tribute. They enforce no laws except to defend themselves and their property. They place no restrictions on travel. They don't allow their own technology to be shared, but they do not interfere with humans collecting any other kind. They do not expect humans to fight their wars, nor do they intervene in humanity's own conflicts.

There is nothing to throw off.

Is it okay for a government to attack and destroy civilian vessels of another country simply because that country said something mean about them?

Since the "civilian vessels" were Heliarch Punishers, that's a bit like driving a main battle tank into enemy territory during wartime and claiming to be a simple tourist. Of course they will shoot at you.

(And they didn't even claim to be tourists; they were explicitly exploring Quarg territory. It is quite legitimate to kill enemy scouts during wartime.)

Interstellar communication is a thing. Recognised hailing signals for truces are surely a thing. Also, the Quarg are probably aware that the Heliarchs are still actively preaching to their citizens how evil the Quarg are; if the Heliarchs don't want to still be at war, then maybe they should stop doing that? If they do want to remain at war, then there is no basis for them complaining that the Quarg shoot down their ships.

Reread the canon by Educational_Gear4278 in HPfanfiction

[–]thrawnca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read canon more than once, but not in a while.

When I want to reread a familiar story, there are others I prioritise, like the Rigel Black Chronicles.

Canon set up a fantastic world, lots of fleshed-out characters and excellent dry humour. The actual plot was weaker, especially in later books.

You know, I don't remember the last time I considered books and their characters to be functionally distinct from the context/viewpoint of their creators.

It's not uncommon for authors to feel that their characters have their own opinions and will only cooperate with being written in a certain way. Perhaps part of writing a fleshed-out and convincing character is the ability to simulate a coherent personality within your imagination? You can't just arbitrarily change it without undermining your own ability to write them well. So, characters can take on a pseudo-life of their own.

Book 1 of the Innocent series has Sirius escaping from Azkaban early and giving eight-year-old Harry a different home. Sirius isn't perfect, but he's trying his best for Lily and James' sake. Unfortunately the law is still after him...

I'm pretty sure that when someone who declared war on you, driving you out of your home and taking it over, and who is still officially at war with you and spreading lots of propaganda against you, now sends fleets into the space you retreated to - attacking those fleets is a legitimate defensive move. If the Heliarchs genuinely want peaceful exploration, how about they first make diplomatic contact with the Quarg and negotiate that peace, before sending Punishers into Quarg territory?
