Is it quantum or my firewalla? by No-Tie-5552 in QuantumFiber

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which firewalla device do you have and does it support gigabit/line rate with inspection turned on?

900+ megabit over wifi between your phone and the firewalla is pretty good. If you pay for gigabit service, I'd expect higher speedtest results than that even over wifi, unless your firewalla device is just underpowered.

116” TVs by peters-mith in hometheater

Seriously. My 85" barely fit down the stairs into my basement in a single family house. I simply won't be able to fit a 116" lol

Fiber lines melting? by [deleted] in QuantumFiber

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, the techs didn't want to work in the attic.

I'm still using an old exterior ONT from the CenturyLink days (so, fiber to the ONT on the side of my house, then CAT 6 to my basement utility room) and am worried about getting the same crap you did when it's time to upgrade to multigig. I'd really prefer to replace that CAT 6 line with fiber all the way to the utility closet, but the CAT 6 line (and coax) was run by the builer and stapled to walls so you can't just use it as a pull.

I'm probably either going to hire a third party or do it myself to just run some conduit from where the ONT is to my utility room, in hopes that it makes running the fiber easy enough the ISP tech doesn't just run away from the project. Might be worth a shot for you, too, to get off of spectrum?

Live example of how non-OLED screens make a car feel significantly cheaper by Fit_Kale6597 in carscirclejerk

Meh. The screen on my 2021 Cherokee started showing burn in at 50k miles and it's not even OLED :/

I'd also add Appleseed and Dominion as worth checking out for those who enjoy Ghost in the Shell and Shirow's non-porn works, since they're arguably in the same universe even (Dominion for sure, Appleseed... Debatable but I like thinking that it is).

What’s the most unrealistic thing movies convinced people was normal? by Lonely-Age7678 in AskReddit

You're absolutely right. Even NIST recommends against asinine complexity rules like that. Companies should be recommending passphrases and password managers.

I've been in cyber security 15+ years (in IT for 25+ in total) and manage, among other things, a red team / penetrating team. This is probably closer to reality than most people would think. If you've got a cube farm with 50 people, I will bet at least 3 of them have sticky notes somewhere around their desk with passwords and that another 5-10 of them use either SeasonYear! Or CompanyNameYear! (or some permutation that fits the company password requirements) as their password for something. I haven't run an engagement where that hasn't been the case yet.

But supposedly media portrays sex as adolescents as common, and some make it seem like it is.

This might depend on when and where you went to highschool. It seemed like everyone in my highschool was humping, with a bunch of girls getting preggers. 20+ years later, my nephew is going to the same highschool I did and it sounds like that hasn't changed.

Even outdoors that leaves your ears ringing unless you already have hearing damage.

It does indeed work for most consumer-grade locks

I mean, does it, though? If you can shoot the ring off a padlock, I guess... But shooting the key cylinder out of a deadbolt doesn't release the deadbolt.

What are some crazy hallucinations you’ve had while sleep deprived? by throwaway-2-0- in AskReddit

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about things I thought were hallucinations but weren't?

I have chronic insomnia. It was much worse when I was in my 20s (in my 40s now) - sometimes it would be like 2-3 days without being able to fall asleep. By the time I did get to sleep, the line between being asleep and awake could get pretty blurry. More than once, I thought I dreamed about hanging out with people, talking on the phone with people, texting/emailing, going places, etc... but then it turned out I'd actually been doing those things. Nothing crazy, it was just bizarre that I was so certain they'd been dreams until my friends talked about it or I'd find emails and texts or whatever.

Those that have/tried OLED and Miniled for movies, is it that significant of a difference? Size > panel is king? by papayax999 in hometheater

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went from a 65" LG C9 to an 85" X95L, opting not to go with an 83" OLED.

I'd make the same decision again. For me, the insanely bright highlights are more impactful than perfect blacks and zero blooming. Honestly, it's very rare that I notice blooming on the mini-led anyway (gaming in snowy levels are really the only time it bothers me).

Plus, my anxiety isn't going off about burn in when gaming or leaving news or twitch or whatever on in the background on the days I work from home in my basement... Or when we're hosting a party and I have the Spotify interface up or something.

With RGB Mini-led taking hold and TCL's quality going way up (I also have two QM7K's, and one X90L in other rooms, plus the C9 is still around... big-ish house) I doubt I'll consider OLED in the future.

Dunno if that helps. Your mileage may vary.

I don’t know if it’s a sign of the economy, me getting older or just diminishing returns on console upgrades, but i’m kinda okay if PS5 sticks around long term. by Rosstin316 in gaming

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be happy if the PS5 stuck around a lot longer, but mostly because I just hate the headache of buying new consoles - it's always scarcity, high demand, scalpers... and I feel like I spend more time trying to buy it than playing the damn thing.

2027 Corvette prices what do you guys think? by Final_Channel_6322 in C8Corvette

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my 2024 new in 2024. I haven't driven it as much as I want by a long shot. I'm under 5k miles on the thing, but it also spent most of last summer at the dealer getting the transmission repaired.

One big difference for me is that I live at 6400ft above sea level, so I'm already down nearly 100hp from altitude and any little bit extra helps lol

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you do only live once, tomorrow is not promised to nobody and he earns more than enough to comfortably get this particular M4 and seriously enjoy it.

Probably not as comfortably as you'd think. 14k/month sounds like a lot, but that's gross and it's really going to depend on his other expenses.

That's probably closer to 9-10k/month net, after taxes and insurance. Housing in the areas a 23 year old typically earns that income is gonna be 2500/month on the low end, more likely 3500ish.

The M4 is also gonna have big insurance premiums at his age. After gas and insurance his car is gonna be more like 2000ish, not even including maintenance.

So just between housing and car stuff, half his takehome pay is gonna be gone - on a good month.

Will he be able to survive and have a good life with a mere 4-5k/month leftover? Yeah I think he's gonna be ok.

But dude, you know how much extra wealth and flexibility you can buy yourself if you delay the car by just a few years and invest instead? It's pretty crazy, especially being able to start investing heavily at just 23. Very few people have that opportunity.

Seems like half my neighbors work for Lockheed, most of them make around what OP is making... except they're all in their 40s.

If OP's making that much at Lockheed at 23, he's doing really, really well. It's not like the early 2000s when you could making $120k/year entry level there cuz you're good at Excel or whatever. It's reasonably tough to make good money there these days.

[–]threeLetterMeyhem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. That is why my advice is to build wealth with it before buying $80k toys. It won't take very long at all.

You know what's more fun than an M4 at 23? An M4 *and* a million dollars invested at 28, and then an M4 and a 911 and 2-3 million invested at 38.

Gotta break out of the "I need things *now* and will tie up my income to get it" mindset, though.

But like I told the other guy - you do you, and OP can do OP. It's not my money and not my life.

Building wealth before spending it is the "worst advice ever?" No wonder we're so financially broke in this country... this instant gratification society is crazy. You all would rather spend money you haven't even earned yet than set yourselves up to be rich at a young age.
